Im going to post mine now as it seems that most of you get on this thread before i get home from work therefore you will probably be waiting an extra 24 hours for me. Once again all the thanks must go to Shryke for putting in his time and effort to make this countdown run as smoothly as he can. Fair dinkum.

#1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994) - Director: Frank Darabont - Stars: Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton and William Sadler

A truly remarkable film that is so uplifting and a brilliant film to enjoy. The whole cast puts in career best performances and Darabont does superbly with adapted Stephen King's book into this screenplay. I am a sucker for uplifting personal journey films and this tops the lot, a film that takes stock in the strength of friendship and hope culminating in one of the biggest twists in history and a very poetic climax. Top draw and for all its gripes, still remains one of the most respected films today.

Considering it's still the IMDB #1, it's no surprise to see at least one of us pick The Shawshank Redemption as our favourite film. Personally, I'm not blown away by the film. It's all a little obvious, a little heavy-handed. It's the kind of film you can watch for the first time and predict all the beats well in advance. That doesn't necessarily make it a bad film, it's just not something that stays with me. There are good elements, such as the solid cast (and the sexual abuse stuff is harrowing - remember, this came out before we saw Oz!) but it's simply not inspiring enough on any level for me to love it. A good film that doesn't feel great for me. That said, it's been about 10 years so I should give it a go again.

Ozzy, you had a mixed list for me. This is particularly obvious in your Top 10, which ranged from the brilliance of Toy Story, Die Hard, 28 Days Later, to The Matrix and Braveheart. Your overall average was 6.2, placing you in the bottom 4. We did have nine films on both of our lists, which isn't bad at all. The biggest surprise was seeing you pick The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, one of the most entertaining heist films of all time. But for every great pick there were a few I just really didn't like, including Gangs of New York, Snatch, Avatar, Watchmen, Lost in Translation, Enemy of the State, etc. Out of the 15 or so films I haven't seen, there's not a lot that interests me (sorry!), and I could see Patch Adams filling me with rage ;) But I'll stick with Liar Liar next time it's on TV, as well as Shane.

Well, obviously I knew this was coming, it's the movie you always seem to have on if I ever am out one day and return to see you cuddled up on the couch with all the curtains closed and the eerie music playing. I love it too, it made my top 20, and it is significantly an atmospheric horror/suspense movie which you just don't come across too often any more. Which is a shame.

Regarding your overall list, obviously there were many shared tastes, although your guilty pleasures do have a way of burning a hole in my brain when I picture them sitting alongside all the rest of our dvds! An American Werewolf In Paris, Sleeping With The Enemy, even Fried Green Tomatoes! Yikes!! I may 'lose' them over the coming days....

I like The Shawshank Redemption, I do, although I doubt I'd ever really class it as a favourite. It's an uplifting story, one my mother loves, and I guess in a sense that's how I feel about it. If my mother loves it, I cannot, no must not! It is well acted and a true feel good story, but I need a little more than that sometimes, and I just wish there was a little more to the movie than that.

Anyway regarding your whole list, it swung from good to bad so quickly, there were plenty of animated movies, also some good, some not so good, and it was a shame there were so few movies made prior 1990, maybe it's just an age thing and you haven't had the opportunity to see many older movies yet, but I can't seem to believe that some many movies released in the last couple of years are SO good that they make a top 100 list. I mean, beyond The Dark Knight, there's very little which I feel will stand the test of time. Anyway, maybe in 5 years or so you'll come to realise this [wink].

Mrs. Surfer's 1st post, finally ;) (I can't blame you, I've been late to join the newest forum myself^^).
It's been years since I last saw Psycho, but I still remember it chillingly. What an example of a film. What a craft of scaring the audience. What a fantastic character, a memorable music. Next time I see it play in a theater in Paris, I'll rush to see it again !

As for your whole list, greenarrow, it was obviously an interesting companion piece to Surfer, but not just. Sure you had some strange choices here and there (An American Werewolf in Paris, Chocolat, really ??), and you love that Burton fellow way too blindly, even some more crappy stuff of his, but your Top is still a remarkable. I'll always remember you're the one who made me want to see Black Narcissus just a few days before it was rereleased in Paris in a beautiful restored copy. The timing was perfect, and the film was a marvel to discover on the big screen. An amazing film I'll never thank you enough for pointing it at me.We share 11 films on our lists. I've seen 78 of your favourite films.
Oh, The Talented Mr Ripley appears twice in the recount of your Top 100, #50 and #60... you must have a bit of a mix up here ;)

What a great film to end your uneven Top (for me of course). Shawshank is a film that does not apear to be such an amazing film on the surface as it seems so natural and classical, but it brings out such a strong sentiment of cinema, and such powerful emotions, that it finds a spot among the greatest.

It is one of the 15 films we share on our Tops. And out of those 15, 4 feature in your Top 10, so I obviously love your Top 10 (despite Liar Liar and Braveheart). Overall though, you manage to list 13 films I don't like, and that's a lot, almost as much as our overlaps. The Top is way too much recent-US-films-oriented to really convince me, unfortunately. And I've seen 91 of your films, so it's not like there might be many secret treasures in it ;)

You said the forum times you out, right? I keep mine logged in all the time. I think if you check the box that says "keep me logged in" or whatnot, and then just manually sign out if you're on a shared computer (I'm not), then you won't have the problem anymore. At least, I never have the problem and that's what I do.

i know huh, you would think that i would remember, but to be honest, it's been one hell of a week, i'm getting over mild pneumonia, i'm sleep deprived, i guess that's what happens working on an indie film, i basically got molested by the border patrol coming back to texas, because i told them i came from california, so they automatically thought i had weed, i have never even smoked a cigarette in my life, i just want to forget this week ever happened.

sorry also about my number one post, i promise i will post it tomorrow morning, i'm too tired to write it up now. besides it's not like many of you are on here on the weekends. hope you all have a great weekend by the way
