The MLB Thread

Post by W »

I started this thread to let you know that there's a "30 for 30" documentary on ESPN tonight called "Silly Little Game" chronicling the beginnings and explosion of rotisserie fantasy baseball (8:00, 11:00, 2:00 AM EST). For anyone who doesn't know, we pretty much owe these guys for creating the template for our ultimate leagues. Who knows, we may not be on this site if it wasn't for these people.

Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with the standings so far in the NL Central. The Cardinals have won every game one in all the series they've played so far, making it relatively easy to win every series so far. I'm happy that Brad Penny is closer to his old self than his OLD self. I'm slightly concerned with run production besides our home runs. With Carpenter, Wainright, and Penny pitching like they are, I don't see how any team catches the Cards.

Unless they get into more 20 inning games in which they can't score.

Anyone see the blown call? Both the pitcher and the umpire feel awful. Here it is at about the 3:30 mark (it's the whole last inning) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTR8_RS9epc

I'm calling it: Cincinnati collapses after the break and finishes under .500. They are really overachieving right now.

Also I notice that the Toronto Blue Jays are having some of the year's worst attendance (surprising since the team is halfway decent). I thought it was funny when they had a weekend series moved to Philadelphia due to the G-20 and the Philadelphia games ended up selling out. So basically, they played a game as a home team in front of a crowd that was wanted the other team to win.

I really hope Cincy collapses... It'll make it much easier for the Cards to make the playoffs and when you have two pitchers like Carp and Wainwright in the playoffs, anything is possible.

You know about the 1994 strike that caused the World Series to be canceled? Well, I've decided to do a simulation of what if the World Series had been played that year. Using the teams that had led the division on August 12th, 1994 along with most of the home-field rules of the playoffs then (I didn't know all of them), here is what I found out.

AL Division Series

Cleveland Indians (Wild Card)
New York (AL East)

Game 1 (at Cleveland): Cleveland 5, New York 1 (W- Dennis Martinez, L- Jimmy Key)
Game 2 (at Cleveland): New York 8, Cleveland 3 (W- Jim Abbott, L- Charles Nagy)
Game 3 (at New York): New York 3, Cleveland 1 (W- Melido Perez, L- Jack Morris)
Game 4 (at New York): New York 12, Cleveland 4 (W- Jimmy Key, L- Dennis Martinez)

Texas Rangers (AL West)
Chicago White Sox (AL East)

Game 1 (at Texas): Texas 13, Chicago 4 (W- Kevin Brown, L- Jack McDowell)
Game 2 (at Texas): Chicago 7, Texas 2 (W- Wilson Alvarez, L- Kenny Rogers)
Game 3 (at Chicago): Texas 9, Chicago 3 (W- Bruce Hurst- starter John Dettmer, L- Jason Bere)
Game 4 (at Chicago): Texas 2, Chicago 0 (W- Hector Fajardo, L- Alex Fernandez)

NL Division Series

Los Angeles Dodgers (NL West)
Montreal Expos (NL East)

Game 1 (at Los Angeles): Montreal 8, Los Angeles 5 (12) (W-Jeff Shaw- starter Ken Hill, L- Roger McDowell- starter Ramon Martinez)
Game 2 (at Los Angeles): Los Angeles 4, Montreal 3 (W- Pedro Astacio, L- Pedro Martinez)
Game 3 (at Montreal): Montreal 8, Los Angeles 7 (W- Jeff Shaw- starter Jeff Fassero, L- Jim Gott- starter Kevin Gross)
Game 4 (at Montreal): Montreal 8, Los Angeles 5 (W- Gil Heredia- starter Kirk Rueter, L- Orel Hershiser)

Atlanta Braves (Wild Card)
Cincinnati Reds (NL Central)

Game 1 (at Atlanta): Atlanta 10, Cincinnati 1 (W- Tom Glavine, L- Jose Rijo)
Game 2 (at Atlanta): Atlanta 8, Cincinnati 0 (W- Greg Maddux, L- John Smiley)
Game 3 (at Cincinnati): Cincinnati 8, Atlanta 1 (W- Erik Hanson, L- John Smoltz)
Game 4 (at Cincinnati): Cincinnati 7, Atlanta 6 (W- Johnny Ruffin- starter Tom Browning, L- Steve Avery)
Game 5 (at Cincinnati): Atlanta 11, Cincinnati 0 (W- Tom Glavine, L- Jose Rijo)

ALCS

Texas Rangers
New York Yankees

Game 1 (at New York): New York 4, Texas 0 (W- Jimmy Key, L- Kevin Brown)
Game 2 (at New York): Texas 6, New York 1 (W- Kenny Rogers, L- Jim Abbott)
Game 3 (at Texas): Texas 14, New York 3 (W- Matt Whiteside- starter Hector Fajardo, L- Melido Perez)
Game 4 (at Texas): New York 8, Texas 7 (W- Sterling Hitchcock- starter Terry Mulholland, L- Matt Whiteside- starter John Dettmer)
Game 5 (at Texas): Texas 15, New York 14 (W- John Dettmer- starter Rick Helling, L- Donn Pall- starter Jimmy Key)
Game 6 (at New York): Texas 15, New York 4 (W- Kevin Brown, L- Jim Abbott)

NLCS

Atlanta Braves
Montreal Expos

Game 1 (at Montreal): Montreal 7, Atlanta 6 (W- Tim Scott- starter Pedro Martinez, L- Greg McMichael- starter Tom Glavine)
Game 2 (at Montreal): Atlanta 7, Montreal 0 (W- Mike Stanton- starter Greg Maddux, L- Mel Rojas- starter Ken Hill)
Game 3 (at Atlanta): Montreal 2, Atlanta 1 (W- Jeff Fassero, L- Steve Avery)
Game 4 (at Atlanta): Montreal 7, Atlanta 2 (W- Mel Rojas- starter Kirk Rueter, L- Mark Wohlers- starter John Smoltz)
Game 5 (at Atlanta): Montreal 9, Atlanta 2 (W- Butch Henry, L- Tom Glavine)

World Series

Texas Rangers (52-62)
Montreal Expos (70-43)

Game 1 (at Montreal): Texas 5, Montreal 4 (W- Kenny Rogers, L- Ken Hill)
Game 2 (at Montreal): Montreal 10, Texas 7 (13) (W- Jeff Shaw- starter Pedro Martinez, L- Brian Bohanon- starter Kevin Brown)
Game 3 (at Texas): Texas 4, Montreal 0 (W- Hector Fajardo, L- Jeff Fassero)
Game 4 (at Texas): Montreal 7, Texas 6 (W- Jeff Shaw- starter Kirk Rueter, L- Tom Henke- starter John Dettmer)
Game 5 (at Texas): Montreal 3, Texas 2 (W- Pedro Martinez, L- Kenny Rogers)
Game 6 (at Montreal): Montreal 6, Texas 0 (W- Ken Hill, L- Kevin Brown)

In short, it would have been a bittersweet ending for the Expos and a Cinderella becoming a pumpkin story for the Rangers. But it would have been nice to see.

2010 Playoff predictions:

Rays defeat Rangers 3-1 (the Rangers aren't ready for the postseason)
Yankees defeat Twins 3-0 (the Twins have been good without Morneau but the Yankees seem hungrier)
Phillies defeat Reds 3-0 (the Reds are probably the worst team in the playoffs, they only won their division since it was the weakest in baseball and they were the only team not to have injuries)
Braves defeat Giants 3-2 (once again, the Braves seem hungrier)

Rays defeat Yankees 4-2
Phillies defeat Braves 4-1

World Series

Rays defeat Phillies 4-2

So far...

Rangers ahead of Rays 2-0 (seems like the Rays that won the AL East have disappeared)
Yankees ahead of Twins 2-0
Phillies ahead of Reds 2-0 (the Reds proved themselves to be the worst team in this postseason by getting no-hit in Game 1)
Giants and Braves tied 1-1

Update:
The Yankees sweep the Twins 3-0 while the Rays win Game 3 of their series to make it 2-1.

They should lengthen the divisional series to a best of seven like they did in the NBA a while ago. It'd help limit the amount luck plays into series. The better team would win more often, which is what playoffs are supposed to be about... finding the best team. Considering the season is 162 games and the other two rounds are seven games, you'd think they'd have already done it.

I guess I thought they were still those crappy Tom Hicks teams from the last decade. Maybe bankruptcy was a good thing for them.
