Re: Screening The Releases - February 9th

What a disasterous week. Less than $30m for the top 10.

The studios could have picked up some indie films and pushed them harder, instead of another failed attempt to make a Diablo Cody script a hit.

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's Countdown

Interesting. I have the Criterion WKW boxset and this is the only one I haven't watched. So it's as good as his subsequent films?

Re: Rate That Movie Part IV: Movies Never Sleep

You can be stupid. You just can't be excessive, which is where a lot of the criticism is coming from. A film like this doesn't need to cost $200 million to produce. It didn't cost 200m to produce, it was acquired for that amount. Vaughn's company privately funded it for way less (less than $100m I'...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Six's #1 Protomartyr: Rain Garden http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dElz-Jt6K1Y If Protomartyr have a record out, you can pretty much count on them featuring high up on my songs of the year list. I've been a fan for a decade, and they're the perfect mix of post-punk, indie, rock, with an ambitious sin...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Catching up on the #1s Surf, glad to see another song in common. It's also great to have you back participating, with such eloquent descriptions of your songs. You said it better than I could, and I agree it's the best track in an excellent album. I'd never heard of Wednesday until last year, so I m...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Ron, your #1 sounded like if The Strokes grew up on a tropical island. Not exactly for me, but like a lot of songs on your list, they were often too pleasant to dislike. Your list was as confounding as always, with the more poppy stuff lulling me into a false sense of security, and then occasionally...

Re: Hot Streak

I was reading up on Eddie Murphy the other day, and his streak in the 80s may not have been perfect critically, but commercially it was stunning. 48 Hrs. (1982) Trading Places (1983) Beverly Hills Cop (1984) The Golden Child (1986) Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) Eddie Murphy: Raw (1987) Coming to Ameri...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Tranny, what can I say about your #1? Well, put it this way: I like curry, I like pizza, I like ice-cream, I like ramen. But if you put them all together in a single dish it's going to taste pretty awful. As for the rest of your list, to be fair most of the screamy experimental metal didn't bother m...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Leetsu, your #1 wasn't my favourite song from your list, not by a long shot. It was fun, trippy psych rock that was a little too nostalgic for me. But your list in total was great. A few crossovers either in song or band (Yard Act, Shame), a few I knew already and love (Deeper, Mhaol), and a few sur...

Re: Rate That Movie Part IV: Movies Never Sleep

That too!

But Zone is an unconventional film, an experience as opposed to a story, quite like the kind of films you see in art galleries. So I get why it's not for everyone

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

John, while I generally am happy to hear a Sparks, I wasn't hugely blown away by your #1. I much preferred the drilling synth of the title track. Still, at least it wasn't another Margo track. I did enjoy your list in total, though, and it actually felt like one of your best. Maybe that's because yo...
