Re: Best of 2023 So Far

I remember how, 10 years ago or so, I was bemoaning the fact that imdb didn't have more social features to connect users. Then Letterboxd came along to fill that very void, and when I finally tried it: meh. It's got a few features that imdb should have had years ago, and it's got a nice layout and d...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Teenage Dads was catchy, summery pop, but I doubt it'll stick with me. I was mostly struck by how misty and blustery the weather was at the start of the video because it looked nothing like how I picture Australia, and the whole thing reminded me of the video for In A Big Country with the band runni...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

In a shocking turn of events, it turns out I did not enjoy Tranny's #1!! I know, who'da thunk it? I didn't really dig Leestu's either, which was more surprising. His lists tend to be my favourites during these countdowns, but not so much this year. Oh well, maybe next time. I already found a couple ...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Before I reveal my #1, I want to give a shout out to my favourite legacy discovery of 2023. I'm listening to more Latin music and classic jazz than ever before, and I've always placed a strong emphasis on percussion, which is undoubtedly why this popped up in my Spotify queue one day. Sabu Martinez ...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Cody Hanson – When Big Country released The Crossing in 1983, the title track got relegated to b-side status despite being as good as anything on the album, so I get you. This had a nice guitar sound and lots of energy but weak vocals. JPEGMAFIA – Too out there and over-stuffed for me. And Marmaduke...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Welcome aboard, Chien. I liked the bells and simple beat of Hoshi, but not the rapping or French Billie Eilish fashion choices. Adderal was decent, but nothing mind-blowing. Veil Of Maya Angelou – The intro sounded downright clubby, so I thought I'd accidentally clicked on one of Ron's picks, but th...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

PJ Harvey – It started off well until the shrill vocals kicked in. And why is she singing about the “chunky children of Evermore?” Fat shaming is not cool, PJ Harvey. Little Simz – The use of horns and jazzy stand-up bass was interesting, but the vocals were a hard no. Heartwormz – After a promising...

John: A simple acoustic folk track with some pretty vocals, but a bit too mellow for my tastes.
You're going to hate tomorrow's pick.

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Nice to see Los Angeles appear again. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've ever had two crossovers on the same countdown, but I've also liked fewer of your guys' picks than ever before, so I'm not sure what to make of that.

Case in point: I didn't like anything else that was posted today.

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Today's picks were a nope, a nun-uh, a no thanks, a next please, and a not in this lifetime, but not necessarily in that order.

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

I'm often baffled by Tranny's hip-hop picks since that's a genre that's utterly foreign to me, and I'm fine with that, but I quite enjoyed that JPEGMAFIA track. The beat felt perfectly accessible to me, and I dug the horns. There seem to be a lot of horns in my picks this year, so that seems to be w...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Fever Ray leaned a little heavily on the pseudo-Chinese synth sounds, but I liked its sense of rhythm, so it worked for me. I'm not big on labels usually, but rarely has a song failed to live up to the genre expectations I had based on the description provided quite like that Cody Hanson song. There...

Re: Top 25 Songs of 2023

Six – It's hard to believe you and I almost had two crossovers on the same countdown, but I did think Los Angeles, Yo La Tengo, and Big Thief had a good chance of crossing over with you, Leestu, or Surfer. If I'd heard that Yard Act track earlier we might have had another crossover! Good god, I thi...
