Oh yes, Spectre, I would have definitely chosen It. And then you could have picked The House instead of me! Bleah, what a bomb.

But you got the Toronto winner, which should be worth a good $20-30 million.

I've got a huge MLP fan in my house, so I really thought this was going to be a hit. But yeah, it's going to bomb. I was so wrong.

I still expect the Bronies to come out for it and see it multiple times (unless they've all got restraining orders out against them). Ninjago's not getting very good reviews and there's definitely a market for something that doesn't feel like it was slapped together as an afterthought.

The lack of marketing doesn't worry me one bit (I almost saw nothing for Rogue One or Wonder Woman before those came out and they made millions).

I hope you're right, Boosh, I picked it in everything but the year long draft. But, the first TV ads I've seen did not inspire me as a parent to go, and I think that matters more and more with these films. Of course, the Bronies can drive themselves. Or at least bike there :)

I think it will play with the Bronies first (especially since it connects directly with Friendship is Magic, I had to research these things for the column so don't judge me) and then families in later weeks. It also has the advantage of not having to face any family films (with the exception of Ninjago) until The Star (which I'm convinced will flop for a number of reasons).

Hasbro seems to really believe it as they've released a bunch of new Pony merchandise and even tried to buy Lionsgate recently (I think money and the conflict with Paramount's Transformers universe killed those plans).

I think you overestimate the "bronie" community. I just quickly glanced at numbers for social media groups and their in the tens of thousands for global groups. Far from enough to create a significant spike. So yeah, I don't see MLP doing much.

Tens of thousands has to be an underestimate (I'm convinced it's closer to millions, as we all know how wrong numbers can be in a place where people are more likely to believe things Alex Jones pulls out of his ass than the truth). Bronies have more or less infiltrated the Internet (along with men's rights activists, the alt-right movement, conspiracy theorists, and Netflix), killing every meme in the process (I've learned a meme is dead once the Bronies, not grandmothers or Today, have discovered it) and trying to justify writing Rule 34 using characters from children's shows (by the way, the creator of Friendship is Magic actually defended this). Also, few fandoms have gotten their own documentary.

I view My Little Pony being like the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: every major studio passed on it as they didn't see the market for a movie based on an indie comic book/syndicated TV show. How wrong they ended up being.

Either way, you might want to stay away from a theatre showing the film for the weekend. It could be Star Wars for creepy people.

We also know how wrong people can be when a few vocal, active psychos troll the internet their entire lives pretending there's a huge movement when there's none at all. I suspect bronies fit into this, and are more niche than you think. they'll inflate the thurs midnight screening figure, but will fail to make this film succeed.
