That date for Woman In Black 2 is idiotic. Not only is there already a horror movie on that weekend, there's no other horror film in February, March, or April. Why wouldn't they take advantage of that?

The Vatican Tapes is due out Feb 27, though it's not like it'll dominate the market.

Project Almanac is looking like a dump title, Max will have limited appeal (despite being a family film) and Lazarus will probably end up being pushed back. The Woman in Black 2 is probably the only title there with name recognition (the first one did gross over $60 million).

Yeah, that's if it goes wide though. It's Lionsgate so who knows what they'll end up doing. It could get the Jessabelle treatment.

October 3rd just got even more crowded. The Guest is expanding wide then (it opens limited on Wednesday), according to its website, making it five movies at that date now.

Mockingjay will be opening one day earlier on 11/20/2014, according to the new poster. Looks like it won't even try to go for the three-day record.

And related to its star, Magnolia has picked up Serena and will open in early 2015.

It's still opening on November 12th. Box Office Mojo is weird with smaller movies sometimes.

And one new date:

The Disappointments Room (Kate Beckinsale in a film scripted by Wentworth Miller) 9/25/2015

In the insanely fast turnaround department, Paramount has scheduled Top Five for a limited release on December 5th with a wide expansion the following week. Maybe I should have hung onto it a bit longer in Division B.

You definitely should have, if the film's as good as the word of mouth is saying.

New release dates:

A Most Violent Year 12/31/2014 (from 11/12/2014)
Paper Towns 6/19/2015 (from 7/31/2015)
Fantastic Four 8/7/2015 (from 6/19/2015)
Kidnap (new Halle Berry thriller) 10/9/2015
Deadpool (because the world apparently asked for another comic book movie with Ryan Reynolds) 2/12/2016

Meanwhile, Assassin's Creed has been pulled from the 2015 schedule after several previous delays.

I'm still kind of amazed that Paramount decided to release Top Five so quickly. They must think it has Oscar potential, otherwise why start off as a limited release in December?

Every other December wide release and most of the limited releases already have trailers and marketing materials out there, so they've got a lot of catching up to do in order to create awareness in anyone who doesn't obsessively follow film blogs and the festival circuit.

Paramount paid $12.5 million for worldwide rights. There's going to be some marketing (expect a trailer with Men, Women and Children).

Related to Paramount, we should also expect a trailer for The Gambler then.

Effective marketing campaigns are usually not slapped together at the last minute. With that kind of investment I figured they'd take their time and shoot for March or the summer, just like last year's big acquisitions, Bad Words and Begin Again.
