I'd expect a spring opening. The Iron Claw didn't get any awards traction and stories featuring opioid addiction tend to be quite niche (yes, we have two themes that are hard sells to mainstream audiences). It would get buried in awards season.

In addition, this is one of 23 undated A24 titles. This includes several finished films that could be in contention to replace The Smashing Machine in the not-set in stone December date.

A24 didn't even attempt to mount an awards campaign for The Iron Claw. They could view The Smashing Machine as an opportunity to atone for that oversight, especially with the juicy "Dwayne Johnson transforms into a serious actor" narrative and a group of potential contenders that looks like it's going to be considerably weaker than last year.

Dwayne Johnson's been trying to do that for a long time now (remember Snitch?). It's probably more likely A24 tries to make it another one of their attempts at being mainstream and appealing to conservative audiences instead of selling it as an Oscar movie.

Are we talking about the same Dwayne Johnson here? What about his filmography-particularly from 2014-present-screams "I'm trying to be a serious actor"? Also, going to go out on a limb and say that he wasn't gunning for an Oscar when he signed up for a Ric Roman Waugh vehicle that ended up being released at the end of February.

Snitch was a full-blown serious role. And Ric Roman Waugh's filmography isn't all action vehicles (see Shot Caller).

If The Rock going serious didn't take off the first time (there was also Gridiron Gang, Faster, and Empire State), it's not going to work a second time, especially in a role many will just see as another action role.

And further suggesting it won't make December, filming won't finish until the beginning of August. It would make more sense for A24 to put something else there but this is A24 we're talking about.

A24 wants to make money (see: Civil War), they'll give this way more press than The Iron Claw. And none of those undated films on their shelves have The Rock and Emily Blunt.

Having just watched Iron Claw yesterday, I can see why they didn't think it'd make much money, but they fucked up not pushing it into award voters' hands over and over and over. Zac Efron was so good in that, he should've been in over Bradley Cooper at least.
