Re: The DVD/Blu-Ray (Plus For Sale) Thread

My initial excitement over finding that Canadian distributor for Criterion discs has definitely worn off because three weeks after placing my initial order it hasn't even shipped yet. They're claiming they received a ton of orders at the start of the Criterion sale, which corresponded with an Arrow ...

Re: Coronavirus Megathread

Some of the theatres in Vancouver have been open for a while, and I'll be having my first post-COVID visit to a theatre this weekend. There's a Film Noir retrospective every August so I'll be checking out a few over the coming weeks, starting with Pickup On South Street and The Lady From Shanghai. M...

Re: What Are You Watching Right Now? Episode 3 - Turtles in Time

Well, at least you're consistent in saying you'd shun a plumber the same as you'd shun Polanski. I don't agree with that attitude, but I understand it. If a criminal is treated like a criminal his entire life, then there's no hope for rehabilitation and they might as well re-offend, stay in prison, ...

Re: What Are You Watching Right Now? Episode 3 - Turtles in Time

I don't plan to spend the next week arguing about this, since neither of us will ever change our minds, but I feel I need to offer a few thoughts on why I still support Polanski as an artist. Sorry for the length but I have no Wi-Fi at home, which means I can't post here on weekends, so I had a long...

Re: What Are You Watching Right Now? Episode 3 - Turtles in Time

His last two movies weren't even released in North America, so you can't tell me those weren't suppressed. And Byran Singer making X-Men movies isn't the same as an auteur like Polanski. It's super easy to watch an X-Men movie without ever thinking about who directed it. That's good news about The T...

Re: What Are You Watching Right Now? Episode 3 - Turtles in Time

So it turns out that Unobstructed View is also the official distributor for Arrow Video in Canada, and they're having a 50% off sale for most Arrow titles as well, so I went a little nuts on my first order. I picked up all of the following for just over $300: Criterion: Ugetsu Seven Samurai Repulsio...

Re: What Are You Watching Right Now? Episode 3 - Turtles in Time

I visited the Criterion website for the first time in years an they're now recommending a site called Unobstructed View for Canadian orders. They're having their own 40% off sale right now, and they offer free shipping in Canada for orders over $100, which is easy to reach with Criterions, so I thin...

Re: What Are You Watching Right Now? Episode 3 - Turtles in Time

I have to pay 5% GST and 7% PST, so it adds up quickly. Us poor folk get a big chunk of that back when we pay our yearly income tax, but it's still enough to make me think twice about luxury items like Criterion discs.

Re: What Are You Watching Right Now? Episode 3 - Turtles in Time

Hmm. Taxes are so much lower in the States it might actually be worth it. Something like The Seven Samurai would probably be too heavy, but the generic Criterion titles should fall under that weight limit. It all depends on the packaging and weight of the booklet. I'll think about it for a couple of...

Re: What Are You Watching Right Now? Episode 3 - Turtles in Time

If you want anything from the Criterion Sale and aren't in the US, I'll order it, repackage it and ship it to you. Just pay the exact cost it'll cost me. Pretty much everything is out of stock right now, but they should be good next week. Thanks. I remember you did that at least once before, maybe ...

Re: What Are You Watching Right Now? Episode 3 - Turtles in Time

I've had Ugestu on my Amazon wishlist for years now, but I've never seen the Criterion Blu-Ray drop under $40. And I've had Breathless sitting on my shelf for ages but never got around to plugging it in. Hitch-Hiker is a surprisingly gritty film that holds up pretty well, but the version I saw was o...

The next big one should definitely be movies, but I think I'd prefer an all-time directors countdown.

Re: Top 100 Songs of the Millennium (2000-2019) - THE #1s

Shryke – Your “end this puppy” line made me think of that classic National Lampoon magazine cover, and what's all this about glory holes? (adjusts glasses) Oh, never mind. You saved the nearly best for last because your #1 pick was quite good. Wikipedia tells me it was a big hit, but I could swear I...

Re: Top 100 Songs of the Millennium (2000-2019) - THE #1s

While I'm glad to hear about your newfound respect for Steve Earle, I feel the need to point out that he doesn't merely flirt with different genres. He flirts with them, takes them out to dinner, makes them call him Daddy, then leaves them for the next genre that catches his eye. ;-) Let me know whe...
