Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (10-2)

Round 7 was solid, round 6 was a disaster, but round 5 was the best yet, apart from a few rough patches. There's a pattern developing that's the opposite of the (false) theory of early Star Trek movies which states that only the even numbered ones are worth watching. Dua Lipa – I can understand want...

Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (10-2)

Re-Rewind – The #2 song on the UK charts on my 11th birthday was Words by F.R. David, whoever that is. #1 was True by Spandau Ballet so I'd be happy with that. Other classics in the top 30 were Let's Dance - David Bowie, Love Is A Stranger – Eurythmics, Flight Of Icarus – Iron Maiden, Blue Monday – ...

Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (10-2)

JohnErle - Sparks Plugs - This was actually damn cool. (And BTW, there are other songs that mention Winnipeg. https://www.lyrics.com/lyrics/Winnipeg TWO of them are by Neil Young. Interestingly, this list doesn't include Sparks...) I don't know that Neil Young song, but I should have known Stompin'...

Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (10-2)

This was probably the best round yet, with nothing I outright hated, and quite a few songs I really liked. Keep it up! Selena Gomez – The beat is undeniably catchy, so whoever she bought it from earned their paycheque, but I still can't get past the poor little rich girl lyrics. Matt Beringer – That...

Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (10-2)

Vintage Crop – I'm confused. Wouldn't North Australia be warmer than South Australia, or is this a song about being on tour somewhere cold? I'm also confused because your pick was my clear favourite this round. ;) ADDED Righteous – The first time I heard it I thought some of the lyrics were cringe-w...

Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (20-11)

If it's a full album experience you're looking for, I'd recommend I Feel Alright as starting point. Much of it harkens back to early rock & roll or rockabilly like Elvis, Gene Vincent, or Johnny Cash, and there's plenty of classic blues and a bit of Velvet Underground in there as well . So You Wann...

Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (10-2)

Sparks - Nearly 50 years? According to Wiki, they've been together since 1967 (54 years). That's amazing. This song is cool. Well, they're brothers, so technically they've been together much longer than that, but their first album came out in late 1971, so that's where I start counting. The 50th an...

Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (10-2)

Special Interest – Like many of your best picks, it didn't quite grab me at first, but it's interesting enough to warrant further investigation. ADDED Dear Theo Huxtable – The best thing about this is knowing that people will be less likely to call Sparks “too theatrical” after this. It was pleasant...

Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (20-11)

...been enjoying these Steve Earle songs...who would have thought? I think you've said something similar every time I've included him in a countdown. When are you going to stop being surprised? ;) When I really like a whole album. I think it's because through you I'm only hearing the better songs, ...

Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (10-2)

As for Harry Styles, no self-respecting band should ever cover him, unless they're covering him with dirt in a shallow grave. If Mr. Olivia Wilde ever ends up swimming with the fishes, I'll be sure to direct the authorities to the greater Vancouver area ;) No jury would ever convict me, unless it w...

Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (10-2)

Nothing for me in round 10. They were all perfectly valid representations of their respective genres but they didn't resonate with me.

Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (20-11)

The site's making it a pain for me to sign in again because of some Spamhaus B.S., so I'll just say nothing excited me from rounds 12 or 11. The Sufjan track was ok but fell flat. I blame the production.

Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (20-11)

#13 Hip-Hobbits – I didn't realize rap had made it to the Shire. Smith St. Band – Flat, boring production. Get a new producer for the next album and they might have something. Franchise (feat. all the rappers) – The beat was nice, but repeated ad nauseum, and I tuned out most of the rapping Tinashe ...

Re: Top 50 Songs of 2020 (20-11)

There's no reason to break with tradition now. We may as well have everyone post their #1s as in the past. Round 14: That Fapple tune is interesting enough to warrant further investigation, and it started to grow on me the second time around. ADDED King Sabbath And The Flabby Tablets had its moments...
