The Big 12: 1996-2010?

Post by Buscemi »

With the announcement that Colorado would be leaving for the Pac 10 and the rumors that Nebraska and Missouri will be going to the Big Ten (which would make it thirteen teams if it happens), it's looking like that the Big 12 (created in 1996 as a merger of the Big 8 and the remaining Southwestern Conference) will collapse after fourteen years. Sudden or in the works, it does not seem that surprising. The Big 12's power had been becoming too favorable to the Southern teams in the past few years which had led to uproar from former Big 8 members (the conference was initially based in the Midwest). Something was bound to happen.

So far, the rumors are that the Pac 10 and the Big Ten are attempting expansions to 16 teams each. If these moves fall into place, the Pac 10 will be eleven (already confirmed) and the Big Ten will be at thirteen.

So while I was sleeping last night, I found out that only Nebraska got accepted into the Big Ten. Meanwhile Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Texas A&M are planning to join Colorado to create a Pac 16 superconference. If all this happens, it will leave Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Baylor as the remaining Big 12 teams. And since a major conference cannot operate with only five teams, I imagine that four of those teams will eventually go to the Big Ten (partly since the Big Ten will not be able to get the Big East teams that they wanted, such as Notre Dame and Syracuse). The odd man out (most likely Baylor) will probably end up at a mid-major.

Also, I'm reading that Texas may go to the Big Ten. Does that make any sense? You saw how Southern expansion and dominace killed the Big 12 so why would another dominant Midwestern conference want to do the same?

Notre Dame is independant. I don't see the Big Ten going to 16 teams. It could happen, but I don't see it. All they wanted to do was have an even number of teams so they can actually have a conference championship game. But hell, who knows what will happen. This is nuts.

Notre Dame is only independent in football. They are affliated with the Big East in all other sports.

Here is why I think the Big Ten will go to sixteen teams: the geography. With Nebraska joining (most likely), it fucks up the geography. After Nebraska, the closest team is Iowa. And after that, the cluster of Illinois, Indiana, Purdue and Ohio State. Nebraska would be traveling rather far for road games (and be the only one having to suffer through a tough road schedule). Adding Kansas, Missouri, Iowa State and Kansas State makes sense so that it helps with the geography. Other benefits include getting the St. Louis and Kansas City markets, making the Missouri-Illinois rivalry more than a "Bragging Rights" game, creating a yearly rivalry for Iowa and Iowa State and getting the Kansas basketball program. You would finally have the two traditionally Midwest conferences (the Big Ten and the old Big 8) together at last.

No one cares about Notre Dame in any sport other than football, not even their own fans.

Well, the Big 12 is now the Big 10 as Nebraska has officially joined the Big Ten (now the Big Twelve).

Latest rumors:
-Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Texas A&M may join the Pac 10
-Texas, Oklahoma and Texas A&M may join the SEC
-Kansas and Missouri may join the Mountain West
-Kansas is being an asshole by thinking it can create a new Big 12 with lesser schools they can dominate

Latest reports: the Big 12 may survive after all. Right now, only Oklahoma and Texas seem to be still interested in leaving and possible candidates have been rumored to enter the Big 12 if Oklahoma and Texas stay (such as Arkansas and TCU). Another school I could see considering the Big 12 is Memphis (they have been rumored to be entertaining offers from a major conference for some time now).

And Texas is nearing a move to the Pac 10, which would leave the Big 12 at nine teams. Nothing on Oklahoma yet.

The local sports-talk radio station that I listen to on the drive to work seemed pretty sure that Texas is, in fact, staying put.

ESPN.com claimed that the deal was almost complete.

Edit: Shryke is right. Texas will stay due to a new TV deal that will get them as much as $25 million a year. However, the details of the deal seem rather one-sided to me. Texas, Oklahoma and Texas A&M will get $20 to $25 million a year but the other teams will only get $14 to $17 million a year. It especially doesn't make sense in that an also-ran like Texas A&M will get more money per year than a recent contender such as Missouri or Texas Tech.
