I'm always a bit torn with Refn. He's one of the few directors that has made films I absolutely love and others I absolutely loathe. Bascially there are two I admire, and three I hate, with a couple in between. There are very few directors I'm so conflicted about.

Chien, Valhalla Rising: After seeing Refn's Drive and Bronson i had to check this one out. It didnt disappoint, your description fits perfectly bar the short and extremely violent scenes, which are great (if i remember correctly). And yeah great performance by Mads Mikkelson aswell

Johnerle, Into the Forest : Never heard of this, nor seen it.

Nico, Life Aquatic : Good movie, almost made my top 100. Own it on VHS :)

Six, Fish Tank : I actually forgot to include this one on my shortlist, great movie, would have been in top 100-110.

Shryke, Over the hedge : This is one i found to be disappointing tbh.

Surfer, The Royal Tenenbaums : The first time i watched this it was the first Wes Anderson film id seen, and i really didnt get it, didnt like it even remotely. Then after 10 or so years i caught it on TV and somehow it all clicked (i suppose seeing other W.Anderson films helped)

Tranny, Dawn of the Dead : Solid choice tranny, good movie. I tried to watch the original a few years after this, but only got halfway...

UDM, King Kong : After Lotr, i was very keen to see what Jackson dished up next. Cant say i was bitterly disappointed, but i never watched it a 2nd time. I halfway agree with what six said about the kong vs dinosaur scene- it was kinda like The Hobbit films, but at the time i actually really liked the fight itself.

W, Rat Race : Actually caught this one in cinema and also own in on VHS. The plot was worn very thin after repeat viewings but it was fun the first time around.

Chien - Valhalla Rising - I quite liked this one, which I just saw again last week on Netflix.

UDM - King Kong - Really liked the first half of this, including Kong's epic fight against THREE T-Rexes. I'm indubitably curious about the new one, which we all know is just a set up so he can throw down with Godzilla.

W - Silly fun, don't remember much about it.

CHIENFANTOME

The Taste of Others (Le goût des autres) (2000) - Agnès Jaoui and Jean-Pierre Bacri rank among the finest writing duo. Not only films but also plays. They wrote 3 of my favorite French films ever, “Un air de famille”, “On connaît la chanson” and “Smoking/No Smoking”. They are also terrific actors. In 2000, Jaoui made her directing debut with The Taste of Others, a human comedy about a man who rans a company and tries to learn english for his business. He falls for his english teacher who is also an actress. He has a driver and a bodyguard who have discussions about life…It’s a delightfully smart and funny and melancholic film about wondering what to do with your life, when you realize you don’t live the life you want to live. This is French comedy at its best, funny, but also very conscious and satirical.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXj2FltN4BY

JOHNERLE

Mr. Holmes (2015) – Ian McKellan gives a wonderful performance in a Sherlock Holmes story unlike any other I've seen before. There's something profoundly sad about the way even a mind as sharp as Holmes' can eventually be dulled by the ravages of aging.

NICODEMUS

I Am Legend (2007) (Dir.: Francis Lawrence)

NUMBERSIX

No (2012) - Pablo Larrain is already proving to be one of the best directors around, with Jackie getting amazing reviews. This is the film that made me aware of him. Shot on video tape, it’s about the Pinochet election of 1988, an election that was rigged, yet a small but passionate movement against him decided to fight with the power of media. Hero Gael Garcia Bernal is an advertising exec, of all things. The film is more relevant now than ever, considering how the failure to inspire through media is one of the many problems why the Democrats lost. This film shows how the good can inspire the populace.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApJUk_6hN-s

RON BURGUNDY

Moonrise Kingdom (2007) - So, Wes Anderson, you gotta know of him? Right? His style? Yeah? Well, if you don’t know, I feel like this movie embodies his style. Picturesque cinematography to be frank. Great acting from all the cast elevates this film above and beyond, including the youngsters which the film revolves around.

SHRYKESPEARE

Collateral (2004) – In Tom Cruise’s storied career, this is the only time I can think of where he was an out-and-out evil bad guy, and he played it to the hilt. A hitman brought to L.A. to take out five witnesses, he hired luckless cabbie Jamie Foxx to drive him around town while he whacks people. It soon becomes a battle of wits that ends with a final confrontation between them. The last good thing Michael Mann has done.

SURFER

Sin City [2005] (Dir. Robert Rodriquez)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2Dj6ktPU5c

TRANSFORMERS

Super 8 (2011) - J.J Abrams' most recent original project is one of the rare modern films that actually feels like it came out of the 70's. Between the charming group of child protagonists, intriguing central mystery and the feeling of wonder that runs through the entire film, Super 8 would've nicely fit alongside any of Spielberg's early sci-fi gems. Nostalgia has become a staple of modern filmmaking and this is without question one of most authentic-feeling, engaging and flat-out best odes to a bygone era that I've ever seen.

UNDEADMONKEY

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012) - Wasn't expecting much when I started watching but I was blown away by the acting, the story on aging and death, and now I totally want to live in India when I get old.

W

Wreck-it Ralph (2012) - I spent most of my childhood with my friends Mario, Sonic, Dhalsm, and Cloud Strife. This took all the games I played and Pixar-fied it. They even marketed it with a good mobile game that could have been an 80's classic.

I think we're up to 97 shryke ;)

Chien (The Taste of Others: Sounds like something i would watch. Going onto the watchlist, cheers
Johnerle (Mr Holmes): I hardly watched a thing from the last 2 years (compared to TV shows, and how much i used to view), this is just another one ive yet to cross off the list, with your pick, im bumping it up.
Nico (I Am Legend): Was this the pinnacle of Will Smiths career? I hope not, because as well as it started, the middle and ending was pretty average.
Six (No): I remember wanting to see this, just never got around to it.
Shyrke (Collateral): Really good movie. Along with Les Grossman, i feel like you could do an origin story for Cruise's character here, i was actually gunning for him at one point. And good solid cast all round.
Surfer (Sin City): Blew me away at the time in cinema, and subsequent viewing on dvd aswell. It has aged a little for me and i never even finished the sequel :( but this epic dark comic movie is still cool
Tranny (Super 8): Didnt like it. For me it was boring, could have been my mood, because normally i like movies like this.
UDM (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel): I think i watched this one on a plane, but had far too many drinks. So i while i watched it, cant remember a thing besides a bunch of old farts having fun?
W (Wreck-It-Ralph): Absolute gem of a movie. Got a great blend of humor and heart.

Chien: I remember seeing this in uni, and loving it. Brilliantly dry and witty. Must watch some of their other films.
John: Haven't seen it, but certainly sounds interesting
Nico: I loathe this movie. Starts off as a decent sci-fi horror, then sets something up then doesn't bother by the end. That's because test audiences didn't like the ending (despite being a logical conclusion of what was happening) so a new ending was shot and stitched in. It's a perfect example of how reshoots and audience testing can destroy the entire point of a film.
Ron: Great Wes Anderson film. One of his best, I might hasten to say.
Collateral: It was okay until Jamie Foxx suddenly went from normal driver to badass hero. Never bought that.
Surf: A monumental effort of style and atmosphere. Yet, it's not much more than that and as Ron said, it has kinda dated.
Tranny: Didn't enjoy this at all. So derivative on every level, and the nature of the beast doesn't make sense - JJ wants it to be both Jaws AND ET and that just doesn't work.
UDM: Haven't seen it.
W: Haven't seen this either. I'll probably end up catching it on TV sometime.

John, Mr Holmes : Mmmm... I liked the premise of the film more than the film itself. It is quite recent and I don't really remember the film, already. All I remember is being quite bored.

Nico, I am Legend : Probably ranks amongst the films that most irritated me. The book is amazing, and the film completely trashed it by changing the ending completely and thus de-naturing the sense of it. Yeah, I hate it.

Six, No : I really like Larrain, he's really one of the most interesting directors working today. I must say though that No probably is his film I love the less. I have yet to see Neruda (out this week in Paris) and Jackie.

Ron, Moonrise Kingdom : Wes Anderson is already very popular ! He's probably my favourite American director working today so I won't complain. I probably need to rewatch this one, I haven't seen it since theater, and haven't put it in my Top, though I really love it.

Shryke, Collateral : I love the atmosphere of it, but I must say I disagre with you, this is definitely not the last good thing Mann has done. He's done better since. And I'll talk about it later ;)

Surfer, Sin City : Haven't seen it in a while, butI really loved it back then.

Tranny, Super 8 : I like it. It's far from perfect, but it's a good film, although many disagree.

UDM, Marigold : what a surprise, I didn't expect this one to appear. It was a sweet little film, but don't think much more of it than that.

W, Wreck-it Ralph : Definitely not the best Disney I've seen lately, but still quite enjoyable.

Nico, I Am Legend - remember being very disappointed by it.

Surfer, Sin City - What a great adaptation, very visceral. I believe this is on my list, and if not, it just missed.

Tranny, Super 8 - Quite enjoyable story, a slightly nastier version of E.T. The train crash scene was breathtaking.

W, Wreck-It Ralph - Stellar, absolutely loved it. This is very, VERY high on my list.

CHIENFANTOME

96. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) - Peter Weir isn’t a director I am passionate about, but he is one I eagerly await his films each time. His cinema is meticulous, and so well-crafted, some of his films I can’t help but genuinely admire. If The Truman Show probably is my favourite film of his, “Master and Commander” isn’t far behind. This is one of the best adventure films Hollywood has produced this century, filled with great characters and exciting action. A film that knows how to entertain with ambition and intelligence. I wish there were more films like this still made in Hollywood right now. I wish Weir had another film in the cooking.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oyQGHHz8U8

JOHNERLE

Bridesmaids (2011) - I've had enough Melissa McCarthy to last me a lifetime, but she was a breath of fresh air here, and it was great to see Kristen Wiig have a breakout hit after carrying SNL on her long, lean back for years.

NICODEMUS

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014 (dir; James Gunn)

NUMBERSIX

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) - Wes Anderson struggled after the success of The Royal Tenenbaums, but more recently has found his groove. This film is Wes at his most relaxed, allowing himself to play around with his trademark set design while telling a story of a hotel owner and one of his bell-boys. Even though the joy is in the use of style and pacing (it’s his fastest-feeling film), there’s also an important message in there about the moral choices we make and how they carry through generations.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JN5sqSEXxm4

RON BURGUNDY

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) - After Iron Man, I was unsure if there was going to be another great superhero origin story (still yet to see Dr Strange, mind you). But we certainly got a very entertaining origin story from Captain America, Chris Evans- who flamed out in The Fantastic Four, got a 2nd chance was perfectly cast for the role. I still don’t know how they got the diminutive sized character at the first part of the film right, thanks in part to good acting. There was also a very good villain (hail hydra!) with Aussie Hugo Weaving very rarely not delivering. With plenty of adventure, action, mystery and a few chuckles, what more could you want from a marvel film?

SHRYKESPEARE

Gladiator (2000) – One of two Best Picture winners on my list. I love swords-and-sandals epics when they’re done well, and Ridley Scott’s epic had a terrific blend of action and great characters. Plus, the set design and cinematography is phenomenal.

Best line, possibly one of the best of all time: “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.”

SURFER

Tyrannosaur [2011] (Dir. Paddy Considine)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvyqXFmV-LI

TRANSFORMERS

Creed (2015) - What could've easily been a cheap attempt to cash-in on the Rocky name turned out to be the best film in the franchise since the 1976 original. Writer/director Ryan Coogler proved that his masterful debut Fruitvale Station wasn't a fluke by crafting an engrossing, poignant film that honors the legacy of Sylvester Stallone's original franchise while also forging its own unique path with a new set of well-developed and deeply likable characters that you want to see come out on top.

UNDEADMONKEY

Casino Royale (2006)

Chien (Master & Commander): I actually re-watched this last year. Pretty good movie, gives you some insight of the seafaring ways back in the days. And good performances all round. I forgot that Peter Weir did this...
Johnelre (Bridesmaids): I had enough of Melissa McCarthy right after this movie. I was very skeptical that i would like this, but ending up watching this in the basement of some cruddy cheap hostel in London with a complete german stranger. Truth is we both laughed our asses off. But i cant say ill watch it again. Kristen Wiig was excellent in this, Rose Bryne too.
Nico (Guardians of the Galaxy): Watched this one with my entire family in cinema in IMAX 3D. Was an absolute blast! Its almost weird for me to say im looking forward to the sequel, cuz of sequels you know?
Six (The Grand Budapest Hotel): Really enjoyed this, but for some reason only ever caught it once. Will probably chuck it on again soon.
Shyrke (Gladiator): Excellent movie, and that is a very good quote that still gives me goosepimples!
Surfer (Tyrannasaur): Haven't seen, but heard about it.
Tranny (Creed): After the great reviews and nostalgic factor, i was pretty pumped to watch this. tbh, i was left wanting more. Not enough Rocko and boxing montages, too much lovey duvy stuff. Still, it wasnt bad. 6/10 from me
UDM (Casino Royale): One of the best bond movies ever, caught it again last year on TV. The opening scene is so unlike bond and yet so cool that it really gave the new Bond a good platform to revamp. I remember somebody (was it you six or johnerle?) saying the card game was a bit over the top and too unbelievable but thats perfect bond. Raw Bondage. Good pick
W (Star Wars 3: Revenge of the Sith): My little brother loves this movie, but its probably the worst for me, just too stop-starty. I did like the general grievous fight, that was awesome. But looking back at it now, i feel like Hayden Christienson was totally miscast as a young (spoiler alert!) Darth Vader.

Chien: This is one film that's adored by most, but I don't get it. The action wasn't memorable, nor was the drama. I literally cannot remember anything about it.
John: A very easy film to watch. So much so I've probably seen it a few times on TV. Should have been this team writing Ghostbusters.
Nico: I've lots of problems with Marvel movies (and the same problems are there in all of them - all derivative, all have terrible villains and last acts), but this is one of the better ones.
Ron: I've seen 2 and 3, but not this one.
Shryke: I saw a bit of it on TV last night. The performances do not stand up, they're actually quite forced. But the action is well-directed.
Surf: Surprising choice. While I like social realism, this is actually more social grotesque and so it doesn't quite work, despite strong performances.
Creed: I saw it after the initial buzz, and wasn't impressed. It fails to transcend the cliches of boxing movies. The girl was totally under-used, the reveal about Creed's motivations is obvious. The only good thing is Michael B Jordan's stand-out performance.
UDM: I've never fully seen this, but probably in bits I can assemble the full film. One of the best Bond films.
W: As a hater of the prequels, this obviously didn't do it for me. Hammy acting, terrible script, and only a few good visual sequences. And you just can't end a film seriously with a character shouting "NNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO".

John, Bridesmaids : I was stunned to be disappointed by it when I saw it. There are some very funny moments, but overall I wasn’t really a fan of it.

Nico, Guardians : Probably my favourite Marvel film. It’s really fun, great alchemy between the characters, heck, even a little emotion. I don’t have a single Marvel film in my Top, but if I had, it would have been this one I think.

Six, Budapest : A marvel of a film. So many great things to say about it, I’ll say them later when it appears in my Top. But much later ;)

Ron, Cap America : First appearances of a character are usually good in Marvel films, it’s usually the sequels I’m no fan of. This first Cap film is good, I liked how it kept its WWII origin story, and Tucci is wonderful in a small role.

Shryke, Gladiator : I don’t think I’ve seen it since theater. I remember a solid Hollywood film, especially the beginning, but I never really kept a fond memory of it.

Surfer, Tyranosaur : Can’t say I remember much of it. It did nothing particular for me.

Tranny, Creed : A solid boxing film, but I don’t really get the hype over it.

UDM, Casino Royale : My favorite Craig-as-Bond film is Skyfall, but this is a good Bond film for sure. Great action, good female character (splendid Eva).

W, Revenge of the Sith : Probably the film from the new trilogy I prefer, despite some major flaws, essentially surrounding Christensen and Portman. But there are some great sequences. I love the Obi-Wan / Anakin final battle.

Chien, Master and Commander - Saw it once. Remember liking it, but not enough to watch it again. (It's the lesser of two weevils.)

JohnErle, Bridesmaids - Didn't care for it.

Nico, Guardians of the Galaxy - Love love love. Will be HIGH on my list.

Ron B, Captain America: The First Avenger - Another great Marvel film. Coming up later for me.

transfomers, Creed - Quite enjoyed it, and would watch it again.

UDM, Casino Royale - My favorite Bond/Craig movie. Balls-out Bond action.

W, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - I'm afraid I agree with almost everything Red Letter Media has had to say about the prequels. They're terrible.

CHIENFANTOME The Taste of Others (Le goût des autres) (2000) - never even heard of it

JOHNERLE Mr. Holmes (2015) – I really liked this film, not enough to make my list, but it handled the subject matter in a beautiful and unique way.

NICODEMUS I Am Legend (2007) hmmm, i saw it in theaters and not since. i thought it was very forgetful. wonder why you love it...

NUMBERSIX No (2012) - hmm, i think i remember hearing about it at the time of release, but i'm so done with politics, i wouldnt even touch it at the moment.

RON BURGUNDY Moonrise Kingdom (2007) - Havent seen it. can anyone explain what i'm missing from Wes Anderson films? i've seen grand budapest and fanatastic mr fox, both because of the rave reviews. Hated them both and so boring.

SHRYKESPEARE Collateral (2004) – has been on my to see list since it was released on DVD, never got around to it.

SURFER Sin City [2005] - have had the pleasure of sitting through this twice now, only times i can remember wishing to be doing something else besides watching a movie...

TRANSFORMERS Super 8 (2011) - yea i didn't get into it. The setup was intriguing enough, but around the halfway mark i just lost interest and the rest of the movie dragged.

W Wreck-it Ralph (2012) - I didn't care for it. of all the recent Disney animated films i have to sit through because of the kid, id pick tangled or even frozen over this.
