Hope it is all ok that I take another day off as we hit the end of thread 2. Will try and get thread three up and running tomorrow, so if everyone can ensure they have no.80 to me by then that would be awesome.

I'll try and do a recap over the next couple of days too.

Ween
- Chocolate & Cheese (1994)

Image

1. "Take Me Away" 3:01
2. "Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down)" 2:53
3. "Freedom of '76" 2:51
4. "I Can't Put My Finger on It" 2:48
5. "A Tear for Eddie" 4:50
6. "Roses Are Free" 4:35
7. "Baby Bitch" 3:04
8. "Mister, Would You Please Help My Pony?" 2:55
9. "Drifter in the Dark" 2:32
10. "Voodoo Lady" 3:48
11. "Joppa Road" 3:03
12. "Candi" 4:03
13. "Buenas Tardes Amigo" 7:07
14. "The HIV Song" 2:10
15. "What Deaner Was Talkin' About" 2:00
16. "Don't Shit Where You Eat"

Before I made the decision to excise live albums from my list, I had a LOT of Ween included. They are simply amazing performers, and their live concerts are some of the best I've ever seen. But that isn't to say they aren't talented in the studio. In fact, I think their production values are among the best around. The studio wizardry they employ album after album is nothing short of astonishing. Chocolate & Cheese is a great intro to the band, as it shows off a wide spectrum of their seemingly limitless talents. Sometimes it's my favorite studio album by Ween. Sometimes I prefer White Pepper or even their home-recorded ultra low-budget debut, GodWeenSatan. I've often described Ween as "Steely Dan doing the White Album" (I think I recycled/revised that analogy somewhere else recently). But they're a duo of multi-instrumentalist songwriters who are equally amazing live as they are studio perfectionists--and they have a style that is wholly unique. That's the Steely Dan part. The fact that Ween can take ANY genre and make it their own is the White Album comparison. Hard rock, country, metal, psychedelic, bluegrass, gospel, anything you can think of; these guys will take it and create a miniature masterpiece. Their work is almost always humorous in tone, but it's light-hearted and they rarely do outright parody (at least not in a vicious way). Even when working in a genre as inherently tacky as polka, the guys aren't malevolently tearing it apart... instead, they embrace it. They might mock some of any given genre's more conventional cliches, but the songs they write are genuine and inspired. Picking just two tracks to represent an album as diverse as Chocolate & Cheese is an impossible task. But here's two I particularly dig:

"Freedom of '76"

"Baby Bitch"

Note: if these pique your interest, I also suggest "What Deaner Was Talking About," "Roses are Free," and their tribute to Eddie Hazel, "A Tear for Eddie."

I'd like Six to retract his previous statement that your albums have the worst covers. That is all.

Ozzy - The Getaway Plan, "Other Voices, Other Rooms", 2008
As with many of your picks, this was light, cheerful, and pleasant. You must be a very mellow guy in the real world.

Alyson Adrian Belew, "Young Lions", 1990
Adrian Belew is one of my favorite musicians. The fact that he's been the creative force behind King Crimson since the early 80s is obviously what got me so interested to begin with. Interesting fact: the incarnation of King Crimson that began in 1981 was originally going to be called Discipline (which ended up being the name of their "first" album). The choice to stick with the King Crimson banner was more of a marketing decision than anything. But I'm glad they did, as the cKrimson name probably kept them together since--and they've released six great studio LPs along with a plethora of side-projects and live material. I strongly believe that Belew rivals David Byrne in terms of talent as a songwriter (and far exceeds him as a musician), and it's nice to know that they've inspired each other so much. Belew is criminally underrated, as he is responsible for some of the best playing on records by Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Paul Simon, Nine Inch Nails, the Tom Tom Club, the Talking Heads, and even William Shatner. I don't own Young Lions, but I'm interested to check it out. The video was a bit silly (though it doesn't come near "Dancin' in the Street" in terms of ridiculousness), but the music was quite good. I listened to it again without watching the video and really liked it (in a late 80s way).

englishozzy Incubus, "Morning View", 2001
I think Six mentioned something similar, but my perception of Incubus has been VERY skewed until this countdown. I lumped them together with unlistenable nu-metal of the early 00s. Clearly, they're a different breed. Interesting...

Geezer Van Halen, "Van Halen", 1978
Honestly, this is a good record. If this was the only thing they ever released, I'd dig the band. But they just did SO much to damage their reputation (and the state of music in general) throughout the 80s that I can't forgive them... ever.

BleedBlackandGold Brand New, "Deja Entendu", 1999
I wouldn't consider this "emo" if you didn't categorize them up front. Sounded like pretty standard alt-rock. Your sample track wasn't bad at all. (For the record, if Geezer had posted the same song, I'd declare it to be "bland and uninspired" and then I'd spit in his face).

Leestu Spacemen 3, “Sound of Confusion”, 1986
According to music historians more learned than I, these guys single-handedly invented the psychedelic shoe-gazing genre that I'm currently in love with. Nearly all of my favorite bands from California (and Canada) stem from this base approach to recording and performing. I own the 2-CD set of "Playing with Fire" and the "Singles" collection... though I still haven't gotten into it as much as I anticipated. The songs you featured rocked--and were far less meandering than what I normally associate with the band. What am I missing??

numbersix Yeah Yeah Yeahs, "Fever To Tell", 2003
This countdown (and some recent exposure to this band from my roommate) has reminded me to actually LISTEN to the albums I own from these guys.

Ron Burgundy Frank Zappa, "Sheik Yerbouti", 1979
Another Adrian Belew track! (That's him on guitar and doing the Bob Dylan voice). I have this LP signed by Terry Bozzio. Good stuff.

silversurfer Rival Schools, "United By Fate", 2001
Not bad. I think I agree with Six's Bush comparison.

transformers Machine Head, "The Blackening", 2007
As usual, I dug the music but got a little turned off by the vocals.

Albums I've added to my list from those that I haven't already reviewed:
Teenage Bottle Rocket - Warning Device via BleedBlack
Wilco - A Ghost is Born via Six
Stone Temple Pilots - Purple via Alyson
Jawbreaker - 24 Hour Revenge therapy - via Bleedblack
The Replacements - Let it Be via NSpan (I'll admit, I haven't fully explored this one. It has two of my favorite songs by them though, "Unsatisfied" which is one of the all time most awesome songs ever, and "Answering Machine." When I do listen to it, there's a good chance it could actually end up on the next rendition of this list. Loved I Will Dare as well.)
Get Up Kids - Something to Write Home About via BleedBlack
The Getaway Plan – Other Voices, Other Rooms via Englishozzy
Brand New - Deja Entendu via BleedBlack
Rival Schools - United By Fate via Surfer

Albums I have already listened to and like:
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm via Ron B
System of a Down - Mezmerize via alyson
Taking Back Sunday - "Tell all Your Friends" via BleedBlack
The Clash - London Calling via tranny
Both from Neil Young via Surfer and Six
Hole - Live Through this via Leestu (I need to give this one another listen. I think it might be better than I remember).
the Kinks - The Kinks via NSpan
Beastie Boys - Ill communication
Incubus - Morningview via englishozzy
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory via Ron B
Nirvana - In Utero via tranny
Lit - A Place in the Sun via BleedBlack

Good round. Without going through the full recap, I know offhand that I'll be getting one or two Grinderman albums, as well as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. And I need to explore the discographies of Adrian Belew and Spacemen 3 a bit deeper than I already have.

Thanks. I was VERY tired when I posted that. I should *probably* re-read it to see if my description makes any sense... but, nah!
