Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

I'm often baffled by Tranny's hip-hop picks since that's a genre that's utterly foreign to me, and I'm fine with that, but I quite enjoyed that JPEGMAFIA track. The beat felt perfectly accessible to me, and I dug the horns. There seem to be a lot of horns in my picks this year, so that seems to be w...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Fever Ray leaned a little heavily on the pseudo-Chinese synth sounds, but I liked its sense of rhythm, so it worked for me. I'm not big on labels usually, but rarely has a song failed to live up to the genre expectations I had based on the description provided quite like that Cody Hanson song. There...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Six – It's hard to believe you and I almost had two crossovers on the same countdown, but I did think Los Angeles, Yo La Tengo, and Big Thief had a good chance of crossing over with you, Leestu, or Surfer. If I'd heard that Yard Act track earlier we might have had another crossover! Good god, I thi...

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's Countdown

I believe Roger Rabbit was an honourable mention for me, largely because it's been so long since I've seen it, but I do remember loving it, and I'm curious to see if the groundbreaking FX still hold up.

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

GHOSTWOMAN isn't doing anything that hasn't been done before, and that noisy breakdown lost me a bit, but the bulk of the tune was quite catchy. I might listen to it again. Kesha was surprisingly decent, despite having too much vocoder at the end. I might have to give it another shot. I heard some o...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Based on the band names and song titles alone I knew there was basically no chance of me liking most of this round's picks, but I gave them about a minute each in case they surprised me. They did not. Ron's pick was a decent palate cleanser at the end of the round, but it's another song where hearin...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

I didn't realize Yard Act had any new music out, but the first listen of the new single was quite promising. One of the reasons I fell in love with Sparks was their tendency to write about weirdly specific, esoteric topics, so a song about the history of the trench coat is right up my alley, and I'l...

Re: Best of 2023 So Far

And I thought my measly 4 followers on Letterboxd was embarrassing. If it'll make you feel any better, I can bump you up to two.

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's Countdown

I just now noticed that you were doing this, Chien. I'm super busy these days, but I'll try to follow along, and if you've already seen my list you know No Way Out was one of my honourable mentions. It was one of the roles that made Costner a star, and that sex scene in the back of the limo was more...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

I liked the vaguely tropical rhythms of Young Fathers. That was easily my favourite song so far, but there was nothing else the past few rounds that I'm likely to listen to again.

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

I've gotten caught up with everyone's picks, not counting the honourable mentions, and while nothing blew me away, Deeper, Sampha, Grian Chatten, and Genesis Owusa were all interesting enough to be worth another listen.

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Time for my honourable mentions before we jump into the official countdown. I'm more used to doing a top 30, which seems like a nice, round number, so I've got a few more bonus tracks than Six. Sparks - Veronica Lake You're all pretty well versed in the Sparks sound by now, which is quite a change f...
