On Fight The Power:

I chose the song for its importance to the rap genre and for what the artists have to say on fighting against conformism. People should do something against oppression and fight back. Indeed, the early part of the 1990's would feature many African-American artists making political and social-themed projects.

Also, the song is great.
Everything on this post is strictly the opinion and only the opinion of Buscemi.

What a speech Six, very interesting. Do you do that at the end of each thread ?
It's not funny having the same tastes so often, so I think it's great we clearly have different tastes when it comes to music. I know I spend too much time in movie theaters to listen to music, so I'm not surprised my choices seem unimpressive. But to me they all are proofs of great taste. Aaaaah, subjectivity... ;)

I do Chien. My self-absorbtion knows no limits, so I try to tell everyone what I think of their taste. I've also kept note (and score, kind of) of each round to see what I think of every pick.

You bring up a good point, maybe you're too busy being in cinemas to actually spend time listening to good music, so instead you must settle with the lmited amount of music you hear. It's like a person loving Prince of Persia because they don't have access to arthouse or foreign cinema ;)

To answer your question, Chien, yes, we do this at the end of each thread. We review the songs that we liked the most that other people posted (both songs that we had heard before and songs we hadn't), as well as a non-specific description of the next ten songs on our list, which will be in the next thread, much like six just did.

I haven't yet decided what day coming up I will use for the "guessing contest". I'll probably decide that when W sends me his next ten picks.

Ooooooh, I did not know that had to be done by each of us... Movies is about the only thing I have a striking memory for, so I'm suddenly panicking!!! ^^

Six do you say that Prince of Persia thing on purpose ? Did you visit my blog tonight ? Because I surprised myself at enjoying Prince of Persia last weekend ! Yeah, I know, Prince of Persia, what's happening to me !!! ;) I think it's because in France, May is a desert when it comes to films, except for "Enter the Void", "Date night" or Godard's latest. So I found it refreshing to see an old fasioned adventure (with wayyyyy too much FX though).

Shrykespeare
Audioslave, « Like a stone »

It’s not bad. Yeah, I’d even say it’s nice to listen to. When it comes to Chris Cornell though, I prefer his 007 tune “You know my name”, love that one !

NSpan
The Beatles, “Michelle”

I’m surprised Six didn’t know that one. In France it’s one of the most famous Beatles song. Well, of course, entitling it “Michelle” helps, and putting a couple of French lyrics here and there helps getting the frenchies’ attention. Very nice song.

Number6
The Smiths, “I know it’s over”

The Smiths, I know by name much more than by the songs. Enjoyable song. I’m sure I could like this one very much if I played it a few times in the coming months.

Geezer
Alkaline Trio, “Stupid Kid”

I don’t really like the voice of the singer… other than that… nothing special to say, neither good nor bad. I’ll have forgotten the song in about 3 minutes probably…

Becs
The Beatles, “Hey Jude”

You beat me to it becs, I’ve got this one coming up on my list very shortly…

Undeadmonkey
Cobra Starship, “Living in the sky with diamonds”

Good rhythm. Not a great song, but quite catchy.

Leestu
Beck, “Loser”

Wouaaaaouh, you know what, I know that song, but had no idea Beck’s the interpreter of it ! Waouh, I hadn’t heard this song in yeaaaaars. Great to listen to it again. Great song.

Buscemi
Public Enemy, “Fight the power”

I’m really really not a rap specialist or even amateur. I can probably count the rap songs I like with the fingers of a single hand. I remember this one, hadn’t heard it in a longtime, like “Loser”. But I don’t really sense joy in hearing it again.

Silversufer
The Buzzcocks, “Orgasm Addict”

Well, the name of the band and the name of the song certainly go along really well ^_^
Funny, but not memorable.

Transformers
Between the buried and me, “Disease, injury, madness”

Ooooooh, had I heard that one on the radio, I would have changed the frequence after about 4 seconds of the song, but out of respect for you tranny, and for this thread, I gave the song its chance longer. It became listenable after two minutes, when the dude stopped singing like a devil.

W
Eric Clapton, “Layla”

Fantastic song W, a true classic, I’m glad to listen to it, it had been a while. I don’t think I had ever heard it live, excellent version of it.

Englishozzy
The Offspring, “Can’t get my around you”

I’ve never liked the voice of The Offspring’s singer, and apparently, seeing my reaction when he started singing, this hasn’t changed to me. Not a fan of the song either.

Barca
Oomph!, “Augen auf”

German hard rock, totally my kind of music….. just kidding ;)

Ron Burgundy
Eminem feat Dre, “Guilty conscience”

Eminem is about the only rapper I’m curious about when he releases an album. Not really a song that strikes me, but it’s fun and listenable.

Shrykespeare -- Sublime, “Badfish” (1992)
Awesome pick, brutha! I mentioned before, but: Sublime is the all-time ultimate "compromise band" of my generation. No matter your typical musical preferences, EVERYBODY can dig on Sublime. Have you ever heard their cover of the "Hong Kong Phooey" theme song? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfHGOUqhnos

Numbersix -- Johnny Cash, “Hurt” (2002)
Just to be clear: it's not like the Man in Black was sitting around listening to NIN records and said, "Hey, I should cover this track!" The concept was merely presented to him by Rick Rubin--and Cash wisely accepted. Either way, it's an amazing performance--and (though it certainly doesn't replace the original) it fits in perfectly with Cash's final work. Knowing how soon he'd die after making this recording is a bittersweet thought: the song is a thematically appropriate farewell.

Geezer -- Beastie Boys, "Fight For Your Right (To Party)"
Absolute classic. Kicks ass, and it's hilarious (without becoming pure novelty).

becs -- Elton John, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight”
Well-written, but the performance/production is a bit over the top for my tastes. Maybe I'm just not in the right mood (but, then again, I can't think of a time where I've said, "I know, everybody, let's put on some Elton John!"). Despite that, I think it IS objectively a "good" song.

undeadmonkey -- The Ting Tings, "Shut Up and Let Me Go"
Very chic.

leestu -- Prince and the Revolution, “When Doves Cry” (1984)
Growing up, I really never understood the amount of praise Prince received. I've definitely warmed up to his music since--though I still think he was/is vastly overrated. I still can't watch his videos (or movie) without laughing. But, when taken on its own, the music really has something to it.

Buscemi -- U2, “Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For”
englishozzy -- U2, "Vertigo"
I fucking HATE U2. They embody all the excess, whine, pretense, and pomp of the rock star stereotype--and the music doesn't do ANYTHING for me. Bland and unemotive. These songs aren't any exception (though I prefer the latter). Sorry, mates.

silversurfer -- Faith No More, “From Out Of Nowhere” (1989)
Excellent choice. Though I've still never heard the source for the sample in the song--I wonder how heavily they "borrowed"... though, knowing Patton & Co., I'm sure they made it their own.

transformers -- Alice In Chains, "Would?”
Good song from a great band... though I never considered it amongst their absolute best. I might have to look at it in a new light (or, at least, attempt to)..

W -- Ray Charles, “What'd I Say (Parts I & II)”
It's a great song. Oddly though, I've never formed a connection with his music in the way that I can with most classic soul and R&B artists. I appreciate the quality (and, obviously, the importance), but he just isn't my go-to guy when it comes to music like this. I hear his records--and suddenly it's like I have the ears of Beceezer and simply cannot fully appreciate good art. My ears close up and I just wanna listen to MY bands instead (though, in this case, that would be Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Smokey Robinson, etc.)

BarcaRulz -- Blind Melon, "No Rain"
Absolutely amazing track. I can't say that without bias or nostalgia--but I think I'd like it just as much if I had been hearing it for the very first time. Get your hands on the albums Soup and Nico. They blow the eponymous record out of the water, imo.

Ron Burgundy
Queen, “Bohemian Rhapsody”
What more could be said about this song that hasn't already? A stone cold classic.

Chienfantome -- Keane, “Somewhere Only We Know”
I went to a show where they headlined, but we attended solely in order to see the opening act (The Redwalls, I believe). We didn't find Keane particularly engaging, so we only stuck around for about 2/3s of their set. Hearing this song doesn't exactly make me regret leaving a few minutes early.
On the run from Johnny Law ... ain't no trip to Cleveland.

Shrykespeare: Audioslave, “Like a Stone” (2003) (also englishozzy's #59) - Don't worry Shryke, I won't jump the pond just yet to exact my revenge following your aural assasination attempt (flights to the US from here can be expensive..) and this song wasn't enough to send me over the edge either. I like Audioslave, I have both of their records (though granted I only own their second one due to a cheap deal), but this isn't one of my favourites of theirs. I much prefer their more upbeat numbers, namely Cochise and Show Me How To Live. But this is ok.

NSpan: The Beatles, “Michelle” (1965) - I must say, despite this not being one of The Beatles biggest songs, I was surprised to hear six hadn't heard this one before. I think this is one of their understated masterpieces, it just oozes class and through its simplicity it becomes timeless. Really nice to hear this one.

Numbersix: The Smiths. “I Know it’s Over” (1986) - Man, I was sooo close to putting this song on my own list. In the end I stuck with just the two Smiths classics, but it is a delight to hear this one again. To be honest though, I could have picked anything from The Queen Is Dead and it would have been a winner, the record is probably in my top 10 records of all time. Brilliant in every way.

Geezer: Alkaline Trio, “Stupid Kid” - Didn't really stand out to me above the likes of other bottom of the barrel pop punk bands such as New Found Glory etc. Just very forgettable generic stuff I'm afraid.

becs: The Beatles, "Hey Jude” - Often heralded as The Beatles best work. I admit it is very good though probably a little overrated. I do like how each stage of the song flows so well, really epitomises how to achieve an 'epic' song in the correct manner. Anyway, six you are correct, it was written by Paul for John's son as a means of comforting Julian following John and Cinthia divorcing.

undeadmonkey: Cobra Starship, "Living in the Sky with Diamonds" - Man, I hate these guys. They are just so 'hip' without actually having any talent. That song Good Girls Go Bad was cringeworthy and totally overplayed over here, and this isn't really much of an improvement. Quite horrible really.

leestu: Beck “Loser” (1993) (also W's #93 and Buscemi's #84) - Hmm, I haven't heard this version before. It was cool. He is such a great live act, I remember seeing him about 10 years ago and at the time I think he must have been in my top 3 live acts I'd ever seen, he gives so much to his shows. Do you really think Mellow Gold is Beck's best record? I think bar this the album is pretty weak on the whole, probably his worst album yet. Odelay and Mutations are definite favourites of my own.

Buscemi: Public Enemy, “Fight the Power” - I've heard this song numerous times over the years. I totally respect what they achieve back then, they did seem to actually care about the music they were creating. Not a genre I'd ever really seek out, just isn't something I'd listen to over and over again, but I can see why it made your list.

silversurfer: The Buzzcocks, “ Orgasm Addict” (1977) - Six, a good starting point, heck probably the best place to start would be their Singles Going Steady record. It has pretty much everything you ever need to hear from the guys, and I'd say of the 25 songs or so 20 of them are awesome. Check it out. And glad to see I met your needs with one of my songs again Shryke, you know I don't like to dissapoint. I take it as a complement now that you rank my selections so low, as it obviously means I have taste. I mean, how on earth can you take seriously the comments from a fan of ABBA, Bee Gees, Enya and some weird Austrian yodeling rap group....

transformers: Between The Buried and Me, "Disease, Injury, Madness” - Yeah, this didn't work for me as much as the last song of their's you posted. It had its moments, but I guess for the most part it was a little to heavy for my liking. At it's best (mainly the entire thing after the 7 minute mark) it fused The Mars Volta solo segments with some great rhythms, but at its worst it was just unlistenable.

W: Eric Clapton, “Layla (Unplugged)” - For some reason I've just never been that big a fan of this song. Not that it's particularly bad or anything, just hasn't ever really clicked with me. It's fine to listen to on occassions, but never anything more than that.

englishozzy: The Offspring, "Can't Get My Head Around You" - Didn't really compare to some of their more memorable stuff from the early-mid 90s. Just didn't really work for me, sounded far too much like they were trying to change their sound to appeal to a new market. Not The Offspring I know and like.

BarcaRulz: Oomph!, "Augen Auf" - Hmm, just not for me I guess, very stereotypical industrial dance rock taking influence from NIN and diluting all their qualities.

Ron Burgundy: Eminem feat Dr Dre, “Guilty Conscience” - There have been quite a few Eminem songs played during the countdown, but I am yet to hear the only song I like of his (Lose Yourself). I remember my sister playing this a lot (and very loudly) when she was younger, it was more than a little annoying.

Chienfantome: Coldplay, “Trouble” - Decent enough, if probably not their best (even from that record, which I'd probably say is Shiver). Can't complain though, definitely a very listenable song.

Not a bad round at all, highlight would definitely be Six's Smiths song, though NSpan's pick was great also.

Shrykespeare -- Edelweiss, “Bring Me Edelweiss” (1988)
WTF.

Numbersix -- Mission of Burma, “Trem 2” (1982)
Listened to it three times. The first listen didn't do much for me--but I saw a spark of something. And now it's quickly growing on me. That descending guitar riff is gonna be in my head for days.

Geezer -- Foo Fighters, "Learn to Fly"
Easily one of the better post-debut Foo tracks. And that video is hilarious.

becs -- My Chemical Romance, "Cancer”
Not bad. Seemed kinda half-baked, though. Almost as if it were the intro to something more grand and epic. I also hate when singers feel compelled to explicitly point out the "message" in their music.

undeadmonkey -- Dean Martin, "That's Amore"
Sure, it's cliche--but it's still a great song.

leestu -- The Dead Kennedys, “Holiday In Cambodia” (1980)
Hell yeah. I don't take these guys quite as seriously as some people (mostly because it sounds like Fred Schneider is on lead vocals), but they fucking rock. Good pick.

Buscemi -- Scorpions, “Still Loving You”
Love the Scorps--though this is a bit too light on the "rock" and too heavy on the "ballad"...

silversurfer -- David Bowie, “Life On Mars?”
I forget what I said before regarding this song, but I stand by it. Good choice.

transformers -- Korn, "Got The Life”
Nothing about this appeals to me. But to each his own.

W -- Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, “Ohio”
An absolute classic. Though it's lost a BIT of its impact since I first really acknowledged it (as a teenager). It's a shame that CSNY couldn't keep their shit together long enough to record more than two (and a half) great records before passing their prime.

englishozzy -- Rooster, "Deep and Meaningless"
Well, they got the title half right. ;)

BarcaRulz -- Led Zeppelin, "Immigrant Song"
fuuuuck yeah.

Chienfantome -- Portishead, “Glory Box”
You weren't around for my earlier response(s), so to recap: this is an amazing song. However...
NSpan wrote:The best part is just a sample of this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgIqCy4rvKM (Isaac Hayes - "Ike's Rap #2").

And I think the Portishead track bears a strong similarity to this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6_hzqae2tw (IMonster - "Daydream in Blue")...

Which was, in turn, stolen from this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRCpQ4EPjdA (Wallace Collection - "Daydream")

Shrykespeare -- Audioslave, “Like a Stone” (2003)
After Soundgarden broke up, I only had Chris Cornell's solo efforts to turn to. And, honestly, (despite brief sparks of genius) they just weren't doing it for me. That first Audioslave record proved that Chris Cornell still "had it." Great track.

Numbersix -- The Smiths. “I Know it’s Over” (1986)
My reason for liking the Smiths was never because their lyrics felt particularly "personal" or because I "related" to their themes--I just thought some of their songs sounded real purty. This is one of those.

becs -- The Beatles, "Hey Jude”
One of my "least" favorite Beatles tracks (that isn't to say I don't like it). And, yes, that statement provides great fodder for Geez's "snob" comment. However, I've always said that it's over-produced and overtly-anthemic (I realize that was the intention, but it goes overboard). Then, finally, the Anthology albums came out--and it provided proof (at least in MY mind) that I was right: the song IS great at its core--but only after you've peeled off the layers and layers (and layers) of studio production work. If you care to hear the "raw" version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbJ6hQULrWU

undeadmonkey -- Cobra Starship, "Living in the Sky with Diamonds"
Reminded me a bit of Zoot Woman (or Phoenix, if you prefer)--but with a hint of corporate-rock pop-sensibilities. In other words, I see potential--but I also hear some detrimental factors. Maybe I'll give it another listen.

leestu -- Beck “Loser” (1993)
Great song... but, again, I always wonder to myself "Why am I not listening to the Butthole Surfers' 'Pepper'?"

Buscemi -- Public Enemy, “Fight the Power”
Despite being so closely associated with one of my least favorite movies of all time, this song still kicks ass.

silversurfer -- The Buzzcocks, “ Orgasm Addict” (1977)
Ha! Haven't heard this in ages--thanks for that.

transformers -- Between The Buried and Me, "Disease, Injury, Madness”
I was so let-down when I got their album... The music is SO good. The vocals are just SO bad--I can't get past it.

W -- Eric Clapton, “Layla (Unplugged)”
I don't even consider this the same song as the original. As I've mentioned, Clapton gets FAR too much credit for the original (whereas most praise should go to Gordon and Allman). But, in THIS case, Clapton truly made it his own. I love it.

englishozzy -- The Offspring, "Can't Get My Head Around You"
Eh. Post-Smash Offspring isn't my bag. What amazes me is how many Offspring "fans" have never even heard Ignition.

BarcaRulz -- Oomph!, "Augen Auf"
Reminded me, in a way, of Rammstein. Hard for me to take seriously.

Chienfantome -- Coldplay, “Trouble”
As I've said, I can take Coldplay in very small doses. I wanted to kill myself by the end of their live set. That said, this song (taken on its own) is quite nice.

Not much love for Alkaline Trio it seems. I do like the band, but that is not one of the songs I dig so much. Here's one I personally like better. Some of you may agree.
