Boosch, I know you're familiar with them (you had Sweet Jane in your 100 songs) but you shoudl check out all 4 Velvet Underground albums if you haven't already. Great stuff, and for me even better than Transformer and Berlin.

Yeah, though I kind of like Reed's solo work, the VU records are phenomenol. I had owned Nico and White Light White heat for a good 15 years before i finally got round to getting their other two albums last year following the countdown, and you can't fault any of them.

I think the styles of The Idiot and Transformer overlap pretty heavily. They were both produced by David Bowie. And, sonically, I think they were both trying to achieve something similar.

Interesting, as I find The Idiot to be much murkier, more in line with Bowie's Berlin era albums or even Throbbing Gristle.

I have three Velvet Underground albums. I just forgot about including them.

My opinions:

The Velvet Underground and Nico: great songs but Nico isn't much of a singer.
The Velvet Underground: songs aren't as good as Velvet Underground and Nico.
White Light/White Heat: good album but Sister Ray is way too long.

You'll like Loaded better than any of those three.

You'd also like the rarities compilation, VU.

With the Laneway announcement I've been looking into a few bands who will be playing, and finding who appeals to me most. As well as The Panics, Laura Marling, The Drums and of course The Horrors, Yuck and The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, my favourite new band are DZ Deathrays, who sound kind of like a bit of Death From Above, with plenty of grooves and some cool riff outs.

DZ Deathrays - Gebbie Street

DZ Deathrays- The Mess Up

An album I just remembered that would have been in my best list had I remembered to was Neu!'s album 2. It is considered the first remix album ever. Here's an example.

The Crouching Tiger soundtrack is fantastic. Beautiful stuff.

I just ordered these from La-La-Land (which distributes a mix of film, television and video game scores, including most of Bear McCreary's works):

Jerry Goldsmith - Extreme Prejudice $9.99
Miles Goodman - Dunston Checks In $9.99 (a sentimental favorite of mine and not many Goodman scores are on CD, due to his work in comedies and early passing)
Trevor Jones - The Dark Crystal $9.99
Alan Silvestri - Dutch $9.99
Pino Donaggio - Seed of Chucky $4.99

I also nearly picked up Trevor Jones's Nate and Hayes, Alan Silvestri's Eraser and the Nathan Barr/Angelo Badalamenti score to Cabin Fever as well (I passed on the last one due to there being only a few Badalamenti cues).

I suggest we do a top ten songs of recent favorites or some such Maybe like a top 10 or 15 favorites of the past 18 months, etc, I know it's been a while that we did the top 100 but i'm just way too busy to do a hundred, and i doubt they really would have changed so much. But i think it would be cool to hear some new music, even if my list definitely wont be the most popular ;).

anyone in?

I like to give my music a while to grow on me, and so I'm happy just listing my favourite albums of the year at the end of each year. But I do intend, probably not for a few months though, to do a top 50/100 albums list.

Yes, we really should do a top 50 albums list, even if it's only a handful of us.

As for new music, there's always 6's six songs and albums of the year to look forward to ;)

The problem with the idea: there hasn't been 10-15 good songs in the past 18 months (unless you want to list Adele's 21 album). The music industry only cares about autotune, good looks and gimmicks.
