Summer Mix-Tape

Post by NSpan »

doin a mixtape swap over at GeekScape.net -- the theme is 'The Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer'.. here's what I got so far:

Blue Oyster Cult - This Ain't The Summer Of Love
Bob Dylan - Summer Days
Chicago - Wake Up Sunshine
Clinic - Sunlight Bathes Our Home
Joe Brown - Here Comes The Sun
Daniel Johnston - The Sun Shines Down On Me
Donovan - A Sunny Day
Donovan - The Sun Is A Very Magic Fellow
Frank Black and the Catholics - Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day
Frank Sinatra - Summer Wind
George Benson - Summer Breeze
George Harrison - Rising Sun
Giles, Giles & Fripp -- The Sun is Shining
Gov't Mule - Soulshine
Mungo Jerry - In The Summertime
Handsome Boy Modeling School - Sunshine
Kinks - Sunny Afternoon
Kool & the Gang - Summer Madness
Living Colour - Sunshine Of Your Love
Lovage - Everyone Has a Summer
Lovin Spoonful - Summer In The City
T Rex - Summertime Blues
Me First And The Gimme Gimmes - Seasons In The Sun
Meat Puppets - Up On The Sun
Moistboyz - In The Valley Of The Sun
Parliament - Liquid Sunshine
Phish - Who Loves The Sun (Live)
Phoenix - Summer Days
Pink Floyd - Fat Old Sun (Live at the BBC)
Queen - Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon
Sam Cooke - Summertime
Stevie Wonder - Summer Soft
B-52's - Summer of Love [Original Unreleased Mix]
Beach Boys - Summer Means New Love
Brian Jonestown Massacre - Let's Pretend It's Summer
Chi-Lites - I Found Sunshine
Doors - Summer's Almost Gone
Greenhornes - Lovin' In The Sun (Alternate Version)
OneUps - Summers (Earthbound)
OneUps - Isle Delfino (Super Mario Sunshine)
Raconteurs - Yellow Sun
Redwalls - Summer Romance
Velvet Underground - Ride Into The Sun (Instrumental)
Yardbirds - White Summer

that adds up to about two full pretty-good discs-worth of music.. i'm aiming to whittle it down to one great cd... any tips/suggestions/questions/comments?

and, yes, i DID take the literal route--but the number of songs in my collection that are superficially connected to "summer" or "sun" bordered on the thousands... so i figured i could easily work a good/fun/creative mixtape out of that coldly logistic base pool..

while i tried to shy away from being TOO obvious, i'm more concerned with accidentally valuing obscurity-for-the-sake-of-obscurity... i'd rather have good music that people are familiar with, rather than have shitty music that serves no end but establishing indie-cred with hipsters..

The word needs more Wesley Willis!

The only addition I can think of off the top of my head is Who Loves the Sun by the Velvets.

i have a version of Phish covering it on the list--and they play it straight; it''s a respectable cover... but i don't think i can bring myself to replace such an authentic track with a lowly phish cover, so i'll probably replace it with the original

Wise decision.

Other ideas would be 'Sunny Day' by Pigbag, 'Sunshine and Cloud 'by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, 'Sunny Feeling' by Wilco, and the Bright Eyes version of 'Sunrise Sunset'

A late suggestion : Take a Run at the Sun - Dinosaur Jr's attempt at a Beach Boys "type" of song.

Your suggestions didn't go unheeded (though I feel bad none of 'em made the final cut..).

It's not the BEST mix ever, but it's what I came up with--and that's sorta the fun with mixtapes.. that was the best mix to me at that MOMENT, and now it's captured in time.. and i think it fits a sort of weird summer-y vibe.. almost like a meta-summer--you know, songs that have summer on the mind but aren't quite there yet..

It could also use some Tiny Tim.
