Didn't help that Adam Carrolla documentary that was supposed to bring in all the alt-right kids a few months back.

I think any major controversy with The Hunt died when it was initially pulled from the schedule. With only four weeks until opening, it will be lucky to get 1,000 theatres. Universal will need to interest theatres in some way (additional security, reduced booking cut, etc.) to even get them to book such a film.

If it grosses more than $2 million opening weekend, I'll be surprised. At this point, it's just The Interview without a big name.

Reportedly, Entertainment Studios is seeking to get out of film distribution. Boss Level was recently screened to possible buyers for a new theatrical deal (I'm guessing it's going to be day-and-date at this point like Mel Gibson's last film was).

Lionsgate has picked up The Glorias, possibly in hope that it's this year's Judy.

Meanwhile, Saint Maud been pushed a week to 4/3/2020 and will not expand wide now. Maybe if they decide to go wide again, they can recut the dreadful trailer that makes it look like an Amazon series.

I found out the El Capitan in Los Angeles is sneak previewing Onward on the 29th. Not sure if this will just be in the one theatre (the El Capitan sneak includes a lot of goodies) or Disney will sneak it nationwide.

Edit: it is a nationwide sneak.

Looks like Fathom Events will be releasing a Steven Universe movie on March 23rd. I'm not sure how much creepy-looking imagery the screen can stand. Of course, that movie Melanie Martinez (Billie Ellish before Billie Ellish but with creepy drawings instead of looking like a heroin addict all the time) directed did okay in a one-night-only run last year.

Two more flagging careers will get a shot at a second wind on Netflix. Netflix is about to pay $25 million for the Eddie Redmayne/Jessica Chastain vehicle The Good Nurse. If it wasn't from the co-writer of 1917, I think the deal would have been half that.

STX has picked up the US rights to Gunpowder Milkshake (terrible title, I know). I wouldn't be surprised to see this beat the similar 355 (currently scheduled for January but I could see Universal delaying this one after Dark Phoenix bombed) into theatres.

In what world are the careers of Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne struggling?

They aren't quite on John Travolta levels just yet...

Chastain had a big flop with Dark Phoenix, an underperformer in It: Chapter Two (where her character didn't really do much of anything), a film that remains without distribution in Ava, and she's been a victim of overexposure in recent years (remember a few years back when not a month went by without a new project being announced where Chastain was attached?). Meanwhile, Redmayne's only had one big hit since his Oscar win and even that was considered a disappointment compared to the Harry Potter franchise. Also, Redmayne's seemingly turned into a parody of himself like Christian Bale has, but without the success Bale's movies have had.

If their careers weren't on the downswing, a studio might have picked up this film as an Oscar contender.

The Devil's Light 1/8/2021

That Escape Room 2 date has to be a placeholder, right? 12/30 is a Wednesday. Unless they want a really nice sized jumpstart on the beginning of January slot?

Movies usually don't open on New Year's proper in the US. With a Wednesday opening, Escape Room 2 can get the holiday money without having to enter the Christmas logjam or be an afterthought with a Friday debut.

Also, there has been the trend of opening horror the week after Christmas.

I feel like almost two years is too much of a wait for a pulp thriller based on a trend, even though it has the first weekend spot.
It's not destroying. It's making something new.
