Well, young Screen, I would say your list was the one I liked the least - I just gave Shryke more stick because he knows I don't quite mean it ;)

But that's to be expected. Being a teen in the 90s meant that guitar rock and indie was the only thing acceptable to like. Even considering pop as anything other than poison would be a crime to humanity. So I've been conditioned to look down on it. Ironically, it was indie-darlings Pitchfork magazine that made me open to the idea that pop music can at least be regarded with the same intellectual vigor as guitar music.

The point is that I have a bias against pop music, so a lot of your stuff didn't work for me. And the limited pop that I do respect didn't quite feature in your list. How come no Beyonce, for example? And you didn't choose Rihanna's most obvious, and often best, hits.

Still, I tried to give your muisc a chance, and I'm at the very least glad to have learned more about acts I've heard about but never bothered to listen to. And indeed it took a bunch of times to finally listen to, and appreciate, the hugely popular Disclosure. I have to confess I listened to Latch more than once. What I also liked about your list was the capacity to completely surprise. Such as Chelsea Wolfe, who is great, even her new album under the catchy name of Mrs Piss. You should give PJ Harvey a listen, particularly her 90s output, as Wolfe is a vocal fan of hers. There were a few other positive surprises, such as MIA, Arctic Monkeys, Timbaland, and M83, all of which were decent tunes. And we actually had one crossover, Modest Mouse's "Float On"!

I'll never get Lady Gaga, but at least you picked one of her songs that's genuinely catchy, so I'll take that as a positive. Otherwise, thanks for the pop education!

Tranny: Lord Of The Underworld, Defiler Of Virgins, and Masochist Of Massachusetts – What more can I say about shouty demons, machine gun kick drums, and hip-hop? I think you know my feelings by now. Throw in the occasional Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey and your list mostly didn't work for me. I suffered through what I see as the metal cliches in your #1, and then some nice proggy metal showed up at around the 5:00 mark, but it wasn't enough to make me want to plow through that earlier section again. As for the rest, I dug some of the more retro, proggy metal like Protest The Hero and System Of A Down, and on the non-metal side, Death Grips was really interesting and unconventional hip-hop, and my favourite Frank Ocean song showed up, so there is that. Celebrate the conclusion of your countdown by sacrificing a bottle of Sam Adams to your heathen gods while meeting with your coven over Zoom, or whatever you satanists do during lockdown. ;)

Top Discovery: Lucero in general (I know they appeared on your past list, but I'd had completely forgotten about them and was in a hardo phase where I completely hated anything that was even remotely country 10 years ago).
Come see them the next time they come around (which won't be too long, they are on tour pretty much constantly) and the first round is on me.

Tranny, you maniac,

Perhaps I'm the one who enjoyed your list the most (or else Leetsu who can bang that head of his). Not for the screamy metal, which isn't painful for me, it's just I tune out entirely. I actually preferred them to the likes of Arian Grande, Lana Del Ray, or Linkin Park. Your #1 fit into the type of song I didn't like. Again, I appreciate the band's attempt to throw in a lot of genres into the mix, but considering I don't like any of those genres seperates pretty much guarantees I'm not going like a 7-minute sonic smorgasbord of them.

But anything that wasn't demonic tantrums was actually really good. Your taste in hip-hop is excellent, and it's something that I've only developed in the last decade or so. But I am a fan of Kendrick, Run the Jewels (and I agree with Leetsu - they're new album is excellent), Danny Brown, and yes even Kanye who can be great when he's not talking nonsense and donning MAGA caps. Great to see I'm not the only fan of FKA Twigs here, and there were some fine tunes from Queens of the Stone Age, The Weeknd, and The White Stripes. We had 2 crossovers, Kanye's Black Skinhead and Frank Ocean's epic Pyramids. That's 2 more than I was expecting!

And most of the stuff I didn't know was great too. I've actually just bought The Money Store by Death Grips and I'm really enjoying it. And I'll probably go back through your list to remind myself of other good hip-hop to explore.

So don't listen to the haters. Except for the metal stuff!

#1 - Steve Earle – Transcendental Blues (2000)

I think you all knew it would be Steve Earle, the only question was which song and what genre would it be?

In my comments I've focused a lot on Steve Earle's lyrics, which are second to none, but my #1 pick is all about the music. It's not that there's anything wrong with the lyrics, but with this song it's the music that grabs me every single time. The intro creates a sense of anticipation because I know what's coming, and it builds to that point where the drums and bass kick in, and then I'm hooked, playing air bass or air drums or whatever air instrument is handy. Then, before I know it, it's all over and I listen to it again. The second time through I usually focus more on the guitars and the droning sound effects, then the third time I usually focus on the lyrics. The fourth time around I'm back to the drums and bass and then I'm usually satisfied enough to move on to the rest of the album, which is pretty goddamn brilliant, but then, at the end, I often go back and give this song one (or more) encores. Every time I listen to it something happens to me that's, well... transcendental.

I may not have converted you all into Steve Earle fans, but if nothing else I hope I've given you a taste of his versatility, and disproved any misguided notions that he's just a county singer.

Also: Everyone's In Love With You, Halo 'Round The Moon

And for anyone who's interested, here's a live version from Conan that gives it more of a Pixies/Sonic Youth vibe.

Geezer:

More than most of this group, your tastes and mine overlap. I am not into live shows as much as I used to be, but I love your passion for it. And while I'm not an aficionade of most of your favorite groups, there were many songs that had me reaching for the volume control (to turn up) rather than the stop button. We had only one crossover, but I found myself looking forward to your picks on a daily basis. You're a cool dude, and I hope we get to meet someday, if only so you can take this old man someplace cool for once in his bleached-white life.

97. Foo Fighters, Times Like These
84. Lucero, Tears Don't Matter Much
77. Jimmy Eat World, My Sundown
67. Social Distortion, Don't Take Me For Granted
57. Matt and Kim, Daylight
54. Audioslave, Like a Stone (our one crossover)
48. SOAD, Deer Dance
34. Against Me!, True Trans Soul Rebel
31. Flogging Molly, Drunken Lullabies
24. Frank Turner, Recovery
15. Against Me!, Because of the Shame
10. Airborne Toxic Event, Sometime Around Midnight
9. Jimmy Eat World, Hear You Me
3. The Gaslight Anthem, The 59 Sound
2. Against Me!, Black Me Out

As to your #1, it's a good song for the same reasons most of yours are. 'Nuff said.

Screen:

I think I enjoyed your list more than anyone's (after Ron B). Though we only had one crossover, we share a love for several pop divas, and you introduced me to a bunch of new songs that I absolutely adored. "Help Me Lose My Mind" might just be on my Top 100 right now if we were to start this whole thing over again, it's THAT FUCKING GOOD. Though I am nearly triple your age, I truly admire that you've already embraced your feminine side - it took me a lot longer to do that. Thank you so much for teaching us old fucks a thing or two. :)

The best of your list:

90. Bear Hands, 2AM
85. Bleachers, Don't Take the Money
74. Disturbed, Parasite
66. fun. feat. Janelle Monae, We Are Young (our only crossover)
65. Disclosure feat. London Grammer, Help Me Lose My Mine
55. M83, Midnight City
32. Ingrid Michaelson, Girls Chase Boys
23. Alanis Morissette, Hands Clean
22. Sia, Chandelier
18. Big Data feat. Joywave, Dangerous
13. Timbaland, The Way I Are
8. Alanis Morissette, Precious Illusions

Poker Face. I had a scintilla of an inkling this would be on your list somewhere. It's a much better song than most of Gaga's pop anthems, and it was my first introduction to her. True story - I heard "Poker Face" for the very first time... while playing poker. No shit. I've loved it ever since, and I even dickered with the idea of having it on my own list. It's a great #1 song. Period.

Tranny:

Don't be offended when I say your overall list was my least favorite of everyone's. I love heavy metal and even a bit of screaming doesn't offend me, but so much of your faves just grate on my ancient ears. The guitars in most of those songs redeemed them considerably, but unlike you, I like lyrics that are intelligible. Still, you did surprise me on several occasions. I never thought, when this thing started, I would have more crossovers with Chien than with you, but there we are. You're still a great guy. :D

My faves of yours:

99. Animals as Leaders, Another Year
98. Lorde, Buzzcut Season
50. OutKast, Ms. Jackson
44. Coheed & Cambria, The Crowing
6. SOAD, Deer Dance

I did like your #1 song once we got past the screamy parts, but there wasn't enough there for me to revisit it.

JohnErle:

Your list was truly a mixed bag. On some days I loved your utterly unpredictable picks, while with others I just found myself watching the seconds tick away on the videos until they ended. The fact that four of my faves of yours are all Shearwater songs tells me I need to seriously start exploring this group's discography. Love that you had some XTC and Dandy W's, which broke up the often monotonous stretches.

My faves of yours:

97. Dandy Warhols, Bohemian (Like You)
89. Seafood, Signal Sparks
69. Wolfmother, White Unicorn
68. Lightning Dust, Diamond
60. XTC, The Man Who Murdered Love
47. Shearwater, You as You Were
37. Shearwater, Black Eyes
28. Shearwater, Rooks
27. Great Lake Swimmers, The Talking Wind
16. LCD Soundsystem, Someone Great
12. Jason Isbell, Songs That She Sang in the Shower
5. Shearwater, Castaways

I'm not a Steve Earle fan, but given how much I know you love him, it doesn't surprise me that Transcendental Blues is your #1. I think it's his best song, and I would argue it's one of his most radio-friendly. What a dichotomy!

Geezer, the opposite. The others here described your list fairly well and you know its no surprise i didn't love it to bits. However, i do love how you stick to your guns, be honest with your choices and the obvious passion for live music that includes guitars. I made a pact to listen to every song fully for this countdown, i made it to 50 then tailed off like a headless chook. So i did hear at least 50% of your music even if i didn't like it- and im now a Jimmy Eat World fan, they're good and i think i had a chance to see em live but didnt know who they were at the time.

Highlights for me:
#6 Waiting – Green Day
#13 Stay Together For The Kids – Blink-182
#48 Deer Dance – System Of A Down
#50 Mr. Brightside – The Killers
#61 Toxicity – System Of A Down
#89 Wake Up – Arcade Fire

Thanks for being apart of this count geezer, i think i got to know you a lot better in the event :)

Tranny, you dirty dawg. Seems like you got your plate with 3 steaks worth of meat/metal, you got some juicy veggies/rap-hip hop to keep you healthy and then your sprinkle your lovely steak and vegs plate with glitter and sugar instead of salt n pepper?! What is going on? But hey, you know way more more music than me and i love it how you keep finding these artists that keep you happy (or insane? im not sure ;) ) Im sure to go back to your top 50 to uncover some sick rap gems and hopefully a couple of artists one of my best friends (big heavy metal fan) may not have heard of.

Highlights for me were:
#97 ScHoolboy Q-Collard Greens (feat. Kendrick Lamar)
#83 Run the Jewels-Oh My Darling Don't Cry
#77 Linkin Park-Papercut
#70 Queens of the Stone Age-Go with the Flow
#50 Outkast-Ms. Jackson XO!
#6 System of a Down-Deer Dance

Big thanks for joining the count Tranny, we really did need someone to get that full spectrum of music- and you covered a good 20% there :)

j (steve) erle. Your list was the right that fell in between for me. Plenty of stuff i didn't mind, in fact pretty much all stuff i didn't mind but there was very little that i really struck a chord with you. I was so close to having Maps on my top, if so, maybe it would have been the no. 2 most popular choice. I did like hearing Cold War Kids and Santigold again- so i think i need to listen to your top 50 ala geez when the count is said and done, i will still comment.

Highlights:
#97 The Dandy Warhols-Bohemian Like You (aka Hipster Like You)
#91 The Cut Copy-Need You Now
#85 Cold War Kids-Something is Not Right with Me
#77 Santigold-L.E.S. Artistes
#61 Bat for Lashes-What's a Girl to Do?
#36 Yeah Yeah Yeahs-Maps

Thanks man, was glad to have you in this thing :D
