Future Movie-Club Nominations / General Suggestions

I'd like to keep Movie Club alive, so this thread is here to serve as a spot where we can talk about improvements to the system itself and also suggest future film selections. As you might've noticed, I did away with the "due dates." I don't want Movie Club to feel like homework. So, while I suggest doing your movie-watching in "order" (as the selections are still ordered numerically), go ahead and skip a movie if you honestly feel no inclination to see it--or if you simply can't get your hands on a copy. And, once you've watched a selection (and, ideally, its double-feature counterpart), please say something about it! It doesn't have to be Shakespeare (or Roger Ebert for that matter). It doesn't need to be a "review." Just a response.

Keep an eye on this spot, and I'll keep a tally of what movies have been seconded (thirded, fourthed, etc.):

Eyes Without a Face (3)
Cronos (2)
The Brave (2)
Anatomy of a Murder (2)
Secaucus Seven (2)
Pi (2)
The Last Temptation of Christ (2)
The Company Of Wolves (2)
Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer (2)
The King of Comedy (2)

edit: shuffled this stuff around a bit, sorry

Boosh started us off with some future movie suggestions:
Buscemi wrote:Eyes Without A Face (I don't remember if this one was done)
Anatomy Of A Murder
Two-Lane Blacktop (same here)
The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie
Big Wednesday
Over The Edge
Return Of The Secaucus Seven
Moonlighting (1982)
The King Of Comedy
One From The Heart
The Company Of Wolves
Lost In America
The Last Temptation Of Christ
sex, lies and videotape
Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer
La Femme Nikita
Until The End Of The World
Zentropa
The Living End
Kalifornia
Cronos
Freeway
The Brave (the lost Johnny Depp movie or Johnny Depp's only directorial effort)
Happy Together (1997)
Pi
SLC Punk
The Fast Runner
Thirteen
Curse Of The Golden Flower
Roman de Gare
Some great picks in there. I've really been meaning to see Cronos, The Brave, Anatomy of a Murder and Eyes Without a Face. I'd also be happy to rewatch Return of the Secaucus Seven, Pi, and the Last Temptation of Christ.

Consider those seconded. Everybody else: contribute your own suggestions and feel free to second (third, fourth, etc) any movie that has already been mentioned.

PS. I know we got the "The ReelSociety Film Critics Awards 2009" coming up soon. So, if you're like me, you're most likely scrambling to catch those last few '09 movies that you missed. I'm itchin' to dive into the new batch of Movie Club picks--but it's totally understandable if we put the '09 Awards as a higher priority. Personally, my Netflix queue's top 13 movies are all '09 flicks that I'm frantically trying to catch up on--so it'll be a bit before my Movie Club rentals start pouring in.

PPS. Triangle is a Movie Club selection AND eligible for the '09 awards. Hint, hint.

I would like to suggest:

1969 Political thriller Z, which is possibly the inspiration for the spate of 70's political thrillers in the US
3 Films by Hiroshi Teshigahara: Pitfall, Woman of the Dunes, and The Face of Another. They are supposed to be amazing dream-like horror stories.

Mostly because I just got Criterion editions of them all in the mail yesterday!

As far as Buscemi's list, I'd love to see:
Eyes Without A Face
The Company Of Wolves
Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer

And would love to rewatch the King of Comedy, because I think its influence is underestimated

I would love to see The Brave but to my knowledge it is not available in Australia. I tried to find it a while ago.

Thanks Buscemi. Good to know. I've never watched a movie on my computer before but I might have to give it a try.

I figured I'd bring this one up for a new recommendation. Year of the Dragon (1985), perhaps one of the most underrated films of the 1980's. Mickey Rourke gives probably his best performance as a bigoted New York cop assigned to bust a crime syndicate in the Chinatown district. John Lone also does a great job as the film's villain. Despite being from a guy best known for high-budgeted war movies, Michael Cimino's direction feels more like the best work of Sidney Lumet.

I haven't seen this one in a few years, but I remember being very impressed when discovering it. A really great atmosphere film.

I also remember Year of the Dragon, it was when i was trying to see anything Mickey Rourke had done, i was sucked in by Angel Heart, Spun and Rumble Fish. But dont remember liking it that much, a little slow, but still a good performance from MR.

I still havent seen Henry: Portrait of a serial killer, prob could do that as a suggestion OR The Long Goodbye OR Soldaat of Oranje OR The Big Chill OR Man Bites Dog
