Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's: #30-2
Return Of The Jedi - Even as a child, I thought it was too childish. Friggin' Ewoks! Angel Heart - Love it. If Six thinks this is silly, he should read the trashy novel it was based on. The movie is high art by comparison. And I'm sure this wasn't Alan Parker's intention, but ever since I first watc...

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's: #30-2
I went into the remake of Fright Night with low expectations, but I found it surprisingly well-made, and different enough from the original to stand on its own. I vastly prefer the original, of course, but the remake is at least worth seeing.

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's: #30-2
Grave Of The Fireflies - Never saw it. See previous comments re: Studio Ghibli/anime. Midnight Run - Love it, but it's an honourable mention. And welcome aboard. Predator - Here's one more I can scratch off my honourable mention list. It's getting shorter by the round. Temple Of Doom - It was always...

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's: #30-2
Killers - Haven't seen it, and nothing John Woo's ever done would make me want to. My Left Foot - Haven't seen it since it was new-ish, so can't really comment one way or the other. FMJ - Love it. They Live - A true cult classic whose impact is diminished somewhat by the over-abundance of Obey t-shi...

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's: #30-2
All good picks yesterday, some of which will appear on my list, and the rest are well worth watching, even if they fell short. I suspect we're at the point where many movies will start appearing multiple times, so instead of repeating myself I'll just say I'm glad so many of my honourable mentions h...

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's: #30-2
RoboCop – There's a lot to like about it, but the over-the-top violence and machismo feels like a precursor to Michael Bay, and Peter Weller is too wooden to even play a convincing android. Nausicaa - Never saw it. I've seen very few Studio Ghibli, or anime for that matter. Road Warrior – As far as ...

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's: #30-2
Glory – I saw it when it was new to cable, and I know I liked it, but I never had any desire to revisit it. Like Six, I suspect it would seem like pure Oscar bait today. Withnail & I – It has a devoted cult following which I would never dare argue with, and the movie does have its charms, but even w...

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's: #30-2
Labyrinth – Good, not great, and David Bowie with his enormous package chasing after a teenage Jennifer Connelly is more than a little creepy, and not in a good way. Vagabond – I haven't gotten around to any Varda yet, and that clip doesn't really move her to the top of my must watch list. Licence T...

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's: #30-2
Apart from Ran, which is great, there's not much to say about this round. The other were very popular and/or critically acclaimed in the 80s, but I haven't seen any of them since then, and I've probably never seen Crimes & Misdemeanours. I never really cared for Woody or Mel, and I'm sure they proba...

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's: #30-2
Manhunter – I've never forgiven Michael Mann for Miami Vice, and this was only marginally better. Red Dragon was vastly superior in every way. Thin Red Line – I might have seen it in the 80s, but definitely not since then, so I can't remember a thing about it. I'm not a big documentary guy, so I nev...

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's: #30-2
As for Back to the Future 2, I think it's almost as good as the first. It's the Ghost of Christmas Future combined with a dystopian sci-fi that ended up predicting Trump, and even goes back to the original and finds ways to make it just as fun and tricky. That all may be true, but the way I remembe...

Re: ShrykeVerse Top Movies of the 80's: #30-2
Terminator - A classic, but it missed my list. Back To The Future - Another classic that missed my list, perhaps because it seemed like too obvious a choice. And the way I remember it, I hated part II and was pleasantly surprised by Part III, but neither really needed to be made. Rocky IV - Damn Ruu...
