Weekend tracking 11/20

Post by thswrestler160 »

Figured I'd get us started off.

weekend warrior
1.new moon-104.2
2.2012-27.2
3.Christmas Carol 14.5
4.Blind Side 13.6
5.planet 51-10.8
6.precious- 10

also movietickets.com is reporting 2,150 sold out shows already for New Moon which accounts for 94% of all ticket sales. Side note-the special showings of Twilight ranks second with 2 %

I think that looks right for new moon and planet 51. I think blind side will open a couple million higher thanks to solid reviews and a wide release int over 3,100 theaters.

I also think 2012 will hold alot better and should stay above 30million for the weekend. people are assuming that this one will recieve terrible word of mouth and fall off a cliff just because of its director but there really is not anything to suggest that will happen, in fact it is quite the opposite. It has a metacritic of 50 (including a few 100's if you can believe that), a 38% rottentomatoes (not that great but could be worse) and 58% with RT users, a B+ cinemascore, and a 6.6 imdb after 14,000 votes. The word of mouth really isnt that bad. Its difficult to find a comparable movie because nothing like this has ever been released at this time of year, its closest movie is the Day After Tomorrow which was released over memorial day weekend so that wont be helpful here. The closest thing is Quantum of Solace. Another high profile action picture released in mid november. It opened with 67million on the same weekend last year and 2012 is already showing much stronger holding power than that film. Solace had a 27M friday then fell 4% to 25.8M on saturday and then another 43% fall on sunday to 14.7M and a fall of 72% on monday to 4.1M. 2012 has done much stronger with 23.4M friday then it rose 5% to 25M(a good sign that this is crossing over into the family market), and then fell just 30.8% on sunday to 17.1M and fell 70% to a 5.1M monday (27% ahead of bond). Quantum of Solace fell 60% against the 1st Twilight to 26.7M. 2012 is not a sequel and given that has already pulled comfortably ahead of Quantum of Solace at the same point in its run it should hold stronger. New Moon will take in alot more buisness then the Twilight so 2012 should still drop by about 53%.

Also another thing to think about is with all the sold out New Moon showtimes what will the non die hards who have not already gotten their ticket have to go see when they cant get into New Moon? The answer is 2012

$100 million? I'll believe that when I see it.

And I still think Blind Side can top $20M.

Hasn't Broken Embraces been moved to December?

I thought so too but that one site that reported the date change probably made a mistake. It opens tomorrow in select cities (the Landmark Sunshine in New York has it on two screens).

It is being reported that New Moon beat the record for midnight showings with $23-24 M. It also "may smash the all-time biggest single day and Friday records too..."

You can also expect two more records to be broken by the end of the week: biggest Friday share of opening weekend and biggest Friday-to-Saturday drop.

Does anyone know how much Star Wars Episode 1 made in midnight showings? And if New Moon beat it in ticket sales or just revenue (which obviously went up since then)?

It didn't make nearly enough to be in the conversation.

Top 5:
Twilight New Moon $26.27 million
HP6 $22.2 million
The Dark Knight $18.5 million
Star Wars Episode III $17 million
Transformers 2 $16.8 million

New Moon could very well make $70 million today.

The Blind Side and Precious are also doing fantastic. This should easily be the second biggest weekend in history.

second biggest weekend wouldnt supprise me at all. every single show of new moon for the day was sold out by 4pm so there were thousands of people who had to get tickets for tomorrow. I dont see it having a massive drop off maybe 35-40%. Also blindside sold out 3 of its 6 shows today.
