Podcasts?

Has anyone else developed a fixation on podcasting? As I've been much busier the last year or two (or three?), I've found a bit less time for movies--don't worry, I still watch an unhealthy dose more than the average person--but I find myself constantly drawn to podcasts as I multitask working, reading, writing, etc.

Some of my favorites include Comedy Bang Bang, The Cracked Podcast, Improv4Humans, The Pod F Tompcast, With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus, WTF with Marc Maron, Never Not Funny, and The Worst Idea In The World.

Starting to get into SuperEgo, Thrilling Adventure Hour, The Nerdist, and several others.

Thoughts? Opinions? Snappy quips?

Never listen to em, as I doubt I'd be able to do anything besides listen.

Absolutely everyone is talking about Serial, though.

I vaguely know about Serial. Is that like a BBC Radio series or a weekly?

I have a lot of time at my job where I can do my work with headphones, so I've been into podcasting for about a year and a half, two years. It started with Discovery's Stuff podcasts (Stuff You Should Know, Stuff You Missed in History Class, and Popstuff when it was on). Now I listen to Maximumfun.org stuff as well as RobHasAPodcast stuff and other things as well. Here's a complete list from my phone:

RobHasAPodcast: Rob Cesternino from Survivor Amazon/All Stars podcasts about Survivor, Amazing Race, Big Brother, etc.

Post Show Recaps: Rob's scripted shows recaps. Does shows like Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Lost Rewatch, etc.

Bullseye with Jesse Thorn: A culture podcast sometimes pop culture and sometimes older culture (he had Richard Linklater talking about Boyhood this week as well as a couple of guys that wrote a book about Richard Pryor).

Jordan Jesse Go: A comedy podcast about pretty much nothing, but it makes me laugh.

My Brother, My Brother, and Me: Three McElroy brothers answer Yahoo questions comedically. Very funny.

Sawbones: Justin McElroy and his wife (a doctor) take a comedic and informative look at a medical topic, it's history, and how we've treated it in the past.

How Did This Get Made?: Paul Scheer, his wife, and Rafi from The League watch bad movies and comment about them.

Judge John Hodgman: John Hodgman (PC Guy vs. Justin Long's Mac in the commercials) takes on disagreements and judges who's wrong/right.

Stuff You Missed in History Class: Thirty to forty-five minute history segments on subjects they research.

Stuff You Should Know: Thirty to forty-five minute segments on various topics they research. Last three: Scientific Method, Online Gambling, Jim Henson.

Freakonomics Radio: The guys from the books take on other subjects. Last week "Why doesn't everyone get the flu vaccine?"

CAGcast: Cheapassgamer.com's take on video game news and new releases. Funny stuff.

Art of Wrestling: I skip through until I see a guy that was a wrestler when I was a kid.

Memory Palace: Five to ten minute segments on various history topics.

I guess those are the main ones.

Yeah, Serial even got a few articles about it here in France. I used to collaborate to a French podcast about Korea a few years back, in which I talked about korean cinema, but it stopped.
I don't listen to podcasts, even though some might really interest me, mainly because of time issues. And english-speaking podcasts are exhausting to my ear, I need to be fully focused on it to get it all understood, so I can't do anything else while listening to it.

I haven't listened to Serial (and, after the tepid response to its finale, I might not ever)... but that series definitely appears to be the first Podcast to significantly crossover into the mainstream (with the exception of WTF which seems to be somewhat acknowledged by the masses).

Serial is the gateway podcast for getting into the medium in general.

I'll second the recc for The Monday Morning Podcast, Burr is a very fucking funny guy. He's not even telling jokes per se, just his personality cracks me up.

I also listen to Your Mom's House Podcast, which is the weekly podcast for Tom Segura and his wife, Christina Pazitsky. Tom's one of my favorite stand ups right now, and I love these guys. They're incredibly crude, hell they spend whole segments on farts and diarrhea, but it's fantastic.

I dip into WTF whenever they have a guest I'm interested in, like Anna Kendrick or Dax Shephard. Same with Joe Rogan's

All 12 episodes of Serial are on YouTube. I'm currently listening to the first episode.

I finished Serial just now (11 episodes listened to yesterday and one this morning). It's basically a radio version of The Staircase, a 2004 miniseries on a murder case in North Carolina. This one is probably more thorough though (and unlike The Staircase, the case is never solved). And though the practice has been criticized, the live reporting I feel benefits the series and allows it to stand apart from say, an episode of 48 Hours or Dateline (of which it could have ended up being in the wrong hands).

And one last thing...

I'm now binge-listening to This American Life (which is technically not a podcast but it does stream episodes). So far, there's 544 episodes (a new one will run on Friday) and I'm at 22 episodes (plus a transcript of the retracted episode) right now. I now realize the brilliance of David Sedaris.

I listened to a recent episode centered around the internet and cyber-harassment. I actually thought that first segment (where a female columnist confronts a troll) was a bit of a snooze... but the third segment (about a webcam set up to watch a birds' nest and the ensuing internet phenomenon that grew around it) was extremely interesting.
