I'm travelling around over the next 2 days so won't get to listen to much, but will do so when home for Xmas

Album #8
Mount Eerie – A Crow Looked at Me

Possibly the best album I’ve only been able to listen to twice. This is a devastating record about the singer’s loss of his wife to cancer, and how he tries to keep going while taking care of his young daughter. It’s painful, but undeniably powerful.

Track #8
Oh Sees – Animated Violence

And on a more upbeat note, the year ain’t over until Thee Oh Sees (aka Oh Sees, aka OCs) release something magnificent. This year it’s this cut from their album Orc.

I could only listen to the Mount Eerie album once...too depressing. But I've been recommending it to my family and friends as truly an album they should listen to once, it's just that I won't listen to it again with them. Amazing...but not what I choose to listen to albums for so not in my top ten "favourites".
Oh Sees do it again, just keep releasing great albums. Two this year with Orc and Memoy Of A Cut Off Head. Very different from each other. I just wish they would sort out their identity crisis. Awesome song!

Album #8
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Murder of the Universe

King Gizzard include elements of heavy metal and spoken word but retain their distinctive sound in their second album from this year. Set in three acts it tells a story that I still haven't fully worked out but I'm enjoying getting more of it on each listen. It's also great to see a song (Lord of Lightning) that had become a bit of a fan favourite, and a favourite in our household, from only seeing it performed live a few times, appear on the record.

Song #8
Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - French Press

An Australian band signed to the Sub Pop record label. If there is a distinctly Australian type of sound in music (the equivalent of Brit Pop or Americana) it is sort of a Go-Betweens/Triffids type of sound from the 80's and this band are following on with that in 2017. A grower of a song that is still very good on first listen but gets even better as time goes on.

Leets, it was you who introduced me tko King Gizzard. Really like them. I got Flying Microtonal Banana, which I enjoyed, but it's intimidating to get into a band who released 4 albums this year alone!

Album #7
Idles – Brutalism

These guys came out of nowhere. I heard about them as they supported The Fall, but they’ve definitely carved out their own identity as a fast-paced punk rockers with a social conscience, taking on depression, poverty, sexual harassment with a sense of wit so it never sounds preachy.

Track #7
Fever Ray – idk About You

One half of The Knife keeps it relatively simple in this strange, percussion driven tune about identity

Album #7
Dune Rats - The Kids Will Know It's Bullshit

A bit of a guilty pleasure this one. It's just your basic garage punk band singing songs about partying and getting wasted, made for the youth of today, but when I listen to them they always put me in a great mood and take me back to my younger days loving punk music with it's trivial lyrics. I've been listening to them for a few years now and they really are just such a fun band who love what they do and put on an energetic live show that has the whole crowd moving and jumping and pogoing and dancing and singing (or more like shouting) along. This album was produced by Zac Carper from FIDLAR and you can hear his influence on this compared to their debut. He adds a tiny bit of class, although they are still far from classy. But hey, they all took their mums as their plus ones to the ARIAs (Australian music awards) this year so they're good boys!

Track #7
Gang Of Youths - The Deepest Sighs, the Frankest Shadows

From their award winning sophomore album that just missed the cut for this albums list. Unlike the Dune Rats album above this is a quality album that I highly recommend to anyone and everyone.

There's still one week of 2017 left! lol
And not to mention their back catalogue of 8 albums before this year, some of which are really worth checking out (Quarters, Float Along, Paper Mache Dream Balloon, and I'm In Your Mind Fuzz just to mention a few).

Album #6
Mount Kimbie – Love What Survives

This is just a gorgeous album. Its cold electronics are given warmth by that organic bass guitar, with guest spots from the likes of King Krule, James Blake, and Mica Levi

Track #6
Flesh World – Destination Moon

I can’t get this track out of my head. It’s a cover of an 80s synth band, and this post-punk guitar adaptation is brilliantly loose.

Album #6
Oh Sees - Orc

They have done it again! Every year they release an album that is just as good, if not better than the last one. Each album has their unique distinctive sound so you know it is an Oh Sees song but at the same time each album is different with it's own sound so you can usually tell which album on Oh Sees song is from. This album is a bit heavier, and a little bit proggy. The first three songs are just bang!, bang!, bang! Best start to an album this year. And I love the focus on the drumming of the album closer Raw Optics. But as usual with Oh Sees the first song on the album, Static God, is the highlight.

Song #6
Cloud Nothings - Realize My Fate

A pretty solid album but I love this album track more than any of the singles. I am definitely a sucker for a powerful album closer.

Happy Christmas, y'all

Album #5
LCD Soundsystem – American Dream

James Murphy reforms the band and happily refuses to make the same kind of music as before. At least lyrically, with this album sounds more reflective and melancholic as Murphy ruminates on death and aging.

Track #5
Downtown Boys – Somos Chulas

The one good thing about how fucked America has become is the art that comes out of it. These guys are a diverse gang shouting punk tunes about Trump’s world, with this Pixies-esque tune being one the highlights of their new record.

Album #5
LCD Soundsystem - American Dream

Is this their best album yet? After three excellent albums, then retiring on a high, they reform after many years and release this incredible album. I need to see after more time has passed how this album holds up but at this stage I think it could be!

Song #5
Superorganism - Something For Your M.I.N.D.

Is this a case of mandela effect or am I just going crazy? Really early in the start of the year I was loving this song then one day it just disappeared from spotify, stopped getting played on the radio and just ceased to exist. I could find references to it on the net but no explanation of what had happened. Fast forward six months later and it returns, apparently an uncleared sample was the reason, but to me it just doesn't sound the same. Something is different but I can't figure out what it is. Maybe they were giving us something for our minds? Still a fantastic song though from this international collective. They released a couple of other great songs this year too so I'm really looking forward to their debut album.

Totally agree on that Cloud Nothings song, Leetsu, the highlight of the album.

Album #4
Priests – Nothing Feels Natural

Another political album, this time from the Washington DC act fronted by the charismatic Katie-Alice Greer, this record is dripping with wit, anger, and sarcasm.

Track #4
Thurston Moore – Cusp

Thurston almost sounds romantic in this rolling, Branca-influenced barrage of sound and rhythm.

Album #4
The Smith Street Band - More Scared Of You Than You Are Of Me

An excellent album from this folk punk band. Their best album so far, and that's saying a lot as all their albums have been great.

Song #4
Camp Cope - Footscray Station

This is actually an older song of theirs, and a bit of a fan favourite, that only got a release this year.

I haven't had enough time lately over this busy Christmas period to have a decent you tube listening session since the last one but of what I already know, I love the Idles album. It's such brutal music. Made my top 25 of the year, just so many great albums. Haven't heard the Mount Kimbie album except for the song with King Krule on guest vocals which I like a lot but probably more due to King Krule than Mount Kimbie. Snap on LCD Soundsystem. Probably the only album we'll have in common and same placement at that. The Priests album was decent, but I only listened to it a few times, and I love the Thurston Moore song. Everything else is new to me although I have heard Downtown Boys before just not their latest album.

Album #3
Kendrick Lamar – DAMN.

I thought Kendrick’s follow-up to To Pimp A Butterfly would inevitably fall short of expectations, but he managed to create something different and equally as powerful. This time he juxtaposes dual aspects of his, and African-American, nature, revealing a personality of inner struggle and complexity, all the while firing out some amazing tunes. And making U2 cool again is simply a miracle.

Track #3
Sufjan Stevens – Mystery of Love

Call Me By Your Name is all about those pangs of love, that beautiful lovesick feeling of that first real obsession. And a huge amount of that is conveyed by Sufjan’s beautiful tender song, as he barely breathes out the words felt deep inside.

Ugh! Damn, Six! Have you got your lists confused? We're not doing most over rated albums. TPAB was quite good but I did not like this album at all. Even his half finished sounding Untitled, Unmastered was better than this. There is nothing on this album that compares to the incredible King Kunta. I appreciate that he is trying to send a message to those that need to hear it by writing music that appeals to that audience but damn, Humble is an obnoxious song. I'm disappointed that it is predicted to top the Triple J hottest 100 this year. Loyalty is dull. In fact I don't think I enjoyed any of the songs in this album. And no, U2 are still not cool, and despite what the critics have been trying to tell us for a couple of years, neither is Rihanna. I would rather listen to Joey Badass, Vince Staples, or Run The Jewels to name a few. And in terms of protest rap AB Original have made the best protest rap album of recent years. A slept on album, but not under rated by those that have listened to it.It might be protesting the treatment and issues of Indigenous Australians so have little relatability to those outside Australia (although justice, fairness, education, and tolerance are universal concepts) but damn it's powerful and important, and despite the subject matter, an entertaining listen. Sorry, rant over now. :D
