Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

#10 and 9 John: The New Pornographers song was okay, but I've forgotten about it already. The Botticelli Baby song was surprisingly satisfying. Good swing to it, but felt modern. I can't wait until AI just replaces bands and creates the music we want as individuals. Then we don't have to engage with...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

SONG #9 John Botticelli Baby : Lips The Spotify DJ feature is getting awfully good at throwing songs I end up liking into the mix. I was listening to lots of classic jazz and swing in 2023, mostly soundtracks like Blood & Black Lace or Satan In High Heels, plus a few gangster-themed jazz compilatio...

SONG #10 John The New Pornographers: Really Really Light Neko Case and her Canadian Boyfriends return with another podium-worthy piece of indie pop. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oWiY61IbPE Leetsu Cory Hanson: Persuasion Architecture This is my favourite song from easily his best album so far (and...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

#11 John: Worked quite well, actually. Nice energy to it. Leetsu: Didn't work for me at all, had a very over-produced heavy rock sound that almost reminded me of nu-metal. I'm not a huge Placebo fan but in this case I prefer the original. tranny: Dua Lipa is capable of some really fun, catchy tracks...

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's Countdown

I love that every good French movie has a mediocre American remake that erases the memory of the original

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Six – It's hard to believe you and I almost had two crossovers on the same countdown, but I did think Los Angeles, Yo La Tengo, and Big Thief had a good chance of crossing over with you, Leestu, or Surfer. If I'd heard that Yard Act track earlier we might have had another crossover! Good god, I thi...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

On #13 and #12 John: Emily Rose has really pulled herself together after than whole exorcism ordeal. The song was pretty much as stereotypically country as you can get, but it wasn't unpleasant. Agreed on Lol Tolhurst (plus Budgie plus some other guy) and naming conventions. This song is the highlig...

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's Countdown

I'm surprised no one else picked Roger Rabbit. It's a great, and one of the many examples of 80s kid oriented films that had really fucked up moments (the Goonies and the dead body, and that scene in The Neverending Story)

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

SONG #12 John Lol Tolhurst & Friends: Los Angeles I hate this trend, borrowed from hip-hop, of listing an endless array of artists in the credits on the same track. Who has time to type all those names? If that many established people want to work together, they should give themselves a supergroup ...

Re: 2023 Festivals/Awards Thread

Anatomy of a Fall definitely has a good shot at a Best Picture nomination Is anyone doing Sundance At Home this year? Any suggestions on screenings to pick? Sucks that the biggest premieres are not online this year. Not sure which ones are at home and which ones aren't, but I really like Kneecap an...
