Re: 2012-13 Full Year Slates

Post by numbersix »

I think Shryke is definitely the one to beat this year. Not only does he have TDKR, but he made some really good choices with the likes of Hope Springs, Gatsby, and PArental Guidance. Even if they're only mid-level earners he should still be safe.

Ozzy, Tranny, and Shryke obviously have advantages over the rest of ut. Let's see how theat pans out.

Boosch has a risky slate, with 6 films without release dates. Pitch Perfect and Flight have the most potential but they could also end up with a release date beyond April 2013. The Master, The Surrogate, and Hyde Park are all big risks, and all of them could remain limited releases (though PTA's film obviously has the most potential and is a good bet for next year's Oscar)

Donnie played an interesting game. Instead of taking risks she picked films with release dates. Some may only make $1m, but I guess it's better than a film that isn't released during the game period.

But I actually think the riskiest slate is John Erle's. Man, what a slate. It's a bunch of films that could be huge or could be complete bombs. Snow White, Abe Lincoln, Sparkle, Katy Perry, 21 and Over, Gravity... these are all films I shyed away from as I felt the risk was too damn high. That and my gut says Abe Lincoln, Sparkle, and 21 will be complete failures.

As for my slate, I probably should have picked Skyfall over Madagascar 3. Last year proved that animated sequels don't always work. I'm glad I got Bourne though. I've 5 TBAs, though I feel they'll all get release dates. Riddick could be a Fall 2013 movie, and Gangster could as well, but I'm hoping that won't be the case. I'm hoping Moonrise Kingdom will surprise and earn $30-$40m but I'm not too confident. Also Safe Haven could get pushed if casting isn't locked down, though hopefully if so it'll get a mid April slot and still earn me something. I missed out on the few films I felt will overperform (The Dictator, This is 40, Wreckit Ralph, Hope Springs, Lincoln) and feel that Won't Back Down is the only one that could really surprise.

I agree Shryke has the strongest slate. Hope Springs, Captain Phillips, and The Great Gatsby all have strong potential on top of TDKR. Leestu is a dark horse as well with Twilight, Expendables 2, and Ted should all do really well and Savages and Beautiful Creatures could break out. Banks also has a very good-looking slate with Wreck-It Ralph and Rise of the Guardians having breakout potential (The Dictator could also prove to be one of the top steals of the draft going in the 4th round). I also agree with Six on Boosh and JohnEarle having the riskiest slates. For Boosh, having that many TBA films is unsettling and he took The Master way too early (There Will Be Blood only did 40 and that has a shitload of Oscar buzz, not to say The Master won't, but I don't think it will make a splash at the box office). JohnEarle, god damn that's a huge risk, there's not even one sure-fire hit on the whole slate! (I think Snow White will do pretty well, but the others are huge question marks). It could prove very rewarding or blow up in his face, the jury is definitely still out on that.

I feel pretty good about my slate. In hindsight, I wish I took The Expendables 2 over Paranormal Activity 4, but outside of that I have no regrets.

Looking back at last year's thread, Six predicted that W had the riskiest slate and that turned out pretty well, so I'm not too worried. You guys are just trying to trick me into trading some of my awesome picks!

I had a strategy and I stuck to it and I'm I'm pretty happy with my slate. It's all just speculation at this point but I like my odds.

Walter Mitty is set for December 2013 and Percy Jackson 2 is set for August 2013 so Donnie and Banks need to look for alternatives.

I think some of the data was corrupted during the downtime. I clearly recall choosing The Avengers in the third round.

I guess you were drunk that night you traded TDKR to me for Abraham Lincoln: Vanpire Hunter and Scary Movie 5, then you blacked out which is why you don't remember the trade.

2. Buscemi, $135,901,904 - Men in Black 3 (#1, 3792)
3. JohnErle, $101,093,519 - Girl in Progress (#11, 57), Snow White and the Huntsman (#1, 3777)
4. Chienfantome, $73,785,840 - Dark Shadows (#2, 1550)
5. numbersix, $64,047,739 - Moonrise Kingdom (#7, 96), Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (#1, 4258)

15. Shrykespeare, first film out 7/20 (The Dark Knight Rises)
16. silversurfer, first film out 7/27 (Step Up Revolution)

It looks like tranny will have the lead for a while (unless TDKR can surpass Avengers). Interesting thing is, by New Year's his entire lineup will be completely finished unless he makes changes.

I'll be surprised if Tranny hits a billion. Nearly all of his movies look like duds and The Avengers is simply insurance.

Chernobyl Diaries tanked, but I am not going to write off the rest of my slate. I am pretty confident that That's My Boy can pull out some solid production and put me in a better place for potentially winning this whole thing.

So glad i trusted my gut and stayed clear of MIB 3, it will do well to scrape past $150m. Being so far down in the draft I had to take risks, and I'm glad this one has paid off so far. My slate is horribly back loaded though, with only four films set to come out in 2012 at the moment. Guess I'll be sitting at the bottom for a while...

I am wicked happy that I passed over MIB as well, surfer. Wish Battleship didn't suck so much though.
