A new distributor called 101 Studios is nearing a deal to pick up The Current War. I guess it's expected audiences will ignore the reviews.

Pure Flix isn't dead yet. They've scheduled an anti-choice film called Unplanned for a 3/29/2019 wide date.

Hollywood's going all in on Issa Rae. Paramount has scheduled her dark comedy The Lovebirds for a 3/6/2020 date.

The Landmark near me has scheduled Ruben Brandt, Collector for March 1st. Not sure if this is the official release date, though.

It's opening on February 15th in New York and Los Angeles.

And a couple deals related to Sundance:

- Yardie, shown last year, has been picked up by Rialto Pictures and will open on March 15th. I don't see a Criterion release forthcoming though.

- A24 has picked up The Souvenir, the first of a planned two-part film, and will also finance the sequel. Will these be released separately or as one long film?

Surprised Yardie even got a deal in the US. Maybe to please Idris? The film did bad business in my part of London and it's set here!

Rialto has an arrangement to release some of Studiocanal's newer titles (if Lionsgate or other distributors pass) as they distribute their repertory library. They probably figured that with a name lead, they could make a few dollars when not getting their restorations into theatres.

Meanwhile, last year's Audience Award winner still remains without distribution.

And after plans to expand on January 11th didn't materialize, They Shall Not Grow Old will get a 500 theatre general run on February 1st.

I assume that they will be released separately like those independent Objectivist movies were.

I was thinking more along the lines of The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby.

Some distribution-related news:

- The Orchard's film division has been sold by Sony to a company called 1091 Media. Who knows what will happen to its library.

- Native Son has gone from A24 to HBO and will premiere on cable. It seemed as if this one was doomed after it wasn't ready for Oscar season last year.

And I already mentioned this on my Facebook but a Breaking Bad movie is set to happen and everyone, even the characters that died, will be in it. It wouldn't be surprising to see Sony get this ready for the 2020 awards season and maybe get Bryan Cranston an Oscar.

New date:

The Rhythm Season 11/22/2019 (from 2/22/2019)

Now it's going to be a race to determine which one gets sold to Netflix: this or Gemini Man.

Edit: Saban has picked up the new Jay and Silent Bob movie. Don't expect this to report box office.

Gemini Man will likely be sold. Ang Lee's last film bombed horribly and Paramount's marketing team can't sell anything non horror or J.J. Abrams related. The Rhythm Season should be released in theaters. Blake Lively usually chooses successful projects.

All I See is You was a big bomb ($200,000 gross on a $30 million budget). And Reed Morano's not lived up to the hype she got for The Handmaid's Tale (I Think We're Alone Now seems to have put her in movie jail).

Gemini Man at least can sell itself around an Oscar winning director and a lead that can still get okay results (Smith's year actually does look good so maybe he rebounds from his backlash). Maybe Paramount could move it to January and have a good opening weekend before fast drops.

I'd be surprised if Paramount didn't hold onto The Rhythm Section. It's the first major big screen project from an acclaimed TV director that people within the industry seem to really respect and the presence of the 007 production team leads me to believe that this could be the type of spy movie that connects with a wide audience. The lengthy delay is probably a result of the 6-month production halt after Lively's on-set injury early on in principal photography and not simply a stall move by the studio in order to try to sell it to Netflix.
