I'm getting the feeling A24 might have made a mistake in going wide in June with It Comes at Night. Since Krisha was so little seen, it might have been a better strategy to either open in New York and Los Angeles this week and expand wide two weeks later (because not everyone wants to see another Transformers) or to keep it in August as a wide release (less theatres than The Witch but slightly more than Free Fire) and be a bright spot on a weak month. Also, I feel that word of mouth is going to be terrible (it often is on well-reviewed horror).

A24 wants to hit the big time with films like these but they already have and it's not with the films that they want to do it with (they expected little with Moonlight and it became their most successful film).

Well, fortunately, Diary of a Wimpy Kid counterbalance it all a bit ;)
But yeah, Wonder Woman might turn out to be the best pick behind Star Wars whenall is said and done.

I'd rather disappoint with the small films and over=perform with the big films ;)

Of course, it's always better to have an overperforming #1 pick.
Although I must say, mid-rounds picks can be just as valuable. They can save your ass or bring you the lacking additionnal touch. The only difference is, a failing #1 can sink your slate. A failing mid-round pick can be forgotten.
Over time I've learned to appreciate the success of mid-round picks more than the overperformances of #1s, which always kind of expect/hope to do very good.
I can't wait to see my #7, #8, #9, #10 open and see what they do.
My #6, Snatched, didn't overperform, it didn't sink either. It's gonna get me $50M, it's not great but it's not a catastrophe for a #6, I've had almost the same last year with Reacher 2.
Valerian is one of the wild cards of my slate, and my next film to open, I'm really curious to see how this one does. Could be a fantastic #5, or it could really hurt.

I think yuo did well with Snatched. Sure, it didn't break out, but it was solid. And you're right, it's the mid round picks that can really surprise. Last year I failed with my mid rounds and so I made a conscious effort to focus on these for this year's draft. With Diary 4 performing so well it looks like I've learned my lesson ;)

And I'm pretty sure Valerian is not going to help your slate at all!

Valerian won't play like Lucy but I still think it does well, especially since August looks so awful.

Let's look at it this way. Last year, my #5 pick was Warcraft. So anything better will be satisfying for me ;)
