I read that Mickey Rourke thought the script of The Wrestler was awful, and he an Aronofsky extensively reworked it into what it eventually became. So Big Fan doesn't appeal to me on paper. So NSpan, what's good about it, and what's the link between it and the excellent Buffalo 66?

Dark, DARK humor. If you "got" Buffalo '66, you'll love it.

Several overlapping themes--and even plot-points. I actually view some aspects of Big Fan as direct homage to Buffalo '66.

To be honest, I liked it enough that I'd rather just suggest it without too much elaboration. Don't even watch the trailer. It'd be a fun one to go in on with a relatively clean-slate.

I haven't seen Big Fan yet, but I pair it with The Fan from 1996. Apparently Big Fan was based on that film.

As for Buffalo '66, I'd pair it with The Opposite Of Sex.

I'm gonna keep Buffalo '66 and Big Fan as a paired recommended double-feature...........BUT The Fan and Opposite of Sex are two movies I'll add to my netflix instant queue ASAP, as I haven't seen either.

The Fan is awful, a very dull, predictable thriller. I'd give it a miss if I were you.

The Big Fan movie is quite interesting dramatic movie. i like this one.

In hindsight, I probably should have paired Paris, Texas with Buffalo '66. I'm not rescinding my recommendation of Big Fan (as it's a good movie, and there are very strong connections between it and Vincent Gallo's debut). But Paris, Texas very clearly informed Gallo's short-lived directing career. I may have mentioned this somewhere else, but it's worth talking about in this thread.

Just as Chuck Palahniuk purportedly read Jesus' Son "300 times" before writing Fight Club and his subsequent novels, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Vincent Gallo obsessively watched Paris, Texas before directing the brilliant Buffalo '66... and the atrocious Brown Bunny.

The less said about The Brown Bunny, the better. But, regarding Gerry, are you referring to the Gus Van Sant movie? I had never heard of (or, at least, acknowledged) this movie until now. My interest is piqued.

Yes, the Gus Van Sant movie. From his shitty prototype mumblecore era.

The one factor that makes me interested in it is the fact that it was written by (and stars) Casey Affleck.

The whole movie is just people saying Gerry for 90 minutes while nothing happens. It's a lot like a higher-budgeted Duplass Brothers movie but with slightly-better acting (but then again, almost anyone's an improvement from Mark Duplass).

I agree with Boosch (though Chien's a fan of it). As much as I enjoy cinematic experimentation, whatever Gerry was trying toa chieve it fails miserably by simply failing to mask its identity as a film that's entirely thrown together. It's a pretentious short film dragged out to feature length.
