John John John...

No surprises that Steve Earle would be your #1. It was a nice song, with a hint of alt rock in the guitars. You also perfectly describe how I respond to my favourite songs, listening back to different elements each time, savouring every aspect. Anyway, your list achieved what you wanted. While maybe 10 years ago, when we did our all-time favourite songs, Steve Earle seemed dusty and dull to me, now that I'm dusty and dull I've opened up to Earle and, through your picks, can appreciate an artist who can stretch himself and flirt with different styles and genres. I probably won't actively listen to him, but I definitely respect him.

I think it was Geez who said your list was the most diverse, and he's right. You kept throwing curveballs. Sure, a lot of your songs leant towards country (or folk or Americana or whatever you want to call it), some of which felt a bit predictable for a genre I know a tiny amount of. But then you'd surprise with a Pitchfork-approved indie darling, or a Lily Allen pop song, or a William Shatner comedy cover. Or the quirky musical theatrics of Sparks, who I have to say really impressed me with their completely insular and pure sound, making me crave to see Carax's Annette.

From the stuff I knew I loved your tracks by Bloc Party, LCD Soudnsystem, TV on the Radio (with a very unexpected choice), Bat for Lashes, Vampire Weekend, and Sanitgold (whose LES Artists just missed my list). That Belle and Sebastian song was surprisingly brilliant. And of course our two crossovers, Arcade Fire's Rebellion and Yeah Yeah Yeahs Maps. There were a few bands I plan to listen to more, particularly Iron and Wine. There was another one as well, but I've forgotten which one, so I'll go back and check.

But yeah, a great, surprising list for of unexpected twists and turns. The Hitchcock film of our Top 100.

While I'm glad to hear about your newfound respect for Steve Earle, I feel the need to point out that he doesn't merely flirt with different genres. He flirts with them, takes them out to dinner, makes them call him Daddy, then leaves them for the next genre that catches his eye. ;-)

Let me know when you remember which other band you plan to check out more.

OK. Time to bring this puppy to an end.

Thanks for your indulgence vis-a-vis my selections. Starting with Smash Mouth, for which I got ten tons of ridicule, and continuing with any number of bands that reached their peak of stardom three-odd decades ago (PSB, Erasure, Level 42, UB40), and including such ridicule-worthy acts as matchbox twenty, Disturbed, Barenaked Ladies, Sean Paul, Korn, and Nickelback (FUCKING NICKELBACK!), I would like to think that I've surprised you with some of my picks. My Mystery Round picks were guessed correctly less than half the time, which made me smile that my tastes aren't always as passe and predictable as I led you to believe.

I like radio hits. So there. Maybe that's a good thing in that I'm more in tune now with what's "hot" (please note, I said "hot" and not "good") than I was a year ago; maybe it's a bad thing because there's obviously so much amazing music that I will just never be exposed to; maybe it's just a thing, because who has time in today's crazy world to listen to EVERYTHING? That being said, even if all my picks ended up being universally hated, I still felt comfortable sharing them with y'all, because this group is awesome. Y'all dished it out, and I dished some of it back. Like guys who are good friends do.

Now, on to my #1.

Muse, Madness (2012)

Whether you love the cliche of the "glory note" or not, you have to admit, when someone pulls it off, it's fucking impressive. Matt Bellamy has the vocal chops to pull it off. In an interview, he said this song started as "a personal reflection after a fight with his girlfriend Kate Hudson, and how, after she had gone to her mother's house, he began to realise "yeah, she was right, wasn't she?" Anyone who's ever been in love knows how crazy it can be sometimes. When I heard this song for the very first time, I was hooked. That vocal climax he hits at the end just reaches down into the depths of my soul and yanks out every memory I've ever had about how it felt to be heartbroken, lonely, miserable. "I need to love" isn't just a trope, it's a fact, especially in this world when there's not enough of it and too much of the opposite. It's a beautiful, brilliant song, and I'm proud to say that it is, IMHO, the best song of the last 20 years.

So there we are. Four-plus months, over a thousand different songs, and more snark than an arm wrestling match between Dennis Miller and John Oliver. It's been a hoot, guys.

(snicker) Pumpking Smashkins... Damn, that's funny...

Screen, the teen sensation. What have i got to say about your list? There were plenty of dancefloor favorites and your No. 1 is no surprise, i really should have made a bet Poker Face would be your no. 1. Overall theres very few songs id want to turn off from your list, and many i like to turn right up, esp our 3 crossovers. Great to see that Florence song make it, its the only one i like from them but it was so massive when it hit the scene. Also nice seeing some A Perfect Circle.

Highlights for me:
#87 La Roux-Uptight Downtown
#55 M83-Midnight City XO!
#52 A Perfect Circle-The Outsider
#50 Modest Mouse-Float On XO!
#44 Arctic Monkeys-Do I Wanna Know?
#29 Florence + the Machine-Dogs Days Are Over
#22 Sia-Chandalier XO!
#14 M.I.A.-Paper Planes

Thanks for joining us, our newest member to the fantaverse, now, how do we get your friends on here? ;)

Shryke, the Panzer. You had so many good songs, and while we had many crossovers, you just had to throw in those songs which we will not utter here again. But theres one thing for sure, if I was at your Hollywood party, I would still really enjoy your playlist. On the days where six, geez or surf would put on some gloomy shit, there would be something uplifting stuff from you which I appreciated.

Shryke – Your “end this puppy” line made me think of that classic National Lampoon magazine cover, and what's all this about glory holes? (adjusts glasses) Oh, never mind.

You saved the nearly best for last because your #1 pick was quite good. Wikipedia tells me it was a big hit, but I could swear I'd never heard it before because the previous Muse album was the last one I paid attention to, and I haven't been listening to the radio or following the charts in decades. It was quite accessible in its composition, but the production didn't have the same radio-friendly pop sheen that kept me at a distance from a lot of your picks. There was a fair amount of variety of genres in your picks, but that glossy polish kept showing up and it largely doesn't work for me. It was great to hear When You're Falling again, Time To Pretend is a stone-cold classic that just missed my list, and your Joe Satriani picks were disappointingly appealing, but at least I got to mention in passing my thoughts on the Joe Satriani stuff you didn't post. I'm glad my snark made a lasting impression on you even if my songs often didn't.

Oh Shryke, our Captain,

Yeah, I gave you a good ribbing, but only because you can handle it. Like Screen's list, there's a lot of stuff here that just didn't do much for me. It was like water off a duck's back as they say. There were a few I genuinely dislike, like Matchbox 20, Smash Mouth who became Disturbed who became Nickelback who became Korn as the figurehead in my temple of disgust. But there was some okay stuff like the inoffensive Pet Shop Boys and Erasure, and some stuff I did like, such as Hey Ya, In Da Club, Get Lucky, and your Gorillaz songs. You still enjoy 80s acts who have seen better days, but I was pleasantly surprised to realise that Depeche Mode still have some gas left in the tank. And as much as I dislike Muse, you actually picked songs from them, including your #1, that didn't commit their usual sins, so I appreciated that.

I am impressed that you still engage with music and still actively check out what's popular at the moment. A lot of folks shut their ears to the present, and there's something a little sadenning about that, so I'm glad to see you still have that youthful curiosity. But mostly I wanted to thank you again for hosting this, posting almost daily, setting up those fun mystery rounds, and prodding us endlessly to get our lists in on time. When this started the world was a different place, and listening to everyone's songs and reading their thoughts on each one throughout lockdown made it way more fun than it should have been. And it's all thanks to you.

Thanks everyone else for participating and keeping up with the songs and the snark. It's the first time we've all engaged since last year's draft, I think, and it was great to discover some new stuff. And to realise that I shared 21 of my songs across 6 of you, including 2 of your #1s, gave me all sorts of fuzzy feelings.

Now, time to start thinking about our next list...

Let me know what you think our "next list" should be, Six. Unless it's albums, I'm probably down.

Since I don't know if I'm going to survive the next ten years (knock on wood) before I suggest something this huge, long, and wide-sweeping again, I think I would very much like to do a yearly countdown, featuring music released over a minuscule twelve-month period. I'll be hitting up everyone when the calendar turns to 2021. It won't be a Top 100 (sorry leestu), but maybe a Top 25, 40, or 50 might be in order, depending on what y'all think.

This will, at the very least, keep me motivated to fucking keep up with today's tunes instead of falling twenty years out of touch again. :)

It's been a pleasure.

John: Way to pull the ol' Shyamalan twist on us with Steve Earle at #1 ;) In all seriousness, this was a pretty good track (particularly the rock-tinged guitars) that was definitely my 2nd favorite of his that you've shared behind "Burnin' It Down".

Our differences in tastes were well-documented throughout this countdown, so unsurprisingly there wasn't a ton for me to enjoy here. I've had a deep-rooted disdain for acts like The Decemberists, Fleet Foxes and Iron & Wine for years now and your selections didn't weaken that in the slightest (in fact in the case of The Decemberists, that 9-hour sea shanty may have intensified it). Some of the stuff that was new to equally unpleasant-particularly the stuff from My Morning Jacket, Beirut and "Suburban Homeboy" by Sparks-which conjured up a particularly unique mix of confusion and repulsion within me. Of course with a list as dynamic that was dynamic as yours, there was still some strong highlights in between the jeers. Jason Isbell and Earle operate in the portion of the Americana/Country spectrum I can appreciate while the White Stripes/Bloc Party/Vampire Weekend/Black Rebel Motorcycle Club/Arcade Fire picks were all quite good.

Lastly, I have to say your commentary on my picks was consistently hilarious and I think I'll start going by "The Masochist of Massachusetts" the next time my coven convenes for a séance.

Top Track: "M79"-Vampire Weekend
Top Discovery: "Berlin"-Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Top Re-Discovery: "M79"-Vampire Weekend
Other Standouts: "Rebellion (Lies)"-Arcade Fire. "Burnin' It Down"-Steve Earle, "This Modern Love"-Bloc Party, "We Are Going to Be Friends"-The White Stripes, "Speed Trap Town"-Jason Isbell, "Your Hand in Mine"-Explosions in the Sky

Shryke: Let's start off with Madness shall we? This was actually the exact moment where Muse lost me. The switch to a synth-driven sound stripped them of their unique identity as a chaotic, theatrical rock group and just turned them into a boring, insufferably corny electropop group. It's not quite as bad as I remember being, but it's still pretty damn dull.

Most of the usual suspects for criticism with your list weren't among mine. Matchbox 20 is completely fine at what do, Smash Mouth is harmless pop rock, Nickelback isn't nearly as bad as their reputation and the nu-metal shit, particularly Korn and "Feuer Frei", are nostalgic cuts from my early years as a heavy music fan that I largely still enjoy today.

The overwhelming majority of the negative feelings I had towards can be tied to just a handful of the popular tracks you've selected. "Fireflies", "We Are Young", "Cake by the Ocean", "Somewhere Only We Know", "On Top of the World" and "Chasing Cars" all fall into the unfortunate category of songs where the mere mention of the title makes me recoil in disgust. If there is a hell, these revolting, unbelievably obnoxious tracks would be on the playlist in my quarters.

Moving on from the undeserved cruelty portion of this wrap-up, there were a fair number of your picks, both pop hits and not, that were excellent. "Misery Business" may be the top standout of Paramore's early years as a pop punk band, "Hella Good" is a stupid catchy track with an absurdly good bass/synth groove, "Hysteria" is a perfect representation of the era of Muse that I love so dearly, "I Am the Highway" is a powerful song that was easily the finest moment from Audioslave's brief tenure and "Make Me Bad" happens to be my 2nd favorite song by the aforementioned Korn. It was also nice to hear more from the iconic shredder Joe Satriani-who has a had huge influence on some of the metal guitarists I admire the most and be reminded of a few enjoyably goofy songs from my early teenage years ("Get Busy", "Fire Burning", "In Da Club").

Above all, pal I have to commend you for not the only dedication to not only running this show, but to prepare your own list. Sifting through years upon years you weren't familiar with is a brutally taxing chore that requires a tremendous amount of effort and you deserve kudos for going to those lengths to ensure your list was as expansive as possible.

Top Track: "Make Me Bad"-Korn
Top Discovery: "Sleep Walk"-Joe Satriani
Top Re-Discovery: "I Am the Highway"-Audioslave
Other standouts: "Hysteria"-Muse, "Here to Stay"-Korn, "Feuer Friei"-Rammstein, "Misery Business"-Paramore, "Hella Good"-No Doubt, "Stupify'-Disturbed, "In Da Club"-50 Cent
