In the department of cinematic wasteful spending, Apple is set to spend at least $60 million on a musical version of A Christmas Carol starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds. Why is this a thing?

Masters of the Universe is rumored to be going to Netflix. Maybe this shouldn't have been a live-action film starring a guy with no box office track record.

Hala has lost its date. Not sure if it will repositioned for a 2020 date or is Apple is rethinking its release strategy.

In other news, Eve is now titled Ava. It is currently being tested without a distributor.

It looks like select theatres will be sneaking Knives Out on November 22nd and 23rd. Lionsgate must be seeing dollar signs with this one.

In other news, another major indie label has been announced. Bob Weinstein (the one who wasn't accused of harassment) has just launched Watch This Entertainment, which will produce and release two to three mid-budgeted films a year. Oddly, this is on the same day, Polaroid, the film he got as part of his severance package from his old company, opened in a few theatres.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines is now titled Connected. The date remains the same.

And one new date:

The Boy II 2/21/2020 (from 12/6/2019)

It turns out that Kanye West concert film is only a half hour. Which makes one wonder why it's even going to theatres as its own thing rather than attached as a short with Maleficent.

I don't know if Disney would want to align themselves with Kayne West, or his weird religion sermons.

Universal had no problem including the post-converted Thriller video with The House with a Clock in Its Walls, even with the posthumous allegations against Michael Jackson and Spielberg (his company co-financed House) and John Landis not being on speaking terms ever since Vic Morrow died on the Twilight Zone set.

Disney has done worse in the past (read up the controversy on Powder, for example). Working with Kanye would be nothing, especially for a short that will be forgotten in a week.

Superintelligence will bypass theatres and premiere on HBO Max instead. HBO Max has also gotten exclusive streaming rights to the Studio Ghibli library.

Related to Warner Bros., Doctor Sleep will be sneak previewed on October 30th.

And one new date:

New dates:

Ordinary Love (Liam Neeson/Lesley Manville drama) 2/14/2020
Molly (mental illness drama from Sally Potter) 3/13/2020
Military Wives (World War II drama from the director of The Full Monty) 3/27/2020
Dream Horse (narrative version of the documentary Dark Horse) 5/1/2020
Tom and Jerry 12/23/2020 (from 4/16/2021)

Also, Warner Bros. is reissuing They Shall Not Grow Old in December via Fathom Events for three days. Not sure if it's for Oscar purposes (the film didn't get a one week run in Los Angeles until this February, possibly making it eligible for this year's Oscars instead of last year) or to get it to $20 million total.

If TSNGO can get Oscar eligibility by doing that then it must be done. So much better than Free Solo last year. Can documentaries get technical achievement awards? They literally edited hundred year old film.
