This is getting good...

Just from Monday and Tuesday, I've added roughly $11M to my total, and W. has only added roughly $3M. As long as The Three Stooges doesn't totally surprise everyone by bowing to $30M or something, I should take this.

Katniss to the rescue!

If so then major kudos to you Banks. Out of curiosity why did you pick Hunger Games at the time? Did you think it would be a huge (and unexpected) hit or did you find yourself running out of good picks?

Factoring in the outputs of Hunger Games, American Reunion and Wrath of the Titans through Wednesday, here is an updated score:

W, $1.061B
Banks, $1.031B

Eighteen days to go until we crown a champ-een.

I knew it would do well, but I thought the ceiling was 150M, comparable to the first Twilight.

I took it too early, but I really wanted it and didn't want to chance losing it. I never expected 155/350-ish!

It looks like after this weekend, W's lead over Banks will be less than $20 million.

Damn, this is going to be close...

Here's some further analysis.

#1-#2: W and Banks are going to go right down to the wire. (Oh, wait, I already said that.)

#3-#4: Boosh has a $45M lead on Ozzy. However, Ozzy still has two more weeks of Jump Street and Cabin in the Woods to feed on, as well as the OW of Five-Year Engagement, which may be large. Boosh only has the first three days of The Raven, which probably won't be.

#5-#7: Six is currently in 5th, but he only has two weeks of Lockout and three days of The Pirates and Safe. Surfer's only chance to catch Six comes in the form of Think Like a Man; if that film can do $50 million, Surfer could nab 5th place. He should easily pass Chien, who will finish in 7th.

#8-#11: UDM, tranny, Barca and myself. This is pretty much set in stone.

Will Barca be able to participate in the draft in two weeks, what with him moving and all? Have any new people agreed to participate?

Quite a few films were not reported by BOM this past weekend. Whether they are well and truly out of theaters for good remains to be seen. In any case, the numbers of those films is probably too tiny to make any big difference anyway.

It would be weird to see W lose the competition. It has been his almost all year long. Well, competition can be cruel I guess...

Yeah, I do feel kinda bad for W, as in 2011 he was a powerhouse, picking movie after movie which overperformed. But you have to give it to Banks, his 2012 slate has been very strong with only This Means War underperforming. And picking a movie like The Hunger Games, damn. When I was picking my slates I looked at what was going to be released in the March month and thought with Stanton's history and the name of John Carter I was on to a winner. Looks like I backed the wrong horse though....

You definitely backed the wrong March horse Surfer ;)
But honestly, had I had the choice between the two, I would have made the same mistake...

Same here. How was I supposed to know that people would respond to a trend that had been failing to materialize?
