Sherlock beat the Christmas opening record by over $10 million! The previous record was $14 million from Marley and Me just last year.
Avatar could have the biggest second weekend of all time. It made $24 million Friday which broke the record for the biggest second Friday ever from The Dark Knight and actually increased from last Friday excluding midnights.
Alvin will become the second biggest opener ever not to open in the top 2 behind Madagascar's $47 million.
Very good for It's Complicated. Good start for Up in the Air, and wow at The Blind Side.

Holy shit, this is crazy.
All the openers are going bananas - $70m for Sherlock!
And Avatar only losing 7%? I knew awareness is through the roof and WOM is great, but still.

Re: christmas weekend
I expected a 55-60% drop on Avatar and only $27 million on Sherlock Holmes (it looked like another "piss the diehards off" movie with little appeal outside of the niche audience).
Also, Nine looks like a flop with only a $6 million opening. The Weinstein Company's fate has been sealed.

Biggest weekend ever, beating July 18-20, 2008 by over $10 million.
Avatar could go above TDK's second weekend with the actuals. Alvin broke the record for the biggest opening weekend not in the top 2. Sherlock came in second for the biggest non-#1 opening weekend.
Re: christmas weekend
$75.6 million. It broke the second weekend record.
The third weekend record and the fourth weekend record are in jeopardy. Avatar also looks to be #1 for 4 weekends, and break the record for most days in a row over $10 million with 17 days (the current record is Transformers 2 with 12 days.)

Re: christmas weekend
I still see Alvin surprising and taking Number 1 in the next two weeks (since it's a kids movie and Avatar...is not a kids movie).

Re: christmas weekend
Dude, Alvin's chance to be #1 is over. Avatar beat it by $27 million this weekend. Plus, Avatar is having amazing holds. Its looking at about a 25% drop or less this weekend.

J.I., don't you talk down to me. All you ever do it talk down to me. Just because you saw the success of Fireproof happening doesn't give you right to overrule me all of the fucking time. Stop it!
Also, Avatar only beat Alvin by that much because Alvin opened on Wednesday. Had they kept the Friday date, it would have been only a $28,000 or so deficit. And with Sherlock Holmes likely to suffer from the fanboy effect, it will be a close race between Avatar and Alvin.

woah, where did that come from boosh, lol. I didnt see it as bashing either. and I agree with him though, There's no way alvin will beat avatar any weekends, Avatar's second monday was more than it's first monday.
