#1:

Remember the Titans (2000) Dir: Boaz Yakin, Starring: Denzel Washington, Will Patton, Wood Harris, Ryan Hurst

Trailer:

Depending on the day, week, month I could have chose Scott Pilgrim or Elf (especially around the holidays), but most of the time this movie is my favorite from the year 2000 (barely) on. As a historical sports movie, it's really in my wheelhouse. In my opinion, it's easily the best of the "historical sports" genre (yes, over Hoosiers). It's also a Civil Rights movie following the team through public school integration in the very early '70's, albeit Disney-fied.

It has an excellent cast headlined by one of Denzel's best roles where he plays a true coach, equal parts Drill Sargent, motivational speaker, and friend. He gives some of the best motivational speeches rivaling Bill Pullman in Independence Day, the best being the Gettysburg speech (see below). Besides Will Patton and a very early Ryan Gosling role, the rest of the cast are mostly known for television roles. Wood Harris (Avon Barksdale, "The Wire") and Ryan Hearst (Opie, "Sons of Anarchy") have a real chemistry as enemies turned friends.

Gettysburg Speech (starts about 1:30):
Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.

Excellent choice W. Remember the Titans is an exceptional movie that I feel doesn't always get the love it deserves.

UDM, your turn is tomorrow (Thursday). You are the last one up. After that, we are officially done!!

Loved your list, W. I've seen a whopping 47 of them, and we had THIRTEEN overlaps. Obviously, we love animated stuff and Marvel movies, but I think it's cool that we are the only two who felt Zootopia and The Martian worthy of inclusion. Loved that you had The Island, which I remember loving when it came out.

But... Episode III??? I (anagram of Sith) all over that choice.

Banks, you had a pretty decent list overall. At first I thought it was a mixed bag but forgot you only came in at #60.

As for the Social Network, I agree with you about Fincher's talent. He's very strong on visuals, editing. But for me he's only great at the technical side. Unless he has a great script I find he struggles, like with Benjamin Button, Dragon Tattoo, etc. And I have lots of problems with The Social Network's script. It even goes beyond Sorkin's usual issue of every character talking in the same way, even children (like in Steve Jobs) - I think it's the one-note tone, that nasty cynicism that pervades the whole story. Social networks have gone beyond being a sort of fad, just like all major technology (TV, video, walkman, etc) - it's now ingrained in our culture, and its complexity and connection with our broad identity has both good and bad things. To basically tie all this down to a guy who can't get over his ex (as the final scenes reveal) is reductive and a little shallow. It was no surprise that neither Fincher nor Sorkin actually use social networks in their life. They don't understand it, and that's evident in the film.

As for the rest of your list, it was great to see you include Exit Through the Gift Shop, and particularly Wolf of Wall Street - think we're the only 2 who picked that modern classic. We shared 13 films out of our lists, which is pretty impressive, especially considering there were 12 of your 60 I haven't seen. Going to add Kung Fu Panda and Wreck It Ralph to me Must Watch list!

I"m sure it's not hard to guess, My #1 is LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring.

My top ten was hard to order, as i could love some more than others at any time, but #1 was easy. Many fantasy films have tried but none have come close to achieving what Lord of the Rings did. Most struggle to barely be believable, but Lord of the Rings flies. It's almost as if we are watching history. It's anchored by it's wonderful, lovable characters, the amazing practical effects. I'm sure i don't need to say much, as most of you love it as well, so i will just leave you with a quote and what a quote to start off with...

The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was, is lost. For none now live, who remember it. It began with the forging of the Great Rings...

Well, UDM, you win the "Like Shryke, If I Could Be Like Shryke" Award.

I've seen 79 of your films, and we had 25 overlaps (including LOTR, which you split up). You love the worlds of HP, LOTR, and POTC, so you're okay in my book. We were the only two to pick Pitch Black (YESS!!!)

I commend your courage for picking more Shyamalan than anyone, not to mention your fetish for Sandra Bullock comedies and Asian period action films.

I seriously considered Jack Reacher, The Book of Eli, Skyfall, Cowboys vs. Aliens, Man on Fire and Julie and Julia for my list, and I'm glad they ended up on yours. Nice job, sir!

More catching up...

Tranny

A solid list, full of always-ready-to-watch comedies sprinkled with a dash of actioners and blockbusters. There's even a Woody Allen film in there, which honestly I didn't see coming  . We had 18 overlaps, including a handful that only us two selected: Grandma's Boy, Creed, Short Term 12! Can't believe I forgot The Spectacular Now. I've seen 85(!) of your films (86%), and I've even seen Pluto Nash! Out of all those, there's only one I do not like: Zoolander. Your #1, Sin City, was a great experience and it definitely opened up my mind of what film could be, at the time. However, personally, it collapses on rewatches, it doesn't seem to hold my interest and is mostly why I haven't bothered with the sequel. But it's a worthy inclusion.

Added to my Watch List, among others: Snatch, Remember The Titans

Surfer

It seems that we've found almost the perfect midpoint of our group, smack dab between the foreign appreciation of Six/Chien and the love for American new-classics. There's a lot to like here, and a lot that I haven't seen. We had 17 overlaps, which is surprising when I count them up. You know my love for The Social Network, and if I'd started at 100, you'd see films like Prisoners, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Thank You for Smoking make appearances. I've only seen 52 movies from your list, and there's a lot there I'm interested in. Pan's Labyrinth, for your #1, is a simply beautiful film, and you'll find no dissent here for that pick. del Toro is a magician with the right script.

Added to my Watch List, among others: Incendies, Memories For Murder (how many times has this appeared?), Kill List, Coraline

JohnErle

Our resident Canuck! There's a lot there that I like and even a bunch I've never heard of (which is becoming more rare, outside of Chien), like Stranger by the Lake or Enigma. Some big surprises too, from films I've never seen but have only heard bad things about: Lords of Salem and The Killer Inside Me, primarily. We only had 11 overlaps, and I think we're the only ones to list 12 Years A Slave - had I opted to add in the Potters, we'd be at 18, which is looking pretty average for me. I'll also stick up for Mean Girls 8 days out of the week. I've seen only 49 of your list (49%), which I attribute to a lot that I've always meant to get to, but they don't necessarily interest me enough to bang them out at any urgent pace. For your #1, I did enjoy The Royal Tenenbaums, but Wes Andersen just isn't my cup of twee- uh, I mean tea. It does edge out Fantastic Mr. Fox as my favorite of his however, and it even gave me reason to enjoy Gwyneth Paltrow!

Added to my Watch List, among others: The Ghost Writer, The Handmaiden, 99 Homes, Zodiac
Alexandra Daddario: Eyes of a Demon, Face of My Future Ex-Wife

Chien
Memories of Murder - Made my top 10. Strangely anticipating a rewatch to catch the 80s vibe I cant quite remember
Amelie - Real good, almost surprised its NOT your no.1
LOTR - My no.1, nuff said

Boosh
Requiem for a Dream - Nice pick. Doesn't seem to age, apart from them massive TVs ;)
The Master - Also on me list
Memento - 3 strikes! You're out? of this world? Im Ron Burgundy?

Shryke
Lucky Number Slevin - Over here its called 'The Wrong Man' smacks head. And wow, its pretty gosh darn high on ya list
How to Train Your Dragon - Im one of the odd ones out that doesn't like this movie much- despite liking the animated genre. Wait, what genre is this?
V for Vendetta - On my list too. I wonder where this would have placed overall? pretty sure 3+ people picked it

Banks
Juno - Not my cup of tea, but it aint bad
Kill Bill 1 - Noice pick banks
TDK - Great minds....
by the by - Nice post pick in top 100 for Thank You For Smoking :)

J-erle
The Grand Budapest Hotel - Not bad, but ranks in the lower half of Wes Anderson movies for me
Inside Llewyn Davis - I gave it something like a 7.5/10. But not completely sure if its closer to 7 or 8, needs to be seen once again
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship - Well, its kinda my FAVOURITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!! So yeah, nice pick.

Six
No Country for Old Men - in my top 10, good choice
The Royal Tenenbaums - As ive mentioned before, I used to dislike this and strongly. Thankfully it got better with each viewing. Seen it 3 times
Scott Pilgrims - So, how many people picked this overall? Must be at least 3 with 2 picks coming in very high. That said, I cant remember this nor thinking it was a masterpiece.

Surfer
28 Days Later - Seems everyone who picked this had it in their top 20 except for me. Cant really complain.
It Follows - Ahhhh, finally got to see this one last night. It was pretty fun to watch. Ill give it a 7/10, nice original music by disaterpiece as well.
Incendies - Arrrrghhh!! Finally got my hands on a 2nd copy of this today. Turns out it (like the first) DID NOT have English subtitles. BAH, maybe one day ill learn French

Tranny
Kill Bill 1 - I also prefer the first half, although I still dig both parts. My no 50
The 40 year old virgin - Its pretty funny, and got some heart too. Which is a nice combo in comedy
The Departed - Yes, good pick. Would be cool if none of us had of seen this and we all placed bets on who would survive. And I bet we'd all be wrong

UDM
Sky Captain - I cant remember much besides the Blue Screen from the making of this. Which as you know is now Green :)
Howls Moving castle - Also my fav from Miyazaki. Well done
Pirates....Black Pearl - This is the first one right? If so, almost made my list

W
Old School - Great pick buddy
Scott Pilgrim...- This one didn't strike a chord with me as it did others here. I cant remember much tbh.
Elf - On me list. Id say its a tight race between yourself and surfer to the most overlaps with myself.
