We already do user ratings and I've long taken issue with those, as those can easily be manipulated by certain groups with agendas.

Meanwhile with critic ratings, it seems like much of the time that you can't really tell the differences from movie to movie. Everything seems to have a Certified Fresh tag nowadays.

Lower PTA averages isn't a valid reason to do away with them in the game IMO, it's just a side effect of the lower ticket sales that are occurring right now.

Not just COVID but I feel the lower PTA scores could be a result of the quality of movies currently playing. It's going to take a really good movie, along with people getting with the program on personal health, to bring people back. A film like Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins isn't going to do that.

Yeah, that's a fair assessment. A pretty barren limited release market is also contributing to it. Nine Days and Ailey were the first titles of note to open on a limited basis before expanding and obviously neither of those had a ton of juice behind them. Stuff like The French Dispatch, Soggy Bottom and Red Rocket should fix that issue at least to an extent in the next few months.

Has Sean Baker ever really had a breakout hit? Sure, Letterboxd thinks highly of him but with the exception of The Florida Project, his movies aren't really wide appealed. Also, when's the last time we've seen a film about porn make money?

I was speaking strictly about PTA success. Baker's stock in the arthouse community-particularly after The Florida Project-paired with the rave reviews it got at Cannes should allow it to have a couple of good weeks on the arthouse circuit before it stumbles as a wide release.

Not going to give an update on PTA right now, as Annette and Ema have not reported preliminary numbers.

Annette won't report, as Amazon doesn't report box office on titles that hit Prime Video either day-and-date or two weeks after theatrical. But PTA would have likely been terrible. When I saw it on Friday, I was the only one there.
