Surprised nobody mentioned this:

Zero Dark Thirty is now going limited to only NYC/LA on December 19, and not going wide until 1/11/13.

Smart move to get away from the crowded Christmastime and gives it time to build some buzz because these generic trailers aren't cutting it.

New release date:

Silver Linings Playbook 11/16/2012 limited, 11/21/2012 wide (from 11/21/2012)

The platform will be in the top ten markets to build word of mouth (since the trailers sure as hell aren't doing it).

New release dates:

The Best Man 2 (yes, a sequel to the 1999 film) 11/15/2013
Ride Along (Ice Cube and Kevin Hart are cops) 1/17/2014
B.O.O. 9/25/2015 (from 11/6/2015)
Peanuts 11/6/2015 (from 11/25/2015)

I could see Universal trading The Best Man 2 and Ride Along's dates. Ride Along feels like a much stronger box office prospect and could benefit in a near Thanksgiving slot.

According to Ron Howard's Twitter page, Rush is testing well. With a near-complete movie and positive audience response, could we see it moving up to the summer (similar to what Universal did with Savages this year)? Also, Chris Hemsworth had back to back hits this summer.

I'd say it'll avoid summer and run during Oscar season. Might be pushed back to mid October or early November.

Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away's December 21st opening will only be a two shows a day setup (similar to roadshow engagements). I wonder if this will be done like a regular movie or as a roadshow engagement with premium prices and programs and whatnot.

New release date:

Insidious Chapter 2 8/30/2013 (opening one month after James Wan's previous directorial effort, The Conjuring)

So now there are five movies at the Labor Day weekend spot and two others (one having a similar audience) the week before. I'm betting that You're Next (currently at August 23rd) moves up while Getaway and Satanic move back.

No quick reply anymore... or is it just me?

Anyways, I really want to see ID4 in 3D. They'll make a ton of money on the 3D Blu Extra Super Fancy Edition re-release even if it doesn't bring in enough in theaters to justify a conversion+re-release.

And isn't that a little close for the two Star Wars releases? You'd think they'd have at least a few months in between. I assume their strategy is to get out all six in 3D in theaters before episode VII hits and a 3D box set of the first six to hit just prior to VII. That's what I'd do at least.
Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.

The original plan was to do one each year but the disappointing numbers on Episode I led to Fox and Lucasfilm changing those plans.

As for the question on if it's too close, the 1997 reissues of the original trilogy opened three weeks apart* (and Empire and Jedi still opened in first despite their predecessors still playing and making money).

* Star Wars: 1/31/1997, The Empire Strikes Back: 2/21/1997, Return of the Jedi: 3/14/1997

Going to see Star Wars when they re-issues it in 97 is one of my earliest and best theater memories :)
