Re: Tranny Tackles the Cinema: The Films of 5/24

I think the difference was the Internet. However, the Internet popularity of Garfield is almost entirely ironic.

Re: Tranny Tackles the Cinema: The Films of 5/24

Garfield's getting destroyed by critics, noting how little it has to do with the comic strip. At this point, it's probably going to play less Secret Life of Pets and more Migration. Meanwhile, I have to wonder if Sony's going to regret making a deal with Garfield's animation studio to release future...

Re: 2024 Festivals/Awards Thread

I can't see the awards voting bases being too wowed by a movie about strippers and oligarchs, especially from a director who usually makes arthouse exploitation. But Neon probably won't release it in the summer either due to their massive backlog of undated titles. They still haven't given Soderberg...

Re: 2024 Festivals/Awards Thread

Wasn't that always a title that was going to sell internationally before domestic? As a US distributor, I'm still expecting Netflix to win out is Amazon doesn't take it as a limited release/Prime title (much like Howard's Thirteen Lives was). Hit Man got great reviews at Toronto but AGC was only abl...

Re: The Latest Date Changes 2: The New Batch

It looks like Janus Films might be further beefing up its distribution of newer titles. Steven Rales, the head of Indian Paintbrush and frequent producer of Wes Anderson's films, has bought both Janus and The Criterion Collection and has pledged to continue both labels' mission statements.

Re: The Latest Date Changes 2: The New Batch

I was sure an independent would buy this one with Max retaining the streaming rights. In Zaslav's Warner Bros., it might be the least-characteristic movie on their slate of filmbro, toxic masculine, and nostalgia-aimed product.

Re: 2024 Festivals/Awards Thread

But don't they usually like films from French directors?

Anyway, Horizon seems to be a misfire based on the first reviews. Costner probably should have made this one three-hour movie instead of two.

That Blue Angels number is even more impressive when you realize it only played matinees.

Re: The Obituary Thread

Dabney Coleman, who seemingly appeared in every notable early 80's movie as well a number of TV shows, passed away yesterday at 92.

Re: SIX TIPS, OR HOW TO PLEASE YOUR SLATE – THE FILMS OF 5/17

During her lifetime, Americans only knew Amy for two things: being the singer of Rehab and her constant legal issues. You never heard her songs on the radio and she was always overshadowed by the latest American acts (remember, this is when Katy Perry was essentially guaranteed a #1 song every time ...

Re: Rate That Movie Part IV: Movies Never Sleep

Hit Man 3/10 Glen Powell stars in, co-writes, and produces a movie that tells us how great Glen Powell is. Everyone's new rich Texan "it" darling plays a guy named Gary (surprisingly not followed with Stu) who when he's not a dead ringer for Jeffrey Dahmer and being a popular scholar, plays a fake h...

Re: The Latest Date Changes 2: The New Batch

The reported production budget is $300 million. How does a movie about Formula 1 cost this much to produce? Gran Turismo was a $60 million production and that was from a major studio rather than a middling streaming service.

You could have easily made this one for $100 million.

Re: The Latest Date Changes 2: The New Batch

I don't expect Sony to go after Kosinski's newest, as it basically reads like Gran Turismo without the video game elements.
