Hmm. Curious. I've heard very good things about it, but for some (probably strange) reason, I always try to envisage the average movie goer looking at the movie list and asking to see a title that's instantly appealing to ascertain if it would be successful. I cant imagine many asking to see that based on its title. Bizarre logic I know, but perhaps it's also sound, which is why so many one word titles do well...

And A Thousand Words, I guess someone had to take it...

Because of the cast and because it looks like the kind of Oscar bait film that could explode and make $100M, I'm going to choose My Week With Marilyn.

I think that looks like potential Oscar fare, especially so for Michelle Williams, and the subject matter could really break out. But for some reason I just think it's going to remain pretty limited. Don't know why, as it's an ideal pick to possibly go huge, like you say. Definitely a potential last round pick for me though.

Tranny takes Bucky Larson: Born To Be A Star (he posted it earlier but had to delete).

Deciding between three movies, my last two picks are the hardest for me to do.

I will be picking...

Arrietty (It's got a Holiday weekend, it's an adaptation of a well-known children's book and Disney is planning a rather wide release on it. Hoping for a Coraline or Gnomeo and Juliet-type performance.)

and

Dredd (Karl Urban as Judge Dredd. And he keeps his helmet on. What can go wrong?)

Wow, didn't think anyone would go for Arietty. Studio Ghibli are hardly reknowned for their box office success (at least in the US).

And is it just me or does Bucky Larson strike you as a kind of Walk Hard movie? Haven't read much into it, but I don't really see this being one of the breakout comedies of the year.

Studio Ghibli's last film grossed $18 million despite a release in under 1,000 theatres and being a crowded August (and performed well where I live since anime is big among college students). Also, Arrietty has the advantage of being based on a beloved series of children's books (The Borrowers, which was previously adapted in 1997 with John Goodman, Jim Broadbent and Mark Williams). I like its chances (and as I mentioned, Disney is planning a very wide release with possibly 2,500 theatres).

And Bucky Larson has been on the shelf for over a year. Despite having Adam Sandler as co-writer and a familiar cast (Nick Swardson, Christina Ricci, Stephen Dorff, Don Johnson), I see Columbia dumping it into 1,000 theatres and making their money on the unrated DVD (of which it will certainly get since much of the film's focus is the porn industry).

Michelle William's films just never seem to catch on, but maybe as marylin monroe things will be different? Personally i hope Arietty will be great, because i have not been fond of Ghibli's last two releases, but even if it is good, it won't make any money in the states. Although i guess there is a first time for everything.

I thought you liked Howl's Moving Castle? I agree though, Ponyo was a little too in line with My Neighbour Totoro (but not as good) in that it was more child focused than Spirited Away/ Princess Mononoke and so I didn't take away as much as I'd have liked. And Boussh, maybe it's different where you live, but I just don't see something which is certainly cult breaking out. Despite The Borrowers connection (which is hardly the biggest of children's books in the first place), or even if it gets into 2500 theatres, I just can't see it happening. The Studio Ghibli style just doesn't seem to work on the whole with American audiences.

And I'll take a movie that was on my No Release Date list, and just now was given a release date: Man On A Ledge

Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, great simple premise, and a studio that doesn't skimp on marketing.
Alexandra Daddario: Eyes of a Demon, Face of My Future Ex-Wife

Ha. After picking my last pick, just realized I didn't pick one film without a release date.

Whereas I have five and counting... Looks like I'm in for a turmultuoous year again. This is probably why I did so poorly last year too...

Good pick though, hadn't heard of it before but it's got a great cast, even beyond who you pointed out, and it's from the director of Ghosts of Cite Soleil which was an interesting watch. A good last round pick.
