Top 100 Songs of the Millennium (2000-2019) - THE #1s

Post by Shrykespeare »

Here is the schedule for revealing your #1 songs. If you are unable to post your #1 on the day that you chose (or that you ended up with), please let me know. Tranny will then post your Top 100 in its entirety.

JUNE 1 - CHIEN
JUNE 2 - NSPAN
JUNE 3 - SIX
JUNE 4 - SURFER
JUNE 5 - RON B
JUNE 6 - LEESTU
JUNE 7 - GEEZER
JUNE 8 - SCREEN203
JUNE 9 - TRANNY
JUNE 10 - JOHNERLE
JUNE 11 - SHRYKE

Let me just say, it's been a blast, y'all. Despite your unremitting hatred for Smash Mouth and Leona Lewis and everything in between, I've welcomed every French crooner, every growly demon, every East Coast postpunk band, every pop diva, every indie garage band I've never heard of. When I proposed this list back in October, I certainly didn't think the world would have gone to shit by the time we finished, but... there we are.

I think we can all agree on one thing, if nothing else... THANK GOD FOR MUSIC.

Let's finish this thing.
Happy 60th birthday Jet Li! (4/26/23)

Okay, so it's time to launch the waltz of the number 1 songs. So here comes mine for this first day.

1.“Hurt” - Johnny Cash (2002)

A few words, first, again, to thank the grand master Shryke, for putting together this countdown. We wouldn’t have done it without him, he did his job as always, to the perfection. Merci mon ami !

Another word, to thank you all for bearing the Frenchness of my list, and the occasional Iranian rap, Argentinian duet, Chinese karaoke soundalike, and other exotic sounds. I always expected you to not necessarily like it, so that every time one of you actually appreciated one of those offerings, it was a blast.
I probably don’t look for the same thing in a song in French, in English, in Arab or in Japanese. Sounds are not the same, voices are not the same, rhythms and arrangements are not the same, and I appreciate the diversity of it all, sometimes just for the sound of a flow, sometimes for the very specific cultural ground displayed, sometimes cause it just sounds so damn good… I still have to work on my appreciation of heavy metal though, that’s sure.

So, here comes #1. I didn’t know, when we started this, which would be my #1 song. Heck, I didn’t know a couple of weeks ago I think. So in the end, it’s Johnny Cash and his heart-breaking, gut-wrenching cover of “Hurt”. I already included his fabulous cover of Sting's "I hung my head" earlier.

There’s this thing in music that is like in gastronomy. Sometimes an artist comes up with a song, and it’s good, you feel there’s something in it. Like a chef comes up with a dish, it’s a good recipe, the elements are there, it’s a good dish. But your guts tell you that something lies in this recipe that could achieve greatness in the hands of another chef.
A song is the same. And “Hurt” is like that for me. When you listen to the NIN original version, it’s a good song, the elements are there. But once Johnny Cash took it, put his voice on it, a voice that has sung for more than half a century, his hurt is not the same anymore. It’s the hurt of a long lifetime coming to an end. A hurt you hear in his voice. The recipe is the same, but he adds something to it that only years and a heart full of melancholy, of regret, of passion, of fatigue, of oldness can sing. And now it’s not just a good song anymore, it’s a monument.

Well, Chien, let me dive in and be the first to judge... I mean compliment... your list.

It's funny, you're one of two people whose music list I expected to automatically love because of a similar film taste. That didn't quite turn out to be true, resulting in a mixed bag for me. I was certainly not expecting Adele on your list, for example! And a lot of your French song didn't quite resonate, reminding me too much of a type of musical melodrama that feels a little too forced, hence my overuse of the word "maudlin". So there wasn't a huge amount of new music from your list that impressed me.

It's also clear that cinema is your true love, and a lot of your choices came from that. I didn't like La La Land or A Star is Born, so their music just reminds me of weak films. But it's very rare that I can enjoy a song from a film on its own - it reminds me way too much of the film and that's all I see, whereas I want music to inspires thoughts and images coming from myself, if that makes sense. It took me years to appreciate the likes of Link Wray and Ricky Nelson becuase I would always think of Pulp Fiction, for example. But for someone who watches more movies a day than he eats hot meals, it's clear your music choices are being true to yourself.

But there was lots of love, more than I remembered, actually. I had stopped listening to The National in the last few years and you reminded me of their (occasional) brilliance. Your Phoenix and Daft Punk songs proved that France can have cool international music. And I think you're the only one who had any Sigur Ros besides me, which is a shame. I know post-rock is passé now, but those Icelandic pixies still have tremendous power. There were some crossovers in terms of bands - like Interpol, Sufjan, the White Stripes, and Lykke Li (whose I Follow Rivers should have made my list). We only had one actual crossover - Rebellion by The Arcade Fire.

Until your #1 song. What a beautiful, powerful song. And your food metaphor is quite right - this cover is better than the original, in my humble opinion. It's a song brimming with spleen, from a man who's actual spleen was rapidly failing, along with the rest of his body. Cash had a fascinating career (he once played in my home town's pub - considered one of the oldest pubs in existence), and his last phase was magnificent in its use of poignancy. So bravo, Chien, for topping your list with a complete classic, and one of my all-time favourite songs.

Chien, mon frere, though our lists had only one song in common, there were many completely new-to-me songs that I really liked. To wit:

100.Angus & Julia Snow-Heartbreak
87.Robert Francis-Junebug
86.AaRON-Ludlow L
83.Kaleo-Way Down We Go
59.The Postal Service-Such Great Heights
50.Daft Punk-Get Lucky (feat. Pharrell Williams) - our one song in common!
48.Interpol-Rest My Chemistry
35.Arcade Fire-Everything Now
28.Juliette Armanent-A la folie
24.Eminem-Lose Yourself
13.Gary Jules & Michael Andrews-Mad World
1.Johnny Cash-Hurt

These are the songs I rated an 8/10 or better. Which honestly is a lot more than I thought there would be. You have interesting tastes, my friend, and you picked one hell of a song to top it all off.

Sometime in the next few weeks, I'm going to listen to all these great songs again.

Thanks, as always, for being the cool French guy and not the snooty, Clouseau-esque waiter type who can't pronounce "chowder" (Simpsons reference).

Great song chien. I considered it for my list as well. I think Trent Reznor said it best, - That song isn't mine anymore-

Your taste was (whatever it means) full of spleen. There was some music that didn't grab my attention at all, but i don't think i actually disliked any of your songs. And like most songs, i don't know them, so listening to 80% new stuff, often getting a nice surprise.

Highlights for me were:
# 70 Gorillaz-Feel Good Inc.
#57 Radiohead-2+2=5
#38 Daft Punk-Within
#35 Arcade Fire-Everything Now (CROSSOVER!)
#24 Eminem-Lose Yourself (XOVER!)
#10 The White Stripes-Seven Nation Army (XO!)

1. "Get Your Shit Together” - Pillowfight (2012)

Okay, I lied. I had one last Pillowfight song up my sleeve. You're shocked, I'm sure.

You guys know how I feel about this collaboration and the resulting album. So, I'll just use this space to say a big THANKS to Patrick for urging me to participate in the countdown (and for reminding me to keep sending in my picks each week)!

I had a blast hearing y'all's music selections. Lots of new-to-me tracks... and also plenty of familiar favorites. I appreciate you guys listening to my music and giving feedback--even when I was too busy to provide comments on yours. Hell, I even had an okay time when half my picks were dismissed as "pedestrian" and "forgettable" :P

So, with that said, please endure four more minutes of.... PILLOWFIGHT

EDIT: listen to it loud...and check out that sick Zelda sample!

Chien - Fantastic number 1 that I would have liked to squeeze into my own list. It looked like we weren't going to have any songs in common, but then we reached the top 10 and got one with Seven Nation Army. I found your list had a lot of atmospheric and cinematic music, and a mellow emotional vibe over all, but there were a few fun feel good songs too, like Gorillaz, Daft Punk, and the like. I enjoyed getting a taste of the music from some French artists I'd never heard of, even if I didn't like all of them. The most pleasing surprise for me, and quite unexpected, was the couple of Angus and Julia Stone picks. They really are a couple of talented artists with many great songs throughout their careers. Good to see some Mercury Rev (I re-listened to that great album because of that selection) and The National.

Chien: Our tastes may be more opposite than anyone else that was involved in this countdown. The French ballads, somber indie stuff (excluding Interpol and non-Everything Now Arcade Fire) and miscellaneous popular songs from a variety of genres ("Liztomania", "Lose Yourself", "Get Lucky") inspired a lot of shoulder shrugs and feelings of tedium from me. That being said, there was some very nice surprises along that genuinely caught me off guard ("Seven Nation Army", Lykki Li, "Black Eyes" from A Star is Born) and you closed things out on a great note with one of the greatest covers of all time.

Top Song: "Seven Nation Army"-The White Stripes"
Top Discovery: None
Top Re-Discovery: "Aerodynamic"-Daft Punk
Other Standouts: "Black Eyes"-Bradley Cooper, "Back to Black"-Amy Winehouse, "Hurt"-Johnny Cash, "Rebellion" (Lies)-Arcade Fire
