I can't say it hasn't been great to be a sports fan in the New England area over since the turn of the century, though I can only claim 3 of the teams (never was a Pats fan, never jumped on the bandwagon when they got good). And it's crazy how close they came to 4 more championships, losing the NBA finals (that they win if Perkins doesn't get hurt), last year's Stanley Cup finals (a winnable series that was one of the closest in terms of talent level between teams in any sport I've ever seen, puck just bounced Chicago's way) and two additional Super Bowls (that both cold have been won if a crazy catch in each game didn't happen). Only city to have a championship in each of the 4 major sports within a ten year period. Though its not as if our city hasn't had it's share of droughts (86 years in baseball, 39 years in hockey, 41 years in football and 22 years in basketball). I'm just lucky to live in this era.

If Choo is worth almost $20 mil a year, the Cards are saving $40 mil a year until Carpenter is able for free agency.

Anyone Fantasy Baseball savvy? I have 3 min-6 max keepers and can keep them for up to 3 years (don't HAVE to keep them three years). So, future production does count some. Players available for me are:

Hitters
Bryce Harper
David Wright (kept one year already)
Jose Reyes (kept one year already)
Matt Holiday (kept one year already)
David Ortiz
Brandon Phillips
Michael Cuddyer

Pitchers
Adam Wainwright
Madison Bumgarner
Craig Kimbrell
Aroldis Chapman
Jordan Zimmerman
Casey Janssen

Harper, Wright, and Wainwright are the obvious ones and I'm sure I want to keep three more, but which three? I'm thinking Bumgarner, Kimbrell, and Chapman. 12 team league.

Kimbrel led the National League in saves the past two years so if saves net you points, I'd urge you to take him.

I'm usually one who agrees that you shouldn't pay for saves, but you probably have the two safest closers in baseball over the next tree years there, so I'd go with them and Bumgarner is obvious to me as well. He's a stud.

The season so far has been crazy. For many of these teams, you don't know which one will show up. For example, Atlanta loses seven in a row early in the season but manages to have a two game lead in the NL East. Then, the Red Sox lose ten in a row and follow it up with a six game win streak. And in a minor case, the Royals get swept by an awful Astros team but proceed to beat the AL East-leading Blue Jays twice in Toronto (you think that a team that managed to win the season series against a high-powered offense like that and features some good pitchers would be better than 26-29).

And it feels as if the Giants dominate in even-numbered years but falter in odd numbered years. They finished first in the NL West and won the World Series in both 2010 and 2012 while falling to second in 2011 and fourth in 2013. They are in first and have the best record in the National League right now so could the trend continue?

Because I'm always coming up with "what if" concepts, I decided to come up with an idea. What if the worst teams in every season of two-league play had a tournament to see which team was the worst ever? So, I gathered the worst teams in all 113 seasons of completed play and started a March Madness-style bracket with all of them. The results will be simulated through WhatIf? Sports.

In seven cases (four through a one-game playoff, three through head-to-head), tiebreakers were needed.

1903: Senators vs. Cardinals (Cardinals won game 4-1, so Senators enter tournament)
1927: Red Sox vs. Phillies (Red Sox won game 6-3 in 10 innings, so Phillies enter tournament)
1930: Red Sox vs. Phillies (Phillies won game 13-4, so Red Sox enter tournament)
1995: Blue Jays vs. Twins (Blue Jays won head-to-head, so Twins enter tournament)
2000: Phillies vs. Cubs (Cubs won head-to-head, so Phillies enter tournament)
2001: Devil Rays vs. Pirates (Pirates won game 8-5, so Devil Rays enter tournament)
2002: Devil Rays vs. Tigers (Devil Rays won head-to-head 4-2, so Tigers enter tournament)

As you can see, the losing teams advance. This is a worst-of tournament, not best-of.

We're the Worst: 1975 Tigers

I was surprised by the outcome. I expected either the 1962 Mets or the 1916 Athletics to win out. Then I saw that the 1975 Tigers had Dan Meyer on its roster (from looking at his stats and penchant for making teams worse, he was perhaps the 1970's version of Jeff Francoeur).

With all but one game today final (I hope the Giants sweep the Tigers), here is how things look.

AL East: Baltimore (9.5 games ahead of Yankees)
AL Central: Kansas City (2.5 games ahead of Detroit)
AL West: Angels (7 games ahead of Oakland)
NL West: Washington (7 games ahead of Atlanta)
NL Central: St. Louis (4.5 games ahead of Pittsburgh)
NL West: Dodgers (2.5 games ahead of San Francisco)
AL Wild Card: Oakland/Seattle (1 game ahead of Detroit)
NL Wild Card: San Francisco/Pittsburgh (.5 game ahead of Atlanta/Milwaukee)

Still in the hunt:
AL: Cleveland (3.5 games back), Yankees (4.5 games back), Toronto (5 games back)
NL: Atlanta (.5 games back), Milwaukee (.5 games back)

Fading:
AL: Tampa Bay (10 games back), White Sox (15 games back), Boston (15.5 games back), Houston (15.5 games back)
NL: Miami (4.5 games back), Mets (6.5 games back), Cincinnati (7.5 games back), Philadelphia (8 games back), San Diego (8 games back), Cubs (10.5 games back)

Out (only Texas has been officially eliminated but the other three listed teams are only 1-2 losses away from officially joining):
AL: Minnesota, Texas
NL: Arizona, Colorado

Meanwhile, here are the managers that I expect to be fired at the end of the season.
Ron Gardenhire (Minnesota) - I know the Twins like to keep managers for a long time but they really need a new leader to get people to come to Target Field
Kirk Gibson (Arizona) - the GM's already been fired so it's only a matter of time before the manager is too
Robin Ventura (White Sox) - the team hasn't improved since his first season on the job
Walt Weiss (Colorado) - the team's regressed heavily since their hot 2013 start
Ron Roenicke (Milwaukee) - but only if they miss the playoffs
Terry Collins (Mets) - how does this guy keep getting to manage teams? All of his teams underachieve under him.
Bud Black (San Diego) - the team needs a fresh leader to clear the past few years of mediocrity

How everything looks now.

AL East: Baltimore (magic number: 1)
AL Central: Detroit (magic number: 12, 1.5 games ahead of Kansas City)
AL West: Angels (clinched, magic number for home field: 3)
AL Wild Card: Oakland/Kansas City (2 games ahead of Seattle)
NL East: Washington (magic number: 2)
NL Central: St. Louis (magic number: 10, 3.5 games ahead of Pittsburgh)
NL West: Dodgers (magic number: 9, 4 games ahead of San Francisco)
NL Wild Card: San Francisco/Pittsburgh (1.5 games ahead of Milwaukee)

Still in the hunt:
AL: Seattle (2 games back), Toronto (5 games back)
NL: Milwaukee (1.5 games back), Atlanta (4.5 games back)
Fading:
AL: Yankees (6 games back), Cleveland (6 games back), Tampa Bay (10 games back)
NL: Miami (6 games back), Mets (8 games back)
Out:
AL: White Sox, Houston, Boston, Minnesota, Texas
NL: Cincinnati, San Diego, Philadelphia, Cubs, Arizona, Colorado (the first three haven't been mathematically eliminated but Pittsburgh needs just three wins to take them out)

AL East: Baltimore (clinched)
AL Central: Detroit (.5 game ahead of Kansas City, magic number: 11)
AL West: Angels (clinched, I thought they had clinched it last time but that was only a playoff spot)
AL Wild Cards: Kansas City/Oakland (1 game ahead of Seattle, magic numbers: 10/10)
NL East: Washington (clinched)
NL Central: St. Louis (2.5 games ahead of Pittsburgh, magic number: 8)
NL West: Dodgers (2.5 games ahead of San Francisco, magic number: 8)
NL Wild Card: San Francisco/Pittsburgh (3.5 games ahead of Milwaukee, magic numbers: 5/7)

Still in the hunt:
AL: Seattle (1 game back), Cleveland (4 games back)
NL: Milwaukee (3 games back)

Fading:
AL: Yankees (5 games back), Toronto (6 games back)
NL: Atlanta (6 games back), Miami (8 games back)

Out:
AL: Tampa Bay, Houston, White Sox, Boston, Minnesota, Texas
NL: Mets, San Diego, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Cubs, Arizona, Colorado

Meanwhile, the most important late season games.
Detroit @ Kansas City (9/19-21, this series could decide the AL Central)
Milwaukee @ Pittsburgh (9/19-21, Pittsburgh could knock Milwaukee out or Milwaukee could help the Cardinals get closer to the division win)
Kansas City @ Cleveland (9/22-24, Kansas City could knock Cleveland out)
San Francisco @ Dodgers (9/22-24, this series could decide the NL West)
Angels @ Oakland (9/22-24, the Angels could further Oakland's freefall)
Angels @ Seattle (9/25-27, the Angels could help Oakland or Seattle could get their way in the playoffs)
