Thanks for the response surfer, very much appreiciated, and knowing my top songs are playing at your workplace is kind of insane but what a revelation! Then again, so are sixs...Also to geez, yep, I shot myself in the foot there, I assumed you would switch your #100 song with this one, didn't take notice of the song name

Chien, Son Lux, Easy
I've heard this one before, but not for a while. Its decent. Its Easy. FL
5.5/10

jErle, Explosions in the Sky, Your Hand in Mine
It needs the right mood for me, on one day I might really like this, on another I might hate it. Tough one. FL
4.5/10

Geezer, The Menzingers, Rivalries
Just hope you don't pull an NSPAN and make this band your next 5 songs. Not my style. FL
1.5/10

Leestu, Sweet Trip, Chocolate Matter
Im slowly finding that I know far less about music than most of you. Clearly you know more stuff, gladly, I didn't miss anything....this time. Its got an original sound, but I don't think its that good. FL2
4/10

NSPAN, Pillowfight, You're so Pretty
Nice. FL2
5.5/10

Screen, Chelsea Wolfe, Iron Moon
Not nice. FL
3/10

Shyrke, Kelly Clarkson, Behind those Hazel Eyes
Theres a great mix of taste in our group, some like you value the sound or production more, other prefer the lyrics. I like another song by Kelly, but not this one so much.
4/10

Six, Peaches, Lovertits
I know Peaches, but def not this sound. And crap, am I flabbergasted or what? This song was great! nice pick six. FL3
7.5/10

Surfer, Snail Mail, Pristine
The sound, the hooks, riffs, get me more than the lyrics or the voice (I think could do better). That said, like many artists, I don't care for their age, and most times their lyrics. So we got some different values but I am understanding your taste a bit better now. FL2
4/10

Tranny, Perphery, Have a Blast
Always a change of pace. Esp after six + surfer. But, I didn't like this one. Too crushing but the solo was nice. FL
4.5/10

Shryke, the vocals do get a bit more refined in their later records. Ron, I would never do that, I'm not some kind of monster. Their 10 songs will be pretty well distributed, to the best of my ability.

Lots of surprises for 94

Chien, this was sultry. I like it.
John, beautiful song. I love early Explosions. Something from them hitting my list later on
Geez, I thought they sounded a bit samey, but didn't offend me
Leetsu, it was okay, but not as distinct as your description
Nspan, listening to that made me think I was in 1996
Ron, didn't register with me
Screen, woah, this is a major departure. I like Chelsea Wolfe. Hung out with her once. The day Lou Reed died, actually. This is a great song.
Shryke, that kind of pop isn't for me. She worth it just for the reference in The 40 Year Old Virgin.
Surf, I love Snail Mail. She perfectly captures the longing you feel as a lovesick teen. I prefer a few other songs on that record, but this is still great. Reminds me of Red house Painters in some ways.
Tranny, that was too much for me!

Chien - not your best work, I'm afraid.
John - It works much better for me as the theme song to the brilliant Friday Night Lights, because after about a minute I was very bored.
Leestu - Honestly, this sounded to me like when I accidentally have two different songs playing through different means (like a youtube video and spotify, for example) at the same time.
NSpan - I'm still hopeful that something you like will agree with my ears. Sadly, this was not it.
Ron - not only did I finish this, I enjoyed it a lot! Very upbeat, catchy, danceable. This is something I have a very real chance of revisiting. Fuck yeah, Ron!
Screen - 40 seconds was all I could handle today.
Shryke - Heard it many times before, and its a perfectly pleasant pop song. Kelly's always had the pipes and this is one of her better songs. Its not something I would actively listen to, but its not something that has me reaching for the skip button either. Which makes it one of the better picks of the round.
Six - I swear sometime in this list I'm going to finish one of your songs. Today, I made it just a little over a minute through this cringe-worthy number, but I'm hoping for better tomorrow!
Surfer - This was great. It reminds me very much of one of my favorite artists, Anika Pyle, singer of Katie Ellen (who had a couple songs narrowly miss my list) and Chumped (who have a couple that DID make it.) The Katie Ellen stuff is especially reminiscent of this, to me. Check them out.
Tranny - the music sounds like something out of an old video game. A really angry old video game.

I honestly thought I had one of the videos going from Shryke's post and your spotify list going at the same time somehow

Really good round today.

The Excellent

Snail Mail, Pristine - this made my favourite songs of 2018 list and her album made my favourite albums of the year chart...great voice and great song writing...although the lyrics themselves are a bit of a weak point

The Great

Chelsea Wolfe, Iron Moon - great choice Screen...Carrion Flowers is my favourite from this album...but the whole album is really good

The Very Good

Son Lux, Easy - first listen...weird song and weird video...I like weird

Explosions In The Sky, Your Hand In Mine...first listen I think...I know I haven't heard this album...I like when I can lose myself in a song...this did that

Pillowfight, You're So Pretty - first listen...nice chilled funky soulful vibe

The Good

The Menzingers, Rivalries - first listen...I like his rough voice...good music too

Peaches, Lovertits - Peaches was definitely something a bit different at the time...I love her duet with Iggy Pop, and there's a couple of others of hers I like more than this too

Periphery, Have a Blast - first listen...I never used to like prog rock but I'm developing a bit of taste for it in my later years...more so when it's an influence on other genres like the prog metal here...keeps me on my toes listening to the song

Bluejuice, I'll Go Crazy - Bluejuice were a fun band...I luckily got to see them live just before they quit...but I do think this is one of their weaker songs...Broken Leg, and Vitriol are my favourites of theirs

The Rest

Kelly Clarkson, Behind Those Hazel Eyes - first listen (or I've wiped it from my memory if it's not)...I try to avoid songs like this, but that's just my personal taste of the commercial pop genre, not a criticism of the song itself...but yeah I didn't enjoy this at all

CHIEN

Marc Lavoine / Souad Massi, Paris (2001)

I almost cheat with this one, as Marc Lavoine recorded the song “Paris” in the early 90’s, but this duet cover version was made for a duets album he recorded in 2001. “Paris” is a declaration of love to the city of Paris. Here Souad massi brings oriental sounds to it and actually elevates the song. “I walk your streets that walk on my feet, I drink in your cafés, wander in your subway, your sidewalks love me too much…”

JOHNERLE

Wilco, A Ghost is Born (2004)

The last track on the dull and pretentious A Ghost Is Born, this was the last time Wilco sounded even remotely like the band I loved in the 90s.

GEEZER

Lucero, Mom (2009)

Ok, let's slow it down a bit. This song is really freaking special to me. I made my mom a photo album of old pictures of me and my brothers with the lyrics throughout the pages. I danced with my mom to it at my wedding (and they are also responsible for my first dance with my wife 'Hey Darlin do You Gamble' which fell just short of this list). I've seen this band ten times and they keep getting better. I hope you like it, because there's a lot more to come.

LEESTU

Faker, Sleepwalking (2008)

An underrated Australian indie rock/pop rock band that will make another appearance later. They just write quality, catchy, sing along songs, and I like the sound of his voice. This is the third single from their second album Be The Twilight (2007) and is easily my favourite from this album.

NSPAN

Band of Skulls. Hollywood Bowl (2006)

Probably the best post-White Stripes band of that genre. Garage rock at its finest.

RON B

Tame Impala, Let it Happen (2015)

A band from my home state, kinda my home city. Actually, it’s not a band, it’s just one dude. Yeah, this dude’s got skills. I remember giving my brother the album this song is from, and his comment was “It’s too dreamy.” Shit mate, this is beyond that. The lyrics spoke to me and this song hit its mark. I love the electro pop sound, doubled down by punchy drum beats.

SCREEN203

Kylie Minogue, Can't Get You Out Of My Head (2001)

And you thought Smash Mouth was rough...

Let me get out of the way that I love 2000s-early 2010s pop music. The blending of dance music into pop was arguably one of the best trends in music in recent memory, and this is one of the best examples. Shame to see that Minogue never did anything that broke out in the US after this.

SHRYKE

Collective Soul, Why Pt. 2 (2000)

I spent a lot of the 90s loving Collective Soul. They were the first band I ever took my wife to see in concert (the first American band she'd ever seen live), and Dosage remains to this day one of my favorite albums ever. Ed Roland’s voice has just enough of an edge to make him memorable to be, and though they petered out in the aughts, two of their songs were good enough to make my list.

SIX

Songs: Ohia, Blue Factory Flame (2002)

Poor Jason Molina. Across the late 90s and early 00s he was one of the best musicians in the alt-country world, not to mention pretty damn prolific. His solemn songs were often about his battle with depression. This track closes his last album using that name, before he shifted to Magnolia Electric Co and tried to sound more upbeat. It sadly didn’t work and he succumbed to alcoholism, dying before he hit 40. For me, I’ll always appreciate the way his music portrayed that conflict between hopeful and hopelessness, and how songs like Blue Factory Flame helped a lot of folk out by making them feel understood.

SURFER

The Murder Capital, Don't Cling To Life (2019)

While Fontaines DC became the media darlings for the Irish music scene last year, The Murder Capital, for me, blew their debut record out of the water with a collection of songs which hit a more personal button, while at the same time packed with hit after hit of exhilarating riffs and powerful slow burners. This song was the point in the record where everything came together. Following on from the emotionally bruising "On Twisted Ground" and "Feeling Fades," this acts like a cathartic release for the band, capturing them at their most effective. As the chorus hits home, you feel every glimmer of emotion in the band, and feel a need to embrace them. There is still plenty to come from these guys, but until then this is a fantastic point to start.

TRANSFORMERS

Coheed and Cambria, The Dark Sentencer (2018)

This represented the first time I felt prog rockers Coheed and Cambria showcased the peak of their musical powers since the mid 2000's. While they'd made plenty of great tracks since then, "The Dark Sentencer" possessed the epic scope, over-the-top corny atmosphere and addictiveness that made their first few records masterpieces.

Chien - you cheat! Disqualified!
John - I actually think Ghost is their best album. Great song.
Geez- Sweet, but I won't remember it
Leetsu - a little disappointing considering your good taste! Vocals had an 80s feel to them
Nspan - it was nice, but it didn't feel memorbale
Ron B - Sometimes I really find them boring, but this song is preety good at times
Screen - Way better than Smash Mouth! At least this has good pop sensibilities and vocals!
Shryke - I'm generally not into soft rock
Surf - this is a surprise! But a great track from a promising album.
Tranny - a tad too proggy for me.

Chien - Paris - Maybe it's very American of me, but I somehow pictured the male part of the song being sung by Pepe Le Pew. Which made me laugh. Otherwise, I got nothing out of it. It sounded like something you'd get while dining in a French cafe.. background music. 5/10

JohnErle - A Ghost is Born - Never been a fan of Wilco. This was just okay for me. 5.5/10

Geezer - Mom - Pleasant song. Loved the story behind it. Doubt I'll remember a note of it tomorrow. 5/10

Leestu - Sleepwalking - This was very catchy, and I loved the retro vibe. Reminded me of 80's bands like The Fixx and Icehouse, and the lead singer's voice bears more than a passing resemblance to Robert Smith's. Great choice. 7/10

NSpan - Hollywood Bowl - This didn't feel like garage rock to me. Had a few good moments, but that's it. 5.5/10

Ron B - Let It Happen - I like Tame Impala. They have an ethereal quality that quite appeals to me. This song is a good example. Definitely my fave of the round. 8/10

Screen203 - Enough with the Smash Mouth bashing! I've heard this before, of course. I quite like it. Very catchy and rhythmic. It's really refreshing to see a teenager such as yourself with such a predilection for female singers (who are all HAWT, don't get me wrong). ;) 7.5/10

Six - Blue Factory Flame - Not too bad. For some reason it reminded me of the more sedate parts of STP's "Big Empty." Don't like his voice as much as Weiland's, though. Just okay for me. 6/10

Surfer - Don't Cling To Life - There's a lot to like in this, and if this is typical of their sound, then I'm going to have to look into them. Excellent. 7/10

Transformers - The Dark Sentencer - I listened to a few C&C songs during my recent blitz. This is one of the better ones. 6.5/10

I'm back from vacation and slowly catching up on the tunes thanks to the Spotify playlists. I'm up to round 96 and so far there's one song that will appear later on my list and a few bands that will have different songs appear.

So far none of the stuff that's new to me has blown me away, but if anything does you'll hear about it. We've got a long way to go on this countdown and I have no intention of commenting on 1000 or so songs, but I do plan on listening to them all, and maybe when we reach the top 10 I'll comment more.

I applaud Shryke's plea for civility, but I have to say that if I'd known that Smash Mouth song was waiting for me in Canada I would have defected to Cuba.

#93 playlist

https://open.spotify.com/user/purplepas ... 2jgQX-t48w

For some reason Hollywood Bowl is missing from the Band Of Skulls album on spotify so please note I have included a live version.

I won't get to listen to any today as I am off to a music festival to see Pist Idiots, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, The Chats, Tones & I, Hockey Dad, Stella Donnelly, J.I.D, DMA's, Earl Sweatshirt, & King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
