SONG #42

Shrykespeare
Edelweiss, “Bring Me Edelweiss”
(1988)
Yea, that was definitely weird. It really wasn't as bad as everyone is making out, I obviously quite liked parts, but over all it was a little bit TOO all over the place for me to think of it as top 50 material. I just know in the middle of the night this is going to be stuck in my head.

NSpan
The Doors, “When The Music's Over”
(1967)
The first part was okay, but then it lost my attention entirely.

Numbersix
Mission of Burma, “Trem 2”
(1982)
I really liked it, that kind of oscillating guitar sound was great.

Geezer
Foo Fighters, "Learn to Fly"

Love it, one of their best tracks.

undeadmonkey
Dean Martin, "That's Amore"

Cute..

leestu
The Dead Kennedys, “Holiday In Cambodia”
(1980)
Not their best work, but ok.

*Buscemi
Scorpions, “Still Loving You”

FUCKING WOW! That was amazing. I've never heard this before, but again wow. This one may out do Little Lion Man as my favorite discovery of the game so far.

silversurfer
David Bowie, “Life On Mars?”
(1971) (also becs' and leestu's #61)
Always please to hear one of my selections again, great pick.

transformers
Korn, "Got The Life”

I like this song, but it tends to be a little bit too in your face for my liking.

W
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, “Ohio”

Not really a fan.

englishozzy
Rooster, "Deep and Meaningless"

A little throw away, but I enjoyed it. Kind of reminded me of Gavin Degraw.

BarcaRulz
Led Zeppelin, "Immigrant Song"
(also silversurfer's #75)
Liked it before, still a good one.

Ron Burgundy
Michael Jackson. “Thriller”

Never been a fan of this song for some reason, just doesn't do anything for me.

Chienfantome
Portishead, “Glory Box”
(also silversurfer's #99 and becs' #80)
Yet another of my picks in the same round, woo!
At least we can abort fetuses. Bad grammar and language last a lifetime.

SONG #41

Shrykespeare
Audioslave, “Like a Stone”
(2003) (also englishozzy's #59)
Yep, you definitely can't go wrong with chris cornell, excellent pick.

NSpan
The Beatles, “Michelle”
(1965)
Wow, I've never heard this song before, and I really didn't like it. Something about the flat note in "my-bell" bothered me too. That said, bad for these guys is still good.

Numbersix
The Smiths. “I Know it’s Over”
(1986)
Yes please, may I have another? :) loved it.

Geezer
Alkaline Trio, “Stupid Kid”

Well after that last song, its hard to think of his voice as being like silk, but a fun (pop)punk track anyway.

undeadmonkey
Cobra Starship, "Living in the Sky with Diamonds"

Never heard of this band or song, but yea I too thought it was going to be a bad cover of Elton John. I quite liked it, I really enjoy this style of synth-rock stuff, definitely will be checking into more of their music. It didn't have as much originality as I really would expect to hear at this level, very derivative, but enjoyable nonetheless.

leestu
Beck “Loser”
(1993) (also W's #93 and Buscemi's #84)
Still hate this song.

Buscemi
Public Enemy, “Fight the Power”

Ugh..

silversurfer
The Buzzcocks, “ Orgasm Addict”
(1977)
Not bad, a little repetitive.

transformers
Between The Buried and Me, "Disease, Injury, Madness”

You weren't kidding, that was like two separate songs intertwined more than one song, but I liked it.

W
Eric Clapton, “Layla (Unplugged)”

hate this song, really disliked this performance even more.

englishozzy
The Offspring, "Can't Get My Head Around You"

Oh man, I had forgot about this song, great great pick.

BarcaRulz
Oomph!, "Augen Auf"

Quite liked it, a little repetitive though.

Ron Burgundy
Eminem feat Dr Dre, “Guilty Conscience”

Nope. As usual the video was at least entertaining.

Chienfantome
Coldplay, “Trouble”

<3 coldplay, good pick man.

Preview of my 40-31
1975 single from a swedish band
A 1979 protest song
1991 single about coming to terms with death, released less than 2 months before the death of a band member.
1996 #1 modern rock track originally released as a b-side in 1995
1997 #1 modern rock track with a rather racy video
1998 song from an album with 3 top 5 modern rock singles (including this one).
2003 top 10 single from a brit rock band
2003 alternative song, with a video styled after silent film and starring a very well know actor.
2007 rock single that was actually written in its early stages during the filming of a live tour dvd for the band.
Possibly the most well known and well used movie score piece of all time.

Thread Recap

Top 6 Songs I previously heard (and are not on my list)
1. The Smiths, I Know It's Over, numbersix
2. Black Sabbath, N.I.B., Nspan
3. R.E.M., Everybody Hurts, englishozzy
4. The Mars-Volta, Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus, transformers2
5. The Dead Kennedys, Holiday in Cambodia, Leestu
6. Mission of Burma, Trem 2, numbersix

Top 6 Songs that were new to me
1. Talking Heads, Life During Wartime, NSpan
2. Sigur Ros, Ny Batteri, numbersix
3. Damien Rice, 9 Crimes, BarcaRulz
4. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Ohio, W
5. Captain Beefheart, Ice Cream For Crow, numbersix
6. Against Me!, Reinventing Axl Rose, Geezer

Once again six has proved to be my ally in this thing, consistently providing excellent quality throughout. NSpan was also very much improved this round, with his magical mystery musical education providing many classic songs and a couple of unknown's to me also. Leestu and becs were consistently decent, Geezer and tranny were very hit and miss (sometimes great, sometimes a little too generic radio friendly for my liking, while with tranny sometimes fascinating sometimes ear crushing). Buscemi was probably most improved despite his Werewolves of London song, with many songs I loved (The Clash, New Order, Bowie, U2, Scorpions and Public Enemy). W had quite a few standouts, including a new favourite of mine in the CSNY song, while englishozzy provided a few songs I liked from long gone, and a few I'd rather forget. Barca and Ron were generally strong, while Chien has proved there is definitely some potential for taste in France. Most consistent performer this round had to be Shryke though. Not a single track from his was bareable, never mind good. Maybe that's why I keep finding myself liking six's picks so much, as they sound awesome after suffering through Shryke's pick beforehand! I look forward to our tastes diverging even further from each other in the coming rounds, buddy!

Quick look at my next ten songs:
- 1956 Blues song by one of the most indimidating performers ever.
- 1991 Debut single from the debut album of a popular grunge/alt rock band.
- 1964 Number one single from highly successful British Invasion band.
- 1979 Second single to be released by popular English band.
- 1980 First British number-one for popular English mods.
- 1991 Album track from highly influential dream pop group.
- 1997 Song written by one of the most popular English band's of the last 2 decades for a movie soundtrack.
- 1985 Single from influential Scottish rock group from their debut album.
- 1993 Single from one of the most popular alt rock records of the last two decades.
- 1979 Song from post-punk act which was recently covered by The Killers.

Sorry my choices this thread were so bad, surfer, but...

One page ago, you said Audioslave was "OK". But then you turn around and say "not one track was bearable". Would you like some syrup for those waffles?

(Just kidding, you know.)

I like Audioslave, just that song isn't a highlight for me. And I take any chance I get to stick a dig in on Shrykey!

And you know you'd never get through the checkpoint's at the airport in NZ, they don't let any old riff raff in this country, especially not Aussies!!

Shrykespeare
Audioslave, “Like a Stone” (2003) (also englishozzy's #59)
Good song. Probably took a while to grow on me but is probably now my favourite of theirs. Prefer most of Soundgarden but.

NSpan
The Beatles, “Michelle” (1965)
It's a nice Beatles song. Probably the only Beatles song that I remember when, where and how I first heard it. Not sure what that means apart from that it was memorable?

Numbersix: The Smiths. “I Know it’s Over” (1986)
Brilliant pick. You just can't go wrong with The Smiths. Great intro about music being there when you need it. I always love Morrissey's vocals and lyrics. From this song the lyrics that I took a lot from at the time, were: "It's so easy to laugh, It's so easy to hate, It takes strength to be gentle and kind,...,It's so easy to laugh, It's so easy to hate, It takes guts to be gentle and kind".

Geezer - Alkaline Trio, “Stupid Kid”
It was alright. Probably would have liked this more about 10 years ago, but not so much now.

becs
The Beatles, "Hey Jude”
One of their best IMO. Love the singalong epic style ending.

undeadmonkey
Cobra Starship, "Living in the Sky with Diamonds"
There's not really much in this song is there? It's not bad, just nothing much to it IMO.

Buscemi
Public Enemy, “Fight the Power”
One of the few rap bands I enjoyed and got into a bit. Probably due to Terminator X (I think?) and all the interesting noises sounds, and beats, that he contributed to the songs. On top of that they were trying to say something important and make a difference. I still can't listen to a whole album of theirs in one sitting but any of the tracks on their own or in small doses I quite enjoy. Now to contradict myself, I couldn't resist the opportunity to see them live when I had the chance. I'm still surprised they toured Australia and included WA. Anyway good pick. One of their best songs, maybe even their best.

silversurfer
The Buzzcocks, “ Orgasm Addict” (1977)
Ha, ha. Good fun-punk song, haven't heard it for ages.

transformers
Between The Buried and Me, "Disease, Injury, Madness”
Just like you said there were parts of it I liked. Quite a lot of it actually. However it's like it wasn't all connected properly, and I can't handle the vocals. What's the point of them if you can't understand what they are saying? {I'm going to contradict myself soon}

W
Eric Clapton, “Layla”
I like this acoustic version much better than the original. Good song.

englishozzy: The Offspring, "Can't Get My Head Around You"
It's okay, but just doesn't compare to their earlier material.

BarcaRulz: Oomph!, "Augen Auf"
That was fun! Quite liked it. The sound of the German language really seems to suit this sound. From the link it appears to be a song about playing hide & seek???, but who really cares what they are saying. {told ya!}

Ron Burgundy: Eminem feat Dr Dre, “Guilty Conscience”
I don't mind this Eminem song. I think it's an interesting take on the old good versus bad story set up.

Chienfantome: Coldplay, “Trouble”
Pretty good. Not a huge fan because I find a lot of their songs a bit sameish but I do really love his voice in songs like this.
