As of right now, all of the US chains are set to be open by next weekend in states where it's clear to open indoor theaters (which is everywhere except New York, California, New Jersey and Arizona) with Cinemark kicking things off on Friday. Of course, this doesn't mean anything and I've decided to take "I'll believe when it actually happens" approach to the theaters reopening. While I have a hard time believing that studios will be willing to put anything of note out while theaters in the top 3 markets in the country are going to remain closed indefinitely, there's also a possibility that we're approaching a breaking point where studios decide to experiment and see if they can make some money in a compromised market in the States like they have elsewhere in the world.

In somewhat related news, Lionsgate has sold the domestic rights of Run to Hulu.

It was a matter of time before Run got sold off.

In other news, Netflix is set to buy the Fear Street trilogy from Disney. I knew this wouldn't play theatrically.

And Amazon and STX are now talking about a sequel to My Spy. Has Amazon ever released a sequel to one of their Prime titles?

As part of Sony's drive-in reissue spree (which has mostly included 80's titles as those seem to be the only titles making any money), they have revealed Grown Ups will be getting a 10th anniversary reissue this Friday. Why is my only response.

The Broken Hearts Gallery will stay with Sony, as they will premiere it through a series of drive-in screenings on the studio lot. Apparently, these screenings have had excellent pre-sales. I imagine it will be released through VOD after the premiere.

In other news, Disney+ will premiere The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special on November 17th. It isn't exactly known if it's a frame-by-frame remake of the original or if the title is merely coincidence.

Apparently, Disney is attempting to get a feature-length episode of The Mandalorian eligible for Oscar consideration as they did a drive-in screening of a few episodes. After the Emmy committee set a rule preventing theatrically-released episodes of shows from qualifying, I'm not sure if the inverse will be a success either.

The Personal History of David Copperfield is looking like a wide debut on August 28th. My local arthouse just included it on their coming soon list (along with the newly restored Me and You and Everyone We Know).

Feels Good Man, the documentary on Pepe the Frog, its creator, and the controversy over the character, will play exclusively at Alamo Drafthouses on August 25th as a Drafthouse Recommends title.

Now I'm wondering if the John K. documentary will ever get released. It played at Sundance but it feels like the people still defending the scumbag are trying to prevent a release of it as the documentary's mysteriously fallen off the map.

Oh, and Nomadland will open on December 4th. Chloe Zhao kept busy during the layoff.

The Rider was really good. I'd like to see what she can do with a couple real actors before Eternals, so I'm there if it plays near me. I wonder how her style will translate to Marvel.
Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.

It should expand around Christmas or January. Disney has big plans for it.

It looks like the Ren & Stimpy documentary was released last week. Very under-the-radar.
