Super-contest of 2010// Blockbusters of 2010

Post by delfinasu »

Here it will be the place for us to talk about the 3rd edition of Super-contest// Blockbusters of the year :mrgreen:

If you have some ideas to change the rules of this competition, please share with us...

I have one, to make it a little more competitive and attractive. Please read all the following. Thank you!

1. all the moguls have to choose a top 15 (instead of 10 until now) blockbusters of 2010, no more, no less; release dates (in US) between: 01.01.2010 - 12.31.2010;
2. these movies can be replaced, if they are not already released! Until now, they couldn't be replaced;
3.all the participants must also specify a total of Top 10 movies of 2010 (in Bil. $); this will be the criteria to decide between eventually ties; see par. 7 below;
4. the box offices calculated (as specified in par. 6) will be until 02.27.2011, according to BOM - http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/cha ... 010&p=.htm; this way the movies released in December 2010 will have their chance (from December 2010 until end of February 2011 they can do 95-97% of final box offices)…;
5. sign up date until:
5.1. 01.14.2010; 14th of January
5.2. 01.01.2010; 1st of January
5.3. 02.01.2010; 1st of February
5.4. 03.01.2010; 1st of March
5.5. anytime in 2010, but (of course) you can't choose the movies already released;
6. the algorithm for calculating the TOT$ for each participant - this is also one of the new ideas...
Rank specified by participant - percentage of total cume of the movie specified:
1 - 100%
2 - 95%
3 - 90%
4 - 85%
5 - 80%
6 - 75%
7 - 70%
8 - 65%
9 - 60%
10 - 55%
11 - 50%
12 - 45%
13 - 40%
14 - 35%
15 - 30%

This way, if you post the movie with the highest Box Office at 7th rank, you'll receive only 70% of its receipt. If you post it on 1st rank, you'll receive, of course, 100% of its cume.

One little example (2009 numbers) for you, to understand better my idea:

Rank (chosen by participant)// Movie Title (chosen by participant)// total BO// percentage// BO calculated by algorithm
1// Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen// 402.111.870// 100% // 402.111.870,00
2// Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince// 301.460.022// 95%// 286.387.020,90
3// X-Men Origins: Wolverine// 179.883.157// 90%// 161.894.841,30
4// Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian// 177.233.619// 85%// 150.648.576,15
5// Terminator Salvation// 125.322.469// 80%// 100.257.975,20
6// Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs// 196.294.544// 75%// 147.220.908,00
7// Up// 292.913.068// 70%// 205.039.147,60
8// Monsters Vs. Aliens// 198.351.526// 65%// 128.928.491,90
9// Watchmen// 107.509.799// 60%// 64.505.879,40
10// Star Trek// 257.730.019// 55%// 141.751.510,45
11// Angels & Demons// 133.375.846// 50%// 66.687.923,00
12// The Proposal// 163.900.057// 45%// 73.755.025,65
13// Fast and Furious// 155.064.265// 40%// 62.025.706,00
14// G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra// 150.059.365// 35%// 52.520.777,75
15// Inglourious Basterds// 119.461.907// 30%// 35.838.572,10
TOTAL: $2.079.574.225,40

7. the winner announced on 03.01.2010 - will be the mogul with the highest total box office (calculated as shown in par. 6); in case of equality (the same chosen movies, in the same order), the winner will be the one with the total specified (as seen on par. 3) closer to actual total of Top 10 movies of 2010

Awards proposals: (not necessary, just if you want to do this)
To make it more attractive and competitive, I propose that places 1, 2 and 3 to receive an original DVD from each of the other participants. It's not a great financial effort ...

My proposal to award the winners would be the following:
- Place 1 will receive 50% of DVDs from the number of participants - 3 (minus three, corresponding to the first 3 places);
- Place 2 will receive 30% of DVDs (the number of participants - 3);
- Place 3 will receive 20% of DVDs (the number of participants - 3).

An example, to understand better - for 30 participants:
- Place 1 will receive 14 DVDs, from the participants on places 4-17;
- Place 2 will receive 8 DVDs, from the participants on places 18-25;
- Place 3 to receive 5 DVDs, from the participants on places 26-30.

Advantages:
- because we'll award 2nd and 3rd place as well, this game will stimulate the participants;
- the fact that if it will be a greater interest for this edition, thus it will increase the number of DVDs offered as a prize as well.

Waitin' 4 your feedback... comments, proposals, suggestions...

Sounds good. I like the way that you get a % for each gross. It turned it into a strategy/prediction game rather than a pure prediction game. I haven't been able to participate in this yet, so I'm ready. I'm going to post my preliminary ones right now (since we can now change them) just in case my computer explodes like last year.

1. Iron Man 2
2. Toy Story 3
3. Harry Potter 7
4. Shrek 4
5. Twilight 3
6. Meet the 3
7. Alice in Wonderland
8. A-Team

10. Prince of Persia
11. Inception
12. Sex 2
13. Grown Ups
14. Clash of the Titans
15. The Green Hornet
Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.

I haven't read it all the way through. I stopped when it said you could change films this time. I hate that new rule. I think what made this so unique is that you were locked in for the year, to really see who could predict the next year before it happens.

OK, G! Every feedback IS important! We can vote for every rule...
I thought that this new proposed format will be more attractive. It's not easy also to analyze weekly the chances of remaining movies (to be released) to become a potential blockbuster, instead of... just waiting... Also it will be very important for us to guess the final standings (every rank)... or to be close to a "perfect choice"...

That's why, first of all, I need your opinions, comments, suggestions...

I just like the angle where to win the contest, you need to have the foresight so many months in advance, rather than just following the tracking within weeks like we do for our regular game.

I don't agree with being able to change your roster. And there's prizes? How can we be sure everyone is going to kick in a DVD?

Why not save everyone's picks at a specific date then as well?

This is how we've done it this year and last year... :) If the majority wants to do it for the third time in the same way, no problem with me...

I thought that we need a change, to be more competitive... Any other comments?

Yep. If its an either/or thing, though, I like being able to change them during the year. Just sounds more fun to me.

Look what happened with Shutter Island this year...

Maybe we should have a rule of only 3 changes to your slate over the year??

Time is tickin' away... that's why we have to decide the rules for Blockbusters of 2010.

So, let's vote! Generally, a. is for the new version and b. is for the old one... see above...

Please choose just one option:

1. the movies:
a. can be replaced, if they are not already released;
b. can NOT be replaced.

2. you can choose:
a. 15 movies
b. 10 movies

3. sign up date until:
a. anytime in 2010, but (of course) you can't choose the movies already released
b. 01.01.2010; 1st of January
c. 01.14.2010; 14th of January
d. 02.01.2010; 1st of February
e. 03.01.2010; 1st of March

4. the algorithm for calculating the TOT$ for each participant:
a. depending of the rank specified by participant - percentage of total cume (until 02.27.2011) of the movie specified: 1 - 100%, 2 - 95%, 3 - 90% ...14 - 35% and 15 - 30%; please see the above example; in case of equality (the same chosen movies, in the same order), the winner will be the one with the total specified closer to actual total of Top 10 movies of 2010.
b. the sum of the box offices calculated until 02.27.2011, according to BOM (exactly like in 2009); in case of equality (the same chosen movies), the winner will be the one with the total specified closer to actual total of Top 10 movies of 2010.

5. you want to be a player of the:
a. new version
b. the old version
c. both versions; let's give it a try...

Please VOTE ! Let's decide the rules ASAP!

THANK YOU!
