Album No.73

Alyson Tenacious D, "Tenacious D". 2001 - Hah! Funny that I mentioned these on here the other day! Still the same feelings, some really fun songs and some better than expected musicianship, but ultimately the comedy undertones of it all have just stopped me listening to the record, feels too novelty.

englishozzy Michael Jackson, "Thriller", 1982 I grew up listening to 'Bad" pretty much every day when I was about 7, I loved Michael Jackson and would re-enact Smooth Criminal every playtime. Thriller, despite it's title track (and who doesn't love the John Landis video!), never had the same effect on me. There are some great songs on here, but ultimately it's just one I never really spent any time listening to. Maybe I should give it another go.

Geezer Rise Against, "Revolutions Per Minute", 2003 I bought The Sufferer And Witness on the back of Prayer For The Refugee you featured in your 100 songs countdown, and while it was okay, non of it compared to that song. I kind of feel the same here too. Maybe that's the problem of hearing their best first, in that you can't help but compare, but this just didn't have the same hook.

BleedBlackandGold Anti-Flag, "Die For the Government", 1996 - Didn't really know any Anti-Flag before this, I knew the name but nothing more. Sounded okay, very much traditional US punk, and not something I would probably seek out, but it was ok.

Leestu Spacemen 3, "Playing With Fire", 1989 - Surprisingly did absolutely nothing for me. I always expected Spacemen 3 to have a bit of Jesus And Mary Chain going on with them, but it just never really got anywhere, just a kind of space dirge. I'm sure I liked Revolution a lot more, so won't give up on the band, but I was hoping for better.

NSpan - Primus have been on my radar for a while now, haven't heard anything before now I believe but this was really good. It'll be interesting to hear how they sound properly recorded too, just to hear the difference.

numbersix Elliott Smith, "XO", 1998 Smith was a guy I knew by name only until the 100 songs, but I subsequently bought Figure 8, Elliot Smith, Either/Or and XO on the back of the songs showcased. And I think I like this record the best, All of those records are great in their own right, but I find myself listening to this a little more than the others. Great record.

Ron Burgundy Tool, "Lateralus", 2006 - Similarly, I picked up Undertow following the 100 songs, and like someone has previously mentioned though, while individually I can really dig Tool, over the course of a record I find I've really got to be in the mood, and that, unfortunately is not the case quite often. Haven't got this record, but will certainly look into some more of it as I remember Schism from the countdown and it is a good song, maybe there will be more to the record.

transformers Anthrax, "Among the Living", 1987 - Nothing new to report, I'm afraid, just didn't do it for me.

Album No.72

Alyson Traffic, "John Barleycorn Must Die". 1970 - Interesting, haven't even heard of Traffic before, I believe, but that was cool. Will have to look into more.

englishozzy Greenday, "American Idiot", 2004 - For me this isn't Green Day selling out, I think by the time they had released 'Warning', the band's popularity had started to wane from it's mid-90s heyday, and I'm not sure they had identified which direction they wished to take their music in. The direction they did take, coupled with the state of the US at the time, just happened to work in their favour. I like a few tracks off this, the title track is great, and I like 'Boulevard' too, but it also got a little too preachy, I feel, especially with something like the bombastic 'Jesus Of Suburbia'. I know it's supposed to be their take on the rock opera simialr to The Who, but I couldn't help but feel the band set themselves up as another U2, preaching to the masses rather than just focusing on the music. Maybe they do have a responsibility to use their status to bring certain issues to the fore, but it all just smacked of self importance. Anyway, enough of my preaching...

Geezer The Ramones, "Leave Home", 1977 - Another record by The Ramones I don't own, although all the tracks from the record are on my compilation. I noticed listening to their debut record that I began to appreciate the songs more, and no doubt this would be similar. As a compilation it was just too much in one dose, but I reckon in shorter bursts it is much more immediate. That's another criticism I generally have with compilations, that sometimes there's too much of a good thing and it just overloads you. Will try and pick up this as an individual record as many of the tracks on there are a lot of fun.

BleedBlackandGold Tiger Army, "Tiger Army II: Power of Moonlight", 2001 - Not really a fan of rockabilly on the whole, so this didn't really work for me.

Leestu Rage Against The Machine, "Rage Against The Machine", 1992 - As I previously mentioned, for me this is definitely their best record, both in terms of hits and consistencty. Need to listen to this again actually, haven't done so in a good 5 years.

numbersix Bloc Party, "Silent Alarm", 2005 - Again need to re-listen to this as its appearances during the countdown have reminded me what a great record this is. Never really considered the Gang Of Four influence, but it is indeed very apparent now I think of it, though I believe their decision to make their sound more expansive definitely worked for them. Hate everything they've produced since, though. Will have to check out 'Four' to see if this is still the case....

Ron Burgundy The Living End, "The Living End", 1998 - They seem to be pretty popular over in Aus, but here in NZ not so much. I can see what appeals, it's very radio friendly, but just not for me.

transformers Red Hot Chilli Peppers, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", 1991 - Still need to get around to picking this up. I considered Californication for my own countdown as it was something I listened to a lot in my later teens, but ultimately it didn't make the cut, but the band certainly know how to make their fuky sound catchy and exciting. I'd agree their coolness has probably waned recently, but I think that's mainly because they became too popular, if that's possible. They became so huge it wasn't cool to like them anymore. I enjoy 'By The Way', there is some really intelligent writing going on there, but I haven't listened to any of their recent material. So anyway, thanks for reminding me to get this!

Album No.71

Alyson Sublime, "40oz to Freedom". 1992 - I'd never heard of Sublime until the Song Countdown, and at that point I wasn't really impressed, the clashing styles just didn't appeal despite the supposed popularity. Hasn't changed, I'm afraid.

englishozzy Nine Inch Nails, "The Downward Spiral", 1994 - I think I'm going to have to compile the most popular records after the countdown, and I suspect, from what we've seen so far at least, that this will be quite high up. And with good reason too, great pick!

Geezer The Beastie Boys, "Licensed To Ill", 1986 - I don't think I've ever listened to an entire album by The Beastie Boys before, though I love many of their songs. A lot of those featured on here I know, and the one you showcased was great too, will have to look into getting some of their discography.

BleedBlackandGold Kanye West, "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy", 2010 - I remember when Kanye first emerged into the mainstream he was like the cool hip hop artist it was okay to like, he won lots of accolades and his records were well regarded by critics. I haven't been won over by him yet, he's better than most out there, but nothing I'd usually go for. And to top it off he's now looking to marry the most despicable and vacuous being on the planet, losing major cool points in the process!

Leestu Nine Inch Nails,"Pretty Hate Machine", 1989 - Love this record, well I love most of NIN actually, and it is a very catchy record with lots of beats and pulses. Love it.

NSpan The Replacements, "Tim", 1985 - Great record, more to come. Another that I imagine will feature highly in the collected list! And six, I had Left Of The Dial on my top 100 song countdown, although apparently you have erased that from your memory...

numbersix PJ Harvey, "Is This Desire?", 1998 - Great way to sum up a brilliant record, so many details to a very diverse but coherent album. And so many great songs. Didn't know about her work with Tricky though, will be interesting to see how that worked out for her.

Ron Burgundy Prodigy, "Fat of the land", 1997 - Still not something I'd ever go out of my way to listen to.

transformers Korn, "Issues", 1999 - Korn were one of those bands who became very popular for taking on other bands styles. I don't think they ever improved upon them either, just kind of repeated what had come before but became successful for it. And I never liked what they produced, either.

Your not missing much with the new Chilli Peppers surfer imo. Their new one was alright, but I don't think they have made a great album since Californication (By the Way was the last album they made that I enjoyed to any extent and it isn't that great)

I do remember, though I thought it was NSpan who posted it. You two look so alike ;) I believe I agreed with your comparison with REM, although I now think it's more like Joe Strummer and the E-Street Band.

Haven't listened to much of Springsteen's E Street work, though I guess I can see the Strummer comparison.

And the way to tell the two of us apart is usually that faint whiff of courderoy, flower print shirts and pot that NSpan seems to be drenched in. I've [ahem], a much more classy aroma.

Not going to get through nearly as much as I'd like to, but I'm going with my most recent format. I'll let you know if I'm inspired to check out the new stuff, and what I like that I've already heard. Keeps me from being negative...

80

New stuff that I will check into further:
none, but tranny, ozzy and ron's selections were ok.

Stuff I've already heard that I like/love:
Weezer's Blue Album... you're description was also quite hilarious

79

New stuff that I will check into further:

Stuff I've already heard that I like/love:
Flogging Molly - Drunken Lullabies via Bleed Black... Fuck I forgot how great this album is!! Shit. This probably should have made my list somewhere. Oh well, next update!
I like Personal Jesus, but not into too much more Depeche Mode.
Sysetem of a Down - Hypnotize via tranny... I think Mezmerize was better, and this was a bit of a letdown, but its still pretty damn good. Every one of their albums are great. You really can't go wrong with SOAD.

I'm still "in between" laptops, so I've been trying to hold off on buying any digital music until the new lappy arrives... but I'm getting antsy.

Instead of listing albums that I'm vaguely interested in or intrigued by, I've decided to trim it down to the LPs that I'm 100% set on actually buying.

From this thread, these are the five albums that I'll be getting ASAP:

DJ Shadow, "Endtroducing…", 1996
Big Black, “Songs About Fucking”, 1987
Teenage Fanclub, "Grand Prix", 1995
Grateful Dead, "Steal Your Face", 1976
Portishead, “Dummy”, 1994

And I need a consensus on which PJ Harvey album to start with. Thoughts? Also, I'm currently going through my Nick Cave collection to see where I should go next.

I might finally make the jump from compilations to actual albums in the ELO department. Not my highest priority, though..

Albums I Already Own and Enjoy
Anthrax, "Among the Living", 1987
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, "BRMC", 2001
Bob Dylan, "Blonde On Blonde", 1966
Chick Corea, "Return to Forever", 1972
Faith No More, "Angel Dust", 1992
Franz Ferdinand, "Franz Ferdinand", 2003
George Benson, "The Other Side of Abbey Road", 1970
Iggy and the Stooges, "Raw Power", 1973
Michael Jackson, "Thriller", 1982
Nine Inch Nails, "The Downward Spiral", 1994
Nine Inch Nails,"Pretty Hate Machine", 1989
Oasis, "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?". 1995
Prodigy, "Fat of the land", 1997
Rage Against The Machine, "Rage Against The Machine", 1992
Rage Against The Machine, "The Battle Of Los Angeles", 1999
Red Hot Chilli Peppers, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", 1991
Smashing Pumpkins, "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness", 1995
Sonic Youth, "Daydream Nation", 1988
Spacemen 3, "Playing With Fire", 1989

Tenacious D, "Tenacious D". 2001
The Beach Boys, "Pet Sounds", 1966
The Beastie Boys, "Licensed To Ill", 1986
The Buzzcocks, "Singles Going Steady", 1979

Depends what PJ you are after, as pretty much all her records have their own individual identity. For me, Dry is a great starting point as her debut, Rid Of Me is quite punky, To Bring You My Love seems to have a blues influence, Is This Desire explores more a electronic and piano led sound, while Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea is probably her most pop record, though with some brilliantly emotional tracks. Uh-Huh-Her is quite abrasive, but not really one of my favourites, White Chalk is quite sorrowful and almost spiritual. Let England Shake is quite folky, with sweeping landscapes of art. You really can't go wrong with whichever record you start with. For me though, I'd probably go with either Is This Desire, Stories or White Chalk.

Bearing in my mind I haven't had the chance to listen to everything from this thread....

Albums I definitely want to get

The Raveonettes, "Pretty in Black", 2005
Primus, "Suck On This", 1989
Blue Cheer, "Vincebus Eruptum", 1968
Low, "I Could Live in Hope", 1994
Elliott Smith, "XO", 1998
Mission Of Burma, "vs", 1982
Gang Of Four, "Entertainment", 1979

Albums I would like to hear more of first

Bon Iver, "Bon Iver", 2011
AFI, "Sing The Sorrow", 2003
Tiger Army, "Tiger Army II: Power of Moonlight", 2001
Gram Rabbit, "Miracles & Metaphors", 2010
Liars, "Drums Not Dead", 2006
Roky Erickson, "The Evil One", 1980

There are 37 albums from this thread that I already own (too many to list individually).

Not including Prodigy, "Fat of the land", 1997 (which has already been on my list) there have been five albums so far (one in this thread) that are still to come on my list but they are all in my top 50 and mostly high including one in my top 5!!!so there's a bit of a wait for them.
