Re: 2023 Festivals/Awards Thread

Origin seems to be dead in the water. Despite some decent early word, it seems like the general response is that the source material was better. Meanwhile, Wonka, which would seem like a contender in a few categories (costume design, art direction, visual effects), is running into the same issues as...

Re: Screening The Releases - December 1st

Eileen expands wide, or at least semi-wide, on Friday, so this will likely be the only week it gets PTA points.

Re: The Trailers Shown Before Other Movies Thread

If you think those decisions are weird, look at how they were supposed to release The Unbreakable Boy almost two years ago, pulled it from the schedule a week before the release date, and have never rescheduled it. And this is the kind of movie Lionsgate loves to push.

Re: The Trailers Shown Before Other Movies Thread

1992 is about the Los Angeles riots. Lionsgate is opening it next month.

And I got that Poor Things trailer with my showing of Dream Scenario. It's a breath of fresh air compared to the teaser that played before every single movie for a while.

Re: The Trailers Shown Before Other Movies Thread

Interestingly, I didn't get any studio trailers before Silent Night. Only the older trailer for Night Swim and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes were shown.

Meanwhile, my showing of Godzilla Minus One had the redband trailer for The Beekeeper. Godzilla Minus One is PG-13.

Re: Nico's Review of "Godzilla Minus One"

Yeah, I can agree somewhat with that. I wouldn't call it 10/10 but a solid 9/10.

Re: Nico's Review of "Godzilla Minus One"

I didn't care for either one but I'd rather sit through Barbie again. I found at least one thing to like about that one and it was an hour shorter.

Re: Nico's Review of "Godzilla Minus One"

If Nolan hadn't made Oppenheimer, no one would have cared. But it would have been a lot better, as it would have been much more focused, a lot better edited, and something for adults, rather than people who only came because it had explosions. Also, Oppenheimer wouldn't have looked like a Proud Boy ...

Re: Nico's Review of "Godzilla Minus One"

Best: https://letterboxd.com/buscemi1/list/best-of-2023/ Worst: my only 1/10 this year is Skinamarink. There have been plenty of 2/10's for me, including some critics loved, but Skinamarink for me didn't even feel like a movie. It felt like a cruel joke. Most overrated: Oppenheimer. Biggest disappoi...

Re: Nico's Review of "Godzilla Minus One"

It's funny how we posted reviews for the same movie less than 40 minutes apart. It's also interesting how you panned this one but still gave it a passing grade, much like in your review for The Creator.

Anyway, what are your favorite and least favorite movies this year?

Re: The Trailers Shown Before Other Movies Thread

Well, I finally saw the Argylle trailer. I didn't know someone was interested in combining The Lost City with Ghosted.

Re: Rate That Movie Part IV: Movies Never Sleep

Godzilla Minus One 7/10 While I'd put this one in the middle for the long-running Godzilla franchise, I'd put it way ahead of Shin Godzilla. Returning again to the "Godzilla is the villain" basics in this prequel, this one, like the original, uses the basis of post-war Japan as its backdrop and whil...

Re: 2023 Festivals/Awards Thread

I'm still betting on Barbie to win, as the old people movie never wins Best Picture and Nolanbros aren't AMPAS members. Also, there are way too many downbeat movies in the running, which could lead to a more upbeat movie emerging victorious. Remember, no one had CODA winning the Oscar for Best Pictu...
