So you first listened to Joy Division in France, ha ! And you bought the album right next to where I would be living a few years later ! That's funny !

Ozzy: SS's Queen comparison is fair, although I find them fun while I don't get the same enjoyment out of these guys. Sorry!

Geez: Well, I'll give you this: they're certainly a band best heard live. I listened to the first 3 songs from the live album (Grooveshark is a great site) and they weren't bad.

John E: Well, NSpan tempted me but you sealed the deal. This is the album of Led Zepp that has impressed me the most. I only knew one of the tracks you posted, but all of them are excellent. I love when the drums kick in during Black Country Woman. This is now on my To Get List.

Leetsu: An excellent Pixies record. Surfer Rosa just beat it, but this is a highly consistent and endlessly entertaining record.

SS: Ah, I should have known this would hit your Top 10. I'm in two minds with this one. On one hand it has some of the band's best songs. Tonight Tonight is a stunning pop song, for example. On the other hand, I never quite felt that it deserved its time as a double-album. There's just a bunch of songs that do nothing but make me anticipate the songs I like. I guess the fact I never upgraded by cassette version probably says all.
I'm also surprised that you're not a fan of Funhouse. While Raw Power is more fun, their first album is so uneven. This has so many awe-inspiring riffs. Don't worry, you'll figure it out soon ;-).

Ron B: While I'm not a big fan of hip-hop, 2pac is definitely not someone I could ever really listen to.

Tranny: I probably remarked this before, but it's like an unholy mix of metal, prog, and emo. I appreciate their ambition with a 14 minute song with various segments, but as a whole I couldn't connect on any emotional level.

Recipe for a perfect album: Take a promising singer-songwriter who is well-respected in the industry and has been covered by more successful artists like Tom Petty (“Changed The Locks”) and Mary-Chapin Carpenter (“Passionate Kisses”). Have her take eight years between albums to fine-tune every song and throw away everything that isn't first-rate material. Bring in a couple of crafty veterans to help on the production side (Steve Earle and Roy Bittan) then stand back and let the magic happen.

Tom Waits, “Rain Dogs”

It's tough to say which Tom Waits record I love the most. Sometimes it's the gloomy Bone Machine, sometimes it's the jazzy Blue Valentine, sometimes it's even the theatrical The Black Rider. But I think as of today Rain Dogs is the best demonstration not only of Tom's eccentricities but also his range. I'm pretty sure opener Singapore was the first "weird" Waits song I ever heard, having already been familiar with his jazzy records, and was impressed. And scared.

Beyond the initial sense of strangeness there are some heartfelt moments. Hell, even Rod Stewart ended up covering Downtown Train and making it into a minor hit. There are rousing drunken singalongs, there is a demented polka, even a stripped-down blues number. Though I like him best when he's unique in his downright oddness, with songs such as the title track and the offkey Tango Till They're Sore. Again, all connected by Tom's witty lyrics. There's nobody like him.

Another album that had a major influence on me growing up. I finally was able to see em live at the O2 arena in London. This album made the Chilli Peppers a Massive band worldwide, but it was also my introduction to tRHCP apart from the single Under the Bridge. They morphed into a hugely talented band from vocals to guitar to bass/drums, going away from funk a bit. Its the guitar solo's that grip you that never gets old. Anthony Keidis found his voice and used to it maximum effect increasing his range. I can Relax, or Rock out or just listen to this whenever. Its the crowning achievement for this great band.

Radiohead, "The Bends"
, 1994

While many prefer OK Computer and it's more expansive, space opera themes, and obviously by my placing in the countdown I also love it, for me The Bends has always just shaded it. Perhaps its nostalgia, or more likely the fact that I'm more likely to put this on my record player than their follow up, but either way, it's a record I truly adore.

I remember picking The Bends up prior to any other Radiohead release. I had heard Creep before, but assumed it was just a one hit wonder. However, in the early days of computer technology, I was perplexed by the cover art to The Bends. Indeed, like many records I now love, this was bought solely on the cover. And I've never had a more satisfying blind buy in my life. The Bends is largely known as Radiohead's guitar rock album. And that's true, with tracks like The Bends, Bones and Just showcasing this wall of noise embracing Yorke's falsetto lyrics, but there is more to this record than that. It contains some of the band's most heartbreaking songs, indeed some of the most tender, haunting and poignantly beautiful songs you'll ever hear, be it Street Spirit, High And Dry or Fake Plastic Trees, while the band also hint at the more expansive sound that was to come in Planet Telex and My Iron Lung.

And it's this combination of styles that just makes The Bends such a fantastic record. It oscillates between one style and the next in perfect harmony, with this unifying melancholic theme running through it all. It's a beautiful record, and one that still sounds just as fresh today as it did almost 20 years ago.

My favourite from this round would be the Violent Femmes with Tom Waits in second.

I only have the Femmes best of collection, Add It Up, and I saw them live once, and it seems like a lot of their best songs were on this album.

Album No.5

JohnErle: Lucinda Williams, "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" - Other than Jackson, which I felt was a lovely song with a great slide guitar, this just didn't really work for me. It's a little too country for me, so that while at times the music was good, I didn't really like her style of singing. I can appreciate the rawness of her lyrics, and I can certainly see why someone would love this record, but for the most part I was fighting to like it.

Leestu: Violent Femmes, “Violent Femmes” - Another record that made my own list. I was surprised to see someone other than myself or NSpan rate it, but I guess it does fit with your tastes very well.

numbersix: Tom Waits, “Rain Dogs” - I've been slowly working up my appreciation for Waits over the last few years. At first I hated his gravely voice, and his maudlin style didn't get me going. But slowly and surely I've been converted. And even more so on this countdown. I already own Swordfishtrombones, Mule and Blood Money, while Blue Valentine is next on my list. This has joined it now though, love Rain Dogs and it's carnival-esque style, while Time reminded me of Leonard Cohen! Great stuff.

Ron Burgundy: The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, "Californication" - Certainly my favourite RHCP release, so much funk but it's all held together with some fantastic pop songs. Good picks too, Otherside and Parallel Universe are two of my favourites from the album.

transformers:System Of A Down, "Toxicity" - I forgot you hadn't listed this record already, but I can totally see why it made your list. Surprised really that despite pretty much every SOAD record appearing on the countdown through various members, I don't recall their debut making anyone's list, which I think runs this very close for their best.

The Australian version of GreenDay, this rock/punk band's debut album blew me away when I first heard it. I saw them live when they were supporting The Offspring about 10 years ago and they completely out staged them.

Green Day's finest hour. A band I love, a band I need to see before I die, a band that produced an album so great that it reaches my ultimate top 5 of all time. I honestly may have listened to this album more than any other album in my life. It's just a great, great listen from front to back. You have countless radio hits, and the other tracks don't lose any of the steam. this album launched Green Day into what they have become today and have been for nearly 20 years: the face of the pop-punk genre. Without Dookie, I doubt anyone has even heard of this band.. with them, they are one of the biggest rock bands working today. And they completely deserve it.

I agree Surfer System's debut is one of their strongest ("Suite-Pee" and "P.L.U.C.K" are probably in my top 5 Systems songs ever and it's definitely their most chaotic piece of work) and if this was a top 200 list, it would be on there. It's my 3rd favorite of theirs behind Toxicity and Hypnotize.

Ozzy: I don't think I'm qualified to say whether this is good pop-punk or bad, I'll leave it to Geezer. But it wasn't my thing.

Geez: Again, Green Day aren't my thing but this record is the best of what I know of them.

John E: As I listened to the first song I kind of had the same response to SS, but I think the other two songs turned me around. I really enjoyed the rhythm of the second song, and the third was quite beautiful. I can't say I'm going to rush out and buy the record but it was a damn good listen. Plus it's nice to see surprising picks in the Top 5.

Leetsu: I love these songs. I don't know why I don't have it. I guess Blister felt so over-played that it put me off their other music. But this, NSpan and SS's picks were all sublime.

Ron B: The thing about this record is while I don't feel any of it is exceptional, it's very unoffensive in its sort of gentle guitar rock.

SS: The Bends ahead of OK Computer? Controversial. Must be a nostalgia thing. I really do love this record, including the "lesser" tracks such as Black Star and Bullet Proof. All great tunes but I think OKC and Kid A just pushed the boundaries a little more and made me value it that much more.

Tranny: I just can't get into these guys. I guess because I keep feeling that the singer is constantly taking the piss, making them sound like a band fucking around.

I've said it before, but sometimes the most popular can indeed be the best. The Clash came into their own here, pushing the boundaries of what they achieved before, collecting all their influences into one record that even the traditionalists can't help but describe as epic. Hell, I don't even like ska yet their take on it (Rudie Can't Fail or the dubby Guns of Brixton) is amongst their best. Whatever Strummer and co absorbed into their sound, they made it sound good.

I'm glad I'm not a musician. How frustrating must it be to hear a record like this, in which almost every song sounds like a hit single. Each song is catchy, accessible, and stands on its own. And while I wouldn't call the songs intellectual, it's fair to say that Strummer was a smart guy who managed to touch on some important issues of the time as well as universal ones, whether it was modern alienation, social inequality, or even contraception. Good lyrics and great music makes for one of the best albums I'll ever hear.

Introduced to me by an older mate of mine, i had never heard a full album of the Stones, and then he put this on full blast and we just sat there listening.....and drinking. Bluesy Rock that has Keith Richards in full swing and Mick Jagger just blasting away. A Fine album and the best blues and rock album ive listened to, its clearly influenced by some of the past blues artists of the 40s and 50s. But the lyrics are equally impacting as the music like Gimme Shelter giving you a profound sense of what was going on at the time.

The Clash are a band that a boy growing up during the 80s just knew, inside and out. London Calling, Train In Vain, Rock The Casbah, Should I Stay Or Should I Go, White Riot, Career Opportunities. They were everywhere. The fact that a punk band could have their music played in supermarkets, Christmas parties and fayre's just proved how popular they had become. Their sound was just inherent within my philosophy of music. I didn't pick up London Calling until I started earning money on my weekly paper round, but once heard, it was never out of my CD player. I would literally listen to it on repeat for an entire afternoon.

Echoing American radio newsman Edward Murrow's catchphrase during World War II in the wake of what the band essentially saw as an apocalypse (in terms of depression era UK and the punk movement) on the horizon, London Calling is a call to arms for the British youth to stand up for themselves at take pride in their nation. The music, however, is a huge step forward from their debut. It's a sound that spans genres, but always holds key to it's foundations some fantastic pop. Hit after hit after hit. And that's why a band like The Clash could be found played in the most un-punk like establishments while I was growing up. They had managed to coerce the public into loving such issue led songs, smuggled in a revolution on the back of pop music. And I for one, have never been the same since.

Easily the best round so far. A double dose of one of my top ten picks, one that made my top 50 (VU) and an album that changed my entire musical identity when I was 14 years old, Back In Black. Can't complain about that.

First Hell's Bells, then To Whom The Bell Tolls. That's a lot of bells for one round. Totally made me want to hear this:

Album No.4

englishozzy: AC/DC, "Back in Black" - I think I've made my feelings clear regarding this band, not a fan at all. Would have appreciated to hear a few less well known tracks to see if my opinion could be swayed, but as it is it's the AC:DC I really dislike. And I do find it funny that the band are such an institution is Australia, and that it's almost criminal to not like them!

JohnErle: Steve Earle, "I Feel Alright" - You've already introduced me to Earle during the countdown, and this has only furthered my interest and appreciation for him. Really lovely songs once again. I'll make this record a priority.

Leestu: The Velvet Underground, “The Velvet Underground & Nico” - Yet another of your top ten that made my own list. Your on a run! Great picks as well, a fantastic record.

numbersix: The Clash, “London Calling” - Great mind think alike once again! Truly a one off band who could adapt their style no matter the genre and still sound fantastic. Great picks too, Rudie is one of my favourites.

Ron Burgundy: The Rolling Stones, "Let it Bleed" - Alongside Sticky Fingers probably my favourite Stones record. Other than Monkey Man I feel the blues isn't quite as much an influence as previously, they had taken on a much bigger sound by now, highlighted by the fantastic openers and closers of Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want. Country Honk has always been a lesser song for me, but is just the one down point in a good record.

transformers: Metallica, "Ride the Lightning" - Again, like a few of the other Metallica records, I haven't really given it its due since buying it last year. What I have heard I've liked very much, certainly alongside Master Of Puppets as some of the band's best work, with the tracks you picked highlights alongside Fade To Black. Reminded me to listen to it a little more.

An awesome round, most likely due to three albums being on my own list.

Ozzy: Like the other songs I've heard from this record, it's all good fun.

John E: You Steve Earle fanboy. Actually, I liked this a bit more than the last one you posted, especially the third track. Perhaps it's down to, as you said, the urgency of having to record new music. Not bad. I still can only see Steve as the wise sponsor to Bubbles in The Wire (and just noticed that the photo of Earle in Wikipedia is of him playing in a music festival in my home county).

Leetsu: Good to see this so high on your list. One of my favourites.

SS: I felt this was coming up on your list. Great song choices (although there's barely a dud on the record. Koka Kola and The Right Profile are my least favourite and they're still pretty good), I was going to post Spanish Bombs. Interestingly, I was barely aware of The Clash during my childhood - Should I Stay or Should I Go was probably the only song I knew. It was actually after I got into the Manics that I ended up borrowing the album from a mate, and then bought a box set of this, their first album, and Combat Rock. But this is the clear favourite for me too.

Ron B: Wasn't expecting this from you, but good on ya. One of my favourite Stones records. I really need to explore their 60s albums more. And ignore SS, Country Honk is awesome!

Tranny: This is the kind of metal I can enjoy. Good stuff, and a nice way to end an excellent round overall.
