Ozzy - Linkin Park, "Numb"
I definitely used to love this song when it first came out, it was a bit overplayed but still wins me over every time. The contrast between soft and hard vocals is great. I find the lyrics incredibly meaningful, but their writing is always very expressive and emotional.
Much like Barca I could almost always count on you for a selection I would enjoy, the ones I didn't like were few and far between.

Side note: As I'm sure most are aware, I just got back from a music festival, so I'm a little out of it. I'd hoped to do it before leaving, but didn't have time, so I'm working on my #1 post now, it will be on time however may be a bit incomprehensible :)

Buscemi - Derek and the Dominoes, "Layla"
Well I listened to it twice in an attempt to pull out something positive, but as I mentioned last time around that this was posted, I cannot stand this song for really no quantifiable reason.
Like has already been mentioned, I had a really hard time getting a sense of what your style actually is, I still feel like I don't have a grasp on it. The first half felt like a grab bag of random music, the second half was better but never really became cohesive in such a way that I could say what I think you like.

Leestu - Nirvana, "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
I love it clearly, it is in my own top 5, so I dunno what else I need to say :)

Your list was very hit or miss with me, you provided some of my favorite finds of the countdown, but then other fell completely flat. Some of my favorites:
99 Jeff Buckley, Hallelujah
97 Mumford and Sons, Little Lion Man
95 Redgum, I Was Only Nineteen
92 Augie March, One Crowded Hour
86. The Church, Under the Milky Way
68. Silversun Pickups, Lazy Eye
54. Pixies, Hey
51. The Smiths, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
42. The Dead Kennedys, Holiday in Cambodia
32. Violent Femmes, Blister in the Sun
25. The Pogues feat. Kirsty McColl, Fairytale of New York
20. Soundgarden, Jesus Christ Pose
19. At the Drive In, Invalid Litter Dept.
13. Nirvana, Sliver
9. The Smiths, How Soon is Now
4. XTC, Dear God

Your family likewise has some incredibly great taste in music, you are very lucky that you all have such similar likes.

Chien - Nina Simone, “Ne me quitte pas”

Chien, Chien, Chien.. you joined us far too late in the game! Though you've only been with us a short while your selections have been very single-minded, and though I don't always like them, I can certainly say they are very good songs in general.
I can definitely see why this is your favorite song, it is truly spleen and soulful. I am not terribly familiar with Nina Simone's work but this countdown has made me more aware of her at least, and I certainly want to check out more of her music after this. As a big fan of Antony and the Johnsons, I wasn't quite hearing the link before, but after this song I see exactly where the stunning vocal inspiration comes from.

W - Johnny Cash "Folsom Prison Blues"
Like Chien, this #1 is very representative of your personal style, beyond a doubt. I am not a huge fan of the song, its a bit too novelty country to me, as I've mentioned in previous postings of the song, but that seems to be your thing so I can easily understand why you like it so much.

I've been waiting for some time to see Video killed the Radio Star show up, but never expected it to come from a 4 year old! I think when I was 4 I had only been exposed to lame kid songs, so kudos to you for exposing the kid to good music early on :) Pretty sure she has better taste than you do! I kid, I kid...

Some favorites from your list:
86. Rage Against the Machine, Bombtrack
82. Jet, Are You Gonna Be My Girl
78. R.E.M., Man On the Moon
75. Rolling Stones, Sympathy For the Devil
48. Rage Against the Machine, Sleep Now in the Fire
44. Nirvana, Lithium
40. Green Day, Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)
28. The Soggy Bottom Boys, Man of Constant Sorrow
20. Nirvana, The Man Who Sold the World
19. Johnny Cash, Hurt
15. Rage Against the Machine, Bulls On Parade

Hey everyone, I just want to let you guys know that I’m sorry I wasn’t around for the Top 10. My beloved desktop I’ve had for 4 years finally decided to end it all and now it won’t even turn on. I thought I’d backed it up, but of course, I cannot find the external hard drive. Anyway I’m cool enough that I remember the very end of my list: my Top 3 songs. So I’ll give em to you here now because I know the suspense has been killing you guys. I know you guys aren’t happy about the dearth of Kanye songs lately, so I’ll try and make up for it.

#3 - Lauryn Hill – To Zion

I really wasn’t into music a whole lot when her first (and only) debut album came out, back in 1998 or what have you – and I guess technically I’m still not. But I do remember how huge “Doo Wop (That Thing)” and “Everything Is Everything” were and how she was everywhere and being touted as the next great thing. As you know, that never happened (for whatever reasons) and all we have of Lauryn Hill’s genius is her one amazing, incredible album (Until she makes another one but who knows if that’ll ever happen?). And my favorite, favorite track from my favorite album is “To Zion”, which comes as close to any song does to making me become emotional every time I hear it, simply through beautiful vocals. I don’t really care what she’s singing about, since some people think it’s about being a Zionist, which I guess is some crazy religion not unlike Scientology. I can – and I have – put this song on repeat for hours and never like it any less.

#2 – Adele – Hometown Glory

OK, so I think you guys know by now that I’ve got a pretty nice soft spot for easy, sickly sweet pop music as sung by women (which says all kinds of things about me subconsciously…). Here’s my third song in my Top 30 from Adele (I had one in the upper 10s somewhere but I don’t remember where exactly, but the song is "Cold Shoulder") and I know what I want from her and she delivers every time. She has such a great voice, and the strings here just compliment her greatly; they give it a kind of epic, movie soundtrack feel. Yes, perhaps it’s a bit too new to be so high up, but it could’ve been released yesterday and I think I’d be as infatuated with it as ever.

And now before I get to my ultimate most favoritestest song ever, I just want to thank all of you guys for participating in this experiment. I joined late because music is not as much of an interest to me as most of you, but then I dropped in and saw how much fun you guys were having (plus the rest of the board was as deserted as a theater playing Jonah Hex) and had to hop on the bandwagon. Even at times, you guys made yourselves very clear if you didn’t like something (I think this is where Geezer’s face drifts into focus…lol), it was still good times all around.

And of course, I have to thank Patrick the Shrykester for staying on everyone’s balls to keep up with their lists. I know it must get annoying to send out hundreds of emails every week, and it takes a hell of a lot of dedication and love for this site, and all of our friendship and personal viewpoints, to do that. And just to think, he’s been doing that caliber of work for our various sites for years! I think we all realize we wouldn’t even still be in existence if it wasn’t for the work that guy pours into everything FM-related (or is RS-related?). So thank you, Shryke.

And now my favorite song of all-time:

#1 - Kanye West – Spaceship

Yup – one last Kanye song. Although I recognize Eminem as the greatest rapper of all-time (Jay-Z, Biggie, Rakim, and Nas are all up there too), I believe Kanye West is in another stratosphere. To me, he’s not just a rapper with great lyrics and hella personality – he’s a soulful musician who pours every ounce of himself into his product. Yeah, he raps – but I don’t consider him a “rapper”. And “Spaceship”, his ode to the soulless-ness of a dead-end job and how it can just make your whole life miserable is something that struck a nerve with me at the time. I was probably too young to really understand what it feels like (I was in a shitty job, but I was still in high school), but the ennui was still there. And who doesn’t want to just get away from it all sometimes? This song will always have a place in my heart, and even it’s not as musically diverse or groundbreaking as a #1 spot might deserve, I simply love it. Plus, “In the mall til 12 when my schedule said 9” is like the story of my life.

So, again, thanks everyone - I hope we can do something like this again. And I'll give my thoughts on everyone's #1's later today.

Banks:

First, you're welcome. I hope that at some point in time you can re-create your #4-#11 songs, because having a list with a gap that big is like having a smile with a few missing teeth. But no rush.

While it's true that your list, taken as a whole, has generally been my least favorite, it's still been most welcome. (Your list averaged an exact 5.0 with me.) My very favorites have been:

Eminem, "Lose Yourself"
Michael Jackson, "Bad"
Ray Charles, "Georgia On My Mind"
Gorillaz, "Stylo" (you weren't the first to post it, but I liked it)
Regina Spektor, "The Call" (easily my favorite of your songs that I hadn't heard before).

Plus, it was good to see Al Green, Stevie Wonder and the Stones on your list. As for your top 3:

Lauryn Hill, "To Zion" - God, this sounds like a Stevie Wonder song! Even Lauryn's voice sounds like a slightly less masculine version of Stevie's voice. I liked it. (6)

Adele, "Hometown Glory" - She's got a good voice, to be sure, but I'm just not wild about her music. Her voice and physique remind me a lot of Alison Moyet from the early 80's. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yjpf4h5hK8g) (6)

Kanye West, "Spaceship" - I definitely identify with the message, but I just can't get into the music. (4)

Becs is up next, followed by Six, UDM, Geezer and finally myself.

1. Queen feat. David Bowie - Under Pressure
I can't imagine anyone will be surprised at this selection from me, I've made it clear throughout that these guys separately have done some of my favorite music of all time, it only stands to reason that their coming together would result in a an epic and timeless work of art. This song has one of the most recognizable beats of ever, yet most folks my age aren't familiar with the actual song. I guess I shouldn't have been, but I certainly was very taken aback by the fact that this showed up prominently on Geezer's list as well, I guess it is proof positive that the certain style we like lends itself to enjoying this sort of sound as well.
For me I just find the lyrics very moving, I listened to this every morning when I got in to work to get myself going for the longest time. Who needs coffee when you have Bowie and Mercury.

Since the studio version has been posted previously I'll actually lead off with a live performance, which I think is likely to have been the most amazing live show of all time:

The studio version:

Cover by The Used and My Chemical Romance:

And of course... Vanilla Ice "Ice Ice Baby"

Next up, the only person I really talked to about this was my best buddy from back home. He acted as my "proofreader" on the original list of 100, and managed to get through it without TOO much laughter, so I figured my list wouldn't be too ridiculed to go public with. He found himself unable to limit his list to merely a handful, so without further ado, I give you Nathan's top 25:

On Banks

Welcome back, Banks, and sory to hear about your technical problems. I lost a lot of stuff from my laptop a year ago and it was hell trying to get everything back, so I know your pain.

Sorry to say, Banks, but like Shryke you were one of my least favourite of the group. Your overall taste ranged from mainstream hip-hop to pop ballads to the occasional contemporary pop-punk hit. None of which I like! From Mariah Carey to Fallout Boy to some rather embarrassing tracks from Eddie Murphy and Will Smith, most failed to impress me. At least there were some high points though, as your Al Green picks were actually great, and you even snuck a Rolling Stones song in your Top 100! And there were appearances from legends like Michael Jackson and Ray Charles so it wasn't all bad.

As for your Top 3, well they didn't surprise me too much. I don't like the Fugees or Lauryn Hill. She/they are mostly listened to by people who don't like music. I bet that Fugees record is the most played album during dinner parties. It's music to ignore. As for Adele, well you've posted a few of her songs throughout your list. And it's always the same: she has a good voice, but it's that same ol classic soul voice that every pop artists seems to have these days, and the music is so unexceptional (especially Hometown Glory, which goes nowhere) that as a package it's just instantly forgettable for me. Sorry!

I will give you this, though: I do appreciate Kanye in some ways. Yes, he seems to be a dick in real life, but his music does stand out. I think it's because he doesn't just rely on his rapping to make the song, which I found a lot of the non-underground rap posted here over the Top 100 project to do. I think Kanye spends some time on the music too. There's some interesting sounds going on in Spaceship, like there's two soul songs being played at once to the beat of some laid-back funk. So I can excuse some of the poor lyrics. Very intriguing and actually something I'll revisit.

On Becs

Well Becs, you have said this yourself about some people, but I found your list to be all over the place. You picked songs that I despised and songs that blew me away, and they were at such polar extremes that I honestly didn't know what to expect each day. I mean, y'all know by now I hate My Chemical Romance, Muse, and I'm no fan of Live. But then you'd have some top songs by Bowie (your highest, Moonage Daydream, is one of my favourites), The Smashing Pumpkins, and Weezer. And THEN you'd surprise us all with stuff like ABBA and Ace of Base. So yeah, you couldn't get more confusing than that!

Still, I really enjoyed your list. We shared one song on our lists, the brilliant Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. And your Top 10 was actually great, especially your Top 4. And surprisingly, it was no surprise that you picked Under Pressure as your #1 song. As I've said before, it truly is an amazing song. Listening to it, you'd think Bowie's voice would be destroyed by the power of Mercury's, but Bowie gave himself the best bit, bless him! A great, great song, and one of the few rock star collaborations that truly works. And on that note I'm not even gonna go near the MCR/The Used cover of that song. I may explode with rage ;)

Your buddy Nathan has a pretty solid taste too. Good to see Wilco be represented by someone (not my favourite song of theirs by a long shot, but still nice). Love that Bon Iver song, really beautiful. And there's some great stuff from the Pixies, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Elliott Smith, etc. So pass on my props to him.

Anyway, Becs, thanks for being a part of this, your picks were certainly great to explore!

Pantera, “Cemetery Gates”

This wasn't new to me... but, for whatever reason, I never really got into Pantera. So, I hadn't heard this in a LONG time (before proceeding to listen to your YouTube clip about 5-6 times). This song is fucking awesome. That main riff (that first comes in at 1:34 and is subsequently revisited throughout the song) is just KILLER--something Megadeth, Metallica, or (I daresay) even Sabbath would be proud to have been their own. Great intro, too. The vocals were something of a weak spot, in my opinion--but it's a minor complaint. Anselmo simply never struck me as a particularly good singer, though I prefer this type of singing to his later "screamier/gruntier" vocal approach. I'm (re-)listening to the track as I write this, and I've decided to pick up the album. So, for that, I thank you. If I dig it as much as I do this track, which album do you suggest next?

(Interesting to note that early incarnations of Pantera and Megadeth were THIS close to merging into one band. That certainly would've really been something.)

As for your list overall, it was (at times) a mixed bag for me. I'm sorta in the same boat as Six when it comes to metal. I loved it as a teenager, but some of its appeal is lost on me nowadays. (Though, clearly, I haven't given up on the genre entirely. Good music is good music.). You got me to see Mastodon in a new light (and I'm enjoying their music much more now), "Desert of Song" got me to get the full album (though I STILL think the vocals ruin an otherwise amazing LP), I thought Volbeat was hilarious (and I subsequently got my hands on the track itself), AND I got my hands on a Death album (which isn't half-bad, by the way).

Here are my 20 favorite tracks from your list:

81. Megadeth, Hangar 18
80. Black Sabbath, Electric Funeral
78. Between the Buried and Me, Desert of Song
76. Jimi Hendrix, If 6 Was 9
75. Metallica, Ride the Lightning
72. The Clash, London Calling
68. Dead Kennedys, California Uber Alles
57. Faith No More, Epic
30. Volbeat, Sad Man's Tongue
28. Death, Crystal Mountain
26. Megadeth, Holy Wars...The Punishment Due
25. Johnny Cash, Folsom Prison Blues
14. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Breaking the Girl
13. Smashing Pumpkins, Bullet With Butterfly Wings
7. Jimi Hendrix, Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
6. Metallica, For Whom the Bell Tolls
5. The Doors, Peace Frog
4. Led Zeppelin, Kashmir
2. Iron Maiden, The Trooper
1. Pantera, Cemetery Gates

Wow. I guess I took you for granted during the countdown itself, but your list really rocked in general. You're the youngest person here (right?), but I think your list prompted me to acquire as much new music as anyone else. Props, dude!

Thank you NSpan. To answer your questions Yes I am the youngest person here and If you enjoy Cowboys from hell the next Pantera records you should pick up are Vulgar Display Of Power and Far Beyond Driven. Vulgar Display Of Power is seen by many Pantera fans as their best record. For me it is not but it does have a lot of fantastic and memorable tracks. Pretty much the same goes for Far Beyond Driven. It is a great record. In my eyes you pretty much can't go wrong with the 3 of those records.

Heh, I actually specifically told him to check out your list of songs, because you two share very similar tastes in many aspects. Though you may notice he has a serious penchant for blues in addition to his indie-ddiction. Before you guys he was probably my best source of musical recommendations.

I know Nina Simone (slightly) and obviously didn't know this song but the lyrics were incredible. Definitely not a happy song but very poignant. And can somebody explain the "Spleen" thing to me. I missed something.

I didn't like a some of your list since I don't like country but there were some great ones in the classic rock section. If it wasn't for Cash, Hank Sr. and Willie, I would barely like ANY country, especially Johnny Cash. you did pick some good ones. I am just glad to see a distinct absence of shit modern country.
