2018 in Music

Post by numbersix »

Right folks, gonna kick off this year, probably tomorrow or Saturday, with the usual. Runners up and then every day an album and song of the year from #10 to #1.

Please do join in, even if it's only one or two songs you love.

Surf is doing his usual advent calendar on Facebook if you want to hear some great tunes.

I don't really have any albums to contribute, but I have lots of songs to put in a list.
It's not destroying. It's making something new.

I will obviously be joining in with my collection of music geared towards middle aged white males. If any of you are interested in seeing what I have liked this year you are more than welcome to check out some of my advent calendar picks I have posted on Facebook. There have been some really good records out this year, so many I actually struggled to narrow my countdown down to just 25. Some records that just missed the cut include:

Lump, "Lump"
Personality Cult, "S/T"
Plushh, "Stranger To Pain"
Cat Power, "Wanderer"
Bill Ryder Jones, "Yawn"
Shame, "Songs Of Praise"
Anna Calvi, "Hunter"
Steven Malkmus and The Jicks, "Sparkle Hard"
Hop Along, "Bite Yr Head Off, Dog"
Mount Eerie, "Now Only"
Big Ups, "Two Parts Together"

I'm in! For the third year in a row I actually have a top 100 albums list. So I have plenty of music to choose from that no one will like and hopefully even some that someone will.

Here are a few albums that misseed my Top 10

Tim Hecker: Konoyo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAmjpJ0C6RU
More beautiful, wondrous ambient music from the master

Dirty Projectors: Lamp Lit Prose
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYq5Ch-FFcs
Their 2nd album in 2 years is much brighter and breezier.

The Soft Moon: Criminal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIVB9x-HDzg
Great intense, dark, atmospheric neo-goth

Preoccupations: New Material
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Awikalo6_-A
Great music, lazy title

Yves Tumor: Safe in the Hands of Love
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Edthfw5Pbxk
Lovely shimmering trip-hop

I will give a few of those records a spin, but to be honest I have given the new Preoccupations record quite a few tries but just cannot get into it. As a huge fan of both their debut Preoccupations record and their work as Viet Cong, I was a little deflated by the record, the new sound just wasnt working for me. Have you heard their covers of some Protomartyr songs and vice versa. They are performing an awesome twin tour in the US at the moment and have been covering each others songs as a part of it. Some of the covers Protomartyr have made are excellent.

The Soft Moon record is very good though, a nice balance between early Depeche Mode and NIN, listened to that one a lot this year.

I've heard two of these albums. Lamp Lit Prose is great and is in my top 25, and Preoccupations is in my top 40. Although I agree a bit with Surfer. Apart from a couple of great songs the album, while still really good, is not up to the standard of their previous efforts. I do like the title of the album though....it continues their trend of simple titles - Cassette, Viet Cong (self titled at the time), Preoccupations (self titled), and New Material.

Awesome! I'm ready! There has been some good hip-hop this year, and I have no idea about metal so it'll be good to hear what's best.

Six, that Yves Tumour song was great! I will look forward to checking that album out.

Great list of almost-made-its, Leetsu. Really impressed by Shame, who I caught live last year.

Anyway, here goes...

Song #10
"Cheribum" by Serpentwithfeet

I'm pretty immune to R&B and gospel, but Serpentwithfeet's sound waltzes there via Bjork and The Haxan Cloak to create something woozy and weird, particularly on this simple love song.

Album #10
Goat Girl by Goat Girl

A fine debut from this gang of South-Londoners, who have evidently dined on post-punk, Brit-pop, and grunge.

That's an impressive voice on Serpentwithfeet. Combined with a great rhythm and a strangeness to the music, that was a fascinating listen. Great video too that enhanced the appreciation of the song, as the Dirty Projector's video for Break-Thru also did.
The Goat Girl album is great, with a few excellent songs that were favourites of the year for me. Possibly could have been a bit shorter but I liked all the songs so maybe not. Currently #26 in my 100.

It's a sad, emotional start to my top 10 albums and top 10 songs (that aren't from my top 10 albums). Most of my favourite songs are from my top 10 albums - that's probably why they are my favourite albums.

Song #10
Now Only - Mount Eerie

The highlight from the album that just missed the just missed out albums this year (my #16). Only Mount Eerie could successfully get away with writing a song like this.

Album #10
How To Socialise And Make Friends - Camp Cope

Best folk punk album of the year. Seen them live once and seeing them again this February. This is not an album I would recommend to anyone as it is all about the lyrics and her voice, so if that's not your thing don't bother. Personally I love her voice and the lyrics demand my attention. A consistent album so I am going with the closing song as it complements the Mount Eerie selection.
